I want a game for Christmas: turn-based
« on: December 19, 2010, 12:52 PM »
So anyway, change of plan. I'm going to be in the UK for Christmas, and by the looks of it, probably snowed-in with the in-laws.  :o

I'll have a reasonable spec'd laptop to hand, and I think I'd like to take a nice game with me to wile away a few hours, something to get my teeth into after the Christmas day sprout mountain.

I'm looking for something turn-based since I have the reflexes of a sloth, and ideally in the fantasy/sci-fi genre. Strategy or RPG is good.

Hit me up with some nice suggestions please folks!

Try Magic the Gathering Online. Addictive. Also can be costly if you want it to be. :)

Nice suggestion - I did enjoy MtG a great deal back in the day. If it can also be played offline, that would be a good start.

Keep 'em coming!

TBS fantasy, eh:
I've heard Age of Wonders is pretty good: http://www.gog.com/e...wonders_shadow_magic
If your lappy can handle it, Civ IV is cheap, great, and has Fall From Heaven, a very deep fantasy mod.

Sins of a Solar Empire

Excellent strategy game in my book. Not too expensive, even with the expansion kit...and no DRM!

I had the old MTG years ago that was entirely offline.

I *think* this is offline:

http://store.steampowered.com/app/49400

But, it uses Steam... I tried to use Steam once and it was just hosed. Probably it pissed me off because it wouldn't let me set my location and I *HATE* being rammed down a GeoIP funnel that screws everything and won't let me buy, which is most of the time... Grrrr... But that's another rant. Or it might have been just popping up "updates" like Java and Adobe. Either way, Steam left a bad taste in my mouth.

Anyways, if you can use Steam, I guess it will work. There's a demo for it.

I'd like to give it a spin, so I'll likely suck it up and waste an hour later today when I'm feeling like I need a 12th or 15th drink.

Deus Ex - Best - game - ever!

(But be sure to install the patch and edit the ini files so that you can play it w/o the CD.)

Not fantasy/sci-fi, but a good game of chess is relaxing and strategy.

http://www.chess.com/

I play my brothers on it mostly.
And it is a well laid out site.

It doesn't complain about adblock plus either like another chess site I used before.

Yet more good suggestions folks, thank you. I would play chess but when at the in-laws it seems to act like a magnet for spectators.

In addition, in case anyone else is hunting around similarly:

The original X-COM, "UFO: Enemy Unknown" ticked so many boxes for me. It's the only game I've ever played through three full times. There's an updated version which is really nice here: http://ufo.ufo-extraterrestrials.com/   - and it's only $4.99!?

The downside is that's it's delivered via Steam. I have had a lot of trouble with those clods. They cannot seem to get the hang of my address at all, and keep insisting that I don't live in the country that I do!

I remember the original. It was amazing. Great sound effects too. You hear them in movies and TV shows today even!

But it's good to hear that I'm not the only one that's had trouble with Steam. I really loathe stubborn GeoIP stuff...

It's terrible. They certainly do not add anything at all to my gaming experience. Just another flabby layer of crud in some terrible black and grey UI. Who are these clowns?

One of us could always gift the game to you...then shouldn't have to worry about their GeoIP thing hanging you up.

That's a good option, and one I will definitely bear in mind! Thou art most kind.

If I track something down that's steam-only and we give this a try, what sort of payment options would be acceptable?

You can either PayPal me the money or send me DC credits for the amount.  Easy peasy...

Ok, I knew I'd forgotten to mention something :-[

I was actually after this:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/37030/

But having seen what YOU found - I'll take the X-Com pack! Is my donation still acceptable?
