Eventually I upgraded to SiteSpinner Pro for simple sites for friends; more complicated work requires DW 8, which I like in spite of occasionally having to tweak the generated code for W3C compliance.

it started out as a small open source software, but seems has grown a bit beyond that. It's still free though, and an excellent way to begin building websites for free.

NVU is dead (under this name it is no longer developed). The previously mentioned Kompozer is the updated version of it.

Guess that's why I forgot it.

Must be an old FAQ on the site.  One thing that drives me nuts is trying to figure out the date stuff on the web was written.  A Google brings up some new breakthrough, then you see it was "new" 8 years ago!!
