Online Multi Anti Virus Scanners?.
« on: January 05, 2009, 03:04 PM »

I know a lot of online multi anti virus scanners such as virustotal or jotti and many of them. But I do not know any of them that can scan more than 20MB (preferably more than 100Mb). Anyone knows such a multi anti virus scanner online (not single antivirus -- the ones like the virus total) that can scan that much large files?

Thank Jim.

There's also NoVirusThanks, but file size limit is 20MB.

maybe zip it in multiple volumes, at least some scanners should scan inside archives.

hi justice -- that was what I was wondering and thought too --- but I thought that when splitting the files in smaller files in rar or zip and sending them independently one by one to scan would give "no virus" report as the file is splitted, may be the virus might be splitted too?... (don't laugh - as always, I am no computer expert)...

But as I understand from you, it is possible to scan by splitted files.... Is that correct?.. In example, if I split 100MB file into five 20MB files, and scan them seperately, will it give the absolutely same report as if it was scanned as the whole file in entirety? Is it same for RAR, EXE and all types, including unknown extensions that can be changed to known extensions, providing that they are not password protected?...

I've never tested that gorinw13 but it's an interesting question. I think the virus would be in all parts (or at least all parts with infected executables).

Any ideas from anyone else on this issue? If we divide a 100MB file into five 20MB file parts by winzip or winrar, and submit all these parts to online multi virus scanners one by one (because online multi virus scanners do not allow more than 20MB per file), will the result be exactly same just like we scan the 100MB file? Of course I guess the online virus scanner will not know if these files are linked to each other because we send them seperately to it, and it will analyze each one respectively on their own. so the question: if there is a virus, will the result be same for 20MBx5 one by one and 100MB(original)?... Can we bypass the limit of the online virus scanners this way?

IMO the chances of a virus scanner picking up a virus inside a split archive is slim. It'd require the virus to be small enough to be in a single part of the archive (1 file).

I'd expect very few, if any, virus scanners to pick up a partial virus; the reason behind this opinion is that they probably hard code against that sort of thing as it'd make false positives too numerous.

Of course I'm no expert, just a lowly jack-of-all-trades.
