Recommend host for slide shows?
« on: October 10, 2011, 03:24 PM »
mouser makes screencasts to show features of some of his programs.  For the rest of us, there's Jing, but Jing seems to work on either single screenshots or five-minute movies, and you can't annotate the movies.

I'd like the equivalent of Wink, i.e., a series of screenshots that can be annotated individually, and assembled into a slide show that the viewer can step through at their own pace, including stepping backwards.  Can anyone recommend a good host for such slide shows?  I don't have Flickr or YouTube accounts, and maybe somewhere else is better.  Ideally I'd like at some space free, as it's not something I'm likely to do very often.

How about one of the screensaver programs as an inexpensive option? If mouser's doesn't do the trick I think gPhotoShow would.

Sorry, folks, I wasn't clear.  It's not the making of the slide shows that I'm concerned about at present - it's a suitable hosting site to upload them to, so anyone with a link can see them, like Jing does.

So you want a free web host...somewhere to store the images and link people to them?

if its for instructional stuff to the public, dc can provide space if you can't find another place.

Yes, I suppose I do want a free Web host, and I was thinking of instructional material for the public, as it were.  This was started by posts about using Listary with XYplorer on the recent lifetime license offer on XYplorer on Bits du Jour, where I wanted to make some screenshots (I misunderstood matters, but that's irrelevant here).  Jing is a TechSmith program and can send its output to their screencast.com Web site, where you get 2 GB of free space.  It can do either plain screenshots with simple annotations, or 5-minute videos that can't be annotated.  I was looking for a home for the half-way situation of step-by-step "how to" slideshows like Wink does.

mouser - thanks for the offer: it's just that the public might not be solely or even primarily DC.  In that case, I wouldn't feel all that comfortable.

How about a youtube channel? Just make the slideshows into video format, and upload :)

Have you read this thread Seriously, Youtube is becoming impossible!?   It's not the only DC thread finding fault with YouTube.

just because its not perfect, doesnt mean its not a handy service for something like your wanting.  Other than that you could ask mousey for hosting, or go somewhere like freehostia.co, or wix.com :)

I'd rather avoid anyone having to dodge spam buttons and the like, if I'm tying to describe something technical.

Thanks!  That's the kind of thing I meant.  At first sight, slideshare looks most interesting.

Some other options:
http://www.screencast.com/ (part of TechSmith's domain)
http://screencast-o-matic.com/

For making and presenting amazing online presentations (watch the examples):
http://prezi.com/

Hm...

That's where I came in.  Jing sends single screenshots or videos to screencast.com, but I didn't think there was a way to upload slideshows made by third-party programs, and that maybe they wouldn't be very happy if one did.

I think you're elected resident expert on screencasting  8)  Thanks!
