remote ubuntu
« on: September 02, 2012, 08:46 PM »
hello!

at lab, there is an ubuntu pc that many people use
I am logged in and when I physically leave, I just lock the screen (that means I am still logged in, right?)

the question is, can I have access to that pc from my home pc?
preferably without anyone can see it

thanks!

I don't know what sorts of programs you use, but if they are command line oriented, tools such as tmux or screen might be put to good use.

Ubuntu supports a Remote Desktop feature that works much like remote desktop on a Windows PC. Here's an extremely quick how-to to get you started. Google for your specific Ubuntu version.

You could also use TeamViewer which has a Linux client. That would allow you easily configurable access from any type pf PC (Win/OSX/Nix). It's free for personal use.

Neither does Netstat...  :tellme:

Seriously, it sounds like your admin dept isn't too friendly, otherwise, I'd recommend TigerVNC over VPN for highest performance and best security, though VNC over SSH with port-forwarding would work well too, but probably not as palatable to admin types.

For ease of use, I +1 40Hz's recommendation for Teamviewer.  Dead simple to set up; no idea how secure it is.
