Settings not being saved
« on: November 15, 2010, 06:20 PM »
Forgive me if this is not the right place to ask this.

I've been a long time user and can't live without FARR. I recently moved to Windows 7 and I notice that FARR is not saving my settings. When I restart FARR or Windows, it reverts to the default settings. I have the latest 2.90.02, which also seems a little odd, because the the version on the web is 2.90.01 in DcUpdater.

hmmmm

on win7 it should be trying to save in your DOcuments and Settings\AppData\etc

if you copied over your configdir.ini file to your new directory you might try editing that
make sure its not overriding the config directory, OR try manually setting that to some directory you have write access to.

let me know if that helps!

funny, i had the same problem today...

i overwrited the configdir.ini so that the FARR ini file is saved in the root folder of FARR

when running FARR with administrator rights it seems to work, but if i ask FARR to run with admin rights, it does not launch at startup...

maybe i could run it in portable mode ?

i changed the write access so that the FARR directory is writable by current user
and it seems to work perfectly now  :D

I found ConfigDir.ini in "C:\Program Files (x86)\FindAndRunRobot". I opened it and added this line:

CONFIGDIR = c:\configs\farr

Restarted FARR. I saw that it created files and directories in the above directory. I changed the skin. Restarted FARR. It still opens with the default skin. I set the security setting to allow full control for all authenticated users, and restarted FARR, and still the same problem.

I am using Windows 7 x64.

can you check:
  • is it just the skin setting or if its all settings that it doesnt save?
  • is it writing the FindAndRunRobot.ini file in C:\configs\farr when you exit the program? (does the date of that file change), and just not reading it maybe?

I have my config.ini file set to set all settings in the FARR directory, but none of my settings are being save.  Not the search folders list, I had to go into the ini file to manually change it.  Also, There is BackupIni folder that hold multiple copies of identical files (with different version names of course).  My FARR directory is not in %programfiles%, so there shouldn't be any permission issues from Windows 7 (32bit version).

edit your configdir.ini file and tell it to store the settings in the current directory or set the portable flag to true.

My mistake.  When I said config.ini, i ment ConfigDir.ini.  I have the CONFIGDIR = . line un-commented.
where do i find this portable flag, it's not in FindAndRunRobot.ini from what I can tell.
Also, according to the properties page of FindAndRunRobot.ini, it has not been modified or accessed since I last udated.
I've also searched through my computer fo any other FindAndRunRobot.ini files that the program could be using, and found none, save for the one in my FARR directory.

Sorry for being away for so long. Family visiting.

Mouser, to answer your questions:
- No settings are being saved
- I don't see a FindAndRunRobot.ini file in C:\configs\farr, but I do see a FindAndRunRobot.ini.tmp

Also, a new annoyance: I get a dialog box when I start FARR:
---------------------------
Advanced Options: FindAndRunRobot.exe - No Disk
---------------------------
There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive Z:.
---------------------------
Cancel   Try Again   Continue
---------------------------

I had a network path mapped to Z once, but no longer. I can't remember configuring FARR to do anything with that drive though.

hit cancel or continue a few times until it goes away, then go to options and launch history and see if you find a reference to that drive.

I zapped the config directory and I think that's fixed the problem with the missing disk. I don't see that dialog anymore.

Any ideas on the configuration not saving problem?

try making the first line of your ConfigDir.ini file:
PORTABLE=TRUE

it should then save all settings in the application directory -- assuming it has permission to do so (if it doesn't then your settings wont be saved).

I just tried what you suggested, and my settings are still not being saved.
Should keeps the "CONFIGDIR = ." line next to "portable=true" line?
My FARR directory is in a Drobox forlder, so there shouldn't be any permission issues.  I run quite a few portable apps from Dropbox without issues, even the ones that wouldn't not run form a ProgramFiles directory.

i tried this on Win 7 64-bit and it worked. however i didn't install Farr into "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" but into another folder called "Programs" where i keep all my portable apps.

CONFIGDIR = .
PORTABLE=TRUE

I just tried that, it didn't work for me.  those three lines go in ConfigDir.ini right?  I don't have FARR installed in Program Files either.

i think the PORTABLE=TRUE already forces the configuration directory to be in same directory as the app, so the CONFIGDIR line *should* be unnesc.

if you are trying to use FARR from a dropbox directory and having troubles.. why not first try it in a directory in your documents path, and see if that works first.  if so, then the problem has something to do with the dropbox setup and farr.

Tried the portable flag. I gave "Authorized user" full control, but still does not save settings.

Removed the portable flag. Copied over the FindAndRunRobot.ini file from my older Vista (which had UAC off) hard drive to C:\Configs\Farr and changed the values manually. It reads from that file correctly, but does not write to it.

I tried ProcMon with the WriteFile Operation enabled and I don't see FARR trying to write anything. Perhaps, I'm missing something in my ProcMon settings, but I'm willing to try any suggestions.

Ran FARR form a folder on the desktop.  Sam problem, refuse to save settings.
By the way, how many people are actually having this problem?  There aren't a lot of people in this conversation.

so even on the desktop its not saving your settings?

can you see if you can find the FindAndRunRobot folder in your user documents area, and see if its saving it in there?

I went through my whole C drive with FARR to see if there are any other FindAndRunRobot.ini files, and I can't find any other apart from the one in my FARR directory.
