Sarah McCreath woke up to a mother’s worst nightmare.

In the middle of the night, she heard a loud “pop.” Her 11-year-old son, Kian McCreath, fled from his room, screaming, “My bed is on fire.” He was engulfed in flames, the Telegraph reports.

McCreath, who lives in Coventry, England, had left a new BlackBerry Curve 9320 near Kian’s bed. The family claims that the phone exploded and caused Kian’s mattress and duvet to catch fire. McCreath ran into her son’s room and beat the fire out with a quilt. But it was too late — the flames left her son with severe burns on his legs and feet, and melting plastic had stuck to his skin. He now has trouble sleeping and will probably carry these scars for the rest of his life.

“You wouldn’t think something so small could do so much damage,” McCreath told the Telegraph. “My son could quite easily have died.”

"At this point in time, the family has not provided RIM with the battery or charger for analysis and have said they are unable to locate the device itself. We have a team on standby to conduct this investigation as a priority as soon as the family makes these products available to us."
