Homepage for about $100?
« on: March 07, 2008, 05:03 AM »
Hi,

I'm considering to get up a homepage to test a business idea. Since it might totally fail I don't want to invest too much... is it possible to get a professional-looking, simple site for about $100 that includes - like an extended business card - only a page of text, a page with contact information and a contact form (info entered would be sent by email to me)? Where?

In the past I tried a do-it-yourself system where you just modify an existing layout, but although I spent lots of time with it I wasn't happy with the result.

Perhaps if you have some examples one of us could whip you up something. Did you have any particular standard you want to follow? Which browsers are your primary concern? Do you need dynamic content? etc are also relevant questions.

brotherS: There are some amazing templates available for free.

Please take a look at http://www.webtechda...-template-resources/ and let me know if you like any template. We can go from there.

brotherS: do you already have a place to host, or do those $100 include both webdesign and hosting?

I have no idea what design or templates would cost, but you can get simple hosting for far less than $100/month :)

I bet! ;) No, I already secured a host, I only need the webdesign.

I'd say ask your local university or yellow pages which should have some freelancers / recent graduates or find someone to do you a favor :)

You can get design done off-shore for relatively cheap. A fresh grad in some countries makes $300+ out of university. $100 can go a long way there.

Go and grab a Template here:
http://www.templatew.../free_templates.html

They are very professional looking and would work great to 'test' an idea.  Even though I design websites for a living I grabbed a template here to put together a website in a couple hours to test something (wanted a nice face on the idea).

I recommend getting your hands on a CMS. Fastest way to go, especially with the way they are quite easy to use these days. I use Drupal, which has become a lot more user friendly these days. Version 6.1 is the latest, but I recommend version 5.7 instead because its been around longer and is more tested. There are also more add-ons for 5.7 since its been around for a while.

Here are some videocasts to get you started on installing Drupal and getting it up and running: http://dudertown.com/

If you can state the kind of features that you are looking to have on your website (without revealing too much of your business idea) I can suggest which modules to use or maybe a different CMS more suited to the job.

I've written a series of video tutorials on setting up a web site using Drupal as well.
