Other stuff gets run only when I am actively using it.

How could you all live without AutoHotkey? 8)

If you have no idea what it does, you probably need it! https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1167.0

Tray stuff aside -- mIRC, Opera and GoogleTalk are virtually always open.  More often than not, xplorer2 and EditPad Pro are also open.

Sure - it's based on the same component (Scintilla) - it is a very cool Editor, but I like Scite better - cant say why - it's a feeling ;)

Hey, I missed this one. So it would be:

  • foobar2000
  • Miranda (up to some point)
  • Opera
  • TED Notepad
  • xplorer²

And the usual security software coupled with FARR to launch everything. Zaine, how things changed since your first post, huh? ;D

The single most used application on my PC - with the possible exception of Firefox or Thunderbird - is The Journal 4, which is - no surprise here: a journaling/writing application.  I do keep a regular journal with it, but I also do all blog writing in it - it can send articles to any blog you are using. Also, I keep numerous other specialized journals in it. E.g., every time I make any kind of configuration change on my PC, I log it into a PC Maintenance journal. I have about 7 years of data in that journal alone. Whenever I start experiencing a new problem I start performing searches and find anything I changed that could have had an impact and caused the problem.

I also write reviews and compose them in The Journal. It's basically my one, all-around writing/logging tool.   :)

What a fabulous question!

Now this is an old thread, but I think it would be interesting to know about what has changed for  people who posted or read it a year, even two years ago.

The ones I always have open are:

Firefox
Editplus
a43

And FileBox Extender, if that counts, although I think that gets into what is always running which is a whole nother show.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if somebody made a Firefox extension that was a real everyday jeans text editor and then made another one that was a file manager!

If we are obliged to run a squillion Firefox extensions anyway, why not have some to replace EditPlus and a43, is what I am thinking.

But this is not the place for such musings, I digressed. I'm sorry.

So, for the ones who posted or just read it long ago, is your answer still the same?

And for people who are new like me, what applications do you live in?

does ai roboform live in the tray? i am one of those ai roboform lovers also. but its not in my tray.  maybe its an option.

there was a time when i used to try to keep my system tray empty, to maximize pc performance.
but then i thought WTF am i paying for this fast cpu for and wasting all my time idleing, i rather have a tray full of fun stuff :)

I know that quote is OLD, but even so, i agree!
ppl are like "oh, why have u got so much crap in ur bar for". hello? quad core was made for me, the multi tasker!

which software app stays open on your desktop all day?

I guess you didn't ask for must-have apps in the sys-tray, [Edited: I didn't notice at first how old the thread actually is: 5/5/5 !], so I will have to say Thunderbird and Firefox, only.

Almost everything else is either minimized/closed to sys-tray, or not open at all, except of course for programs like PS Tray Factory, Rainlendar, BetaClock, safety programs, etcetera.
