internet information manager...
« on: December 23, 2007, 05:21 AM »
Hey guys, what are the things you use to keep track of the info you get from the net? I mostly depend on my memory to recall what the name of the software was which i wanted to download, or what the site was which i thought i should add to my bookmarks list, etc. but it aint perfect. I many times have to redo the google searches, trying to put in the exact phrases which i had earlier googled to get to the results, n sumtimes i just forget about the thing completely until i see it again one day and say "I thought i tried that!". I used Cogitum co citer (http://www.cogitum.c...cker-text/more.shtml) for a while before formatting my system and thought it was good :), but i need something with more features. Before reinstalling it i thought it would be better to get second opinions. What do you say?

I recently purchased MS OneNote 2007 for several purposes, "internet information manager" being one of them. It doesn't work flawlessly with Opera (my favoured browser), but I've managed to work around it, so with the push of a button, the text I've copied from a website will be pasted into a new note.

EverNote here as it grabs the source as a link at bottom of note

OneNote doesn't save the time in the actual note, but hovering the notes shows the date of "capture". I suppose if you'd use this much every day, date only isn't good enough

Again, though, this is using Opera as browser and a little workaround for OneNote. Maybe if you use IE or FireFox (with extension) the time and date is also in the note. I wouldn't know.

& best of all theres a Holiday Sale. Sale ends January 15th. http://www.evernote....oads/holidaysale.php

Not a fan of M$ products so I can't say much about OneNote

Surfulater, I actually prefer it to Evernote for managing web stuff, Bookmarks or saved/excerpts of pages
I like that you can  organise in tree/folders and it is very actively developed

there currently a xmas discount and
there a new (better) discount for DC members in January

Surfulater would do that too
Advantage of Evernote (paid version) would be you can search text in images.
Also, Surfulater doesnt work well with Opera (does anything?)

EDIT For a lot of info I would still favour Surfulater, but read up about how they store/manage stuff - it's probably a personal preference...

Highlight any text in a web page and send it to google note book.
It saves the text and the website.
Or just save the website without text.
It's on google's servers so after a reformat just go to google, get the  notebook and login.
Everything is there.
And it's free.
That's one of my solutions anyway.

I many times have to redo the google searches, trying to put in the exact phrases which i had earlier googled to get to the results

Not a Web information storage utility, but as an adjunct you might like Nir Sofer's freeware MyLastSearch:

MyLastSearch utility scans the cache and history files of your Web browser, and locate all search queries that you made with the most popular search engines (Google, Yahoo and MSN). The search queries that you made are displayed in a table with the following columns: Search Text, Search Engine, Search Time, Web Browser, and the search URL.
You can select one or more search queries and then copy them to the clipboard or save them into text/html/xml file.

thanks for the opinions guys.

But i think id stick with cogitum cociter for now, its faster (and smaller) than any of the programs mentioned above, and doesnt hog resources. Seeing these actually made me realise that all i want is a basic info manager :-[. i would recommend cociter to any of you guys who feel that the "big guys" are a little too much for them!

Manimatters, that seems like a nice simple app - shame it doesn't work with Firefox.

I use Scrapbook (a Firefox extension).  I've posted about it in a new thread.

i have been using for two years now a combination of textsaver http://www.programat...ix.de/textsaver.html
(unfortunately, its only available in german, but i am sure, there must be some english equivalent somewhere)

and www.toread.cc to store a copy of everything that i found useful, in my gmail account. with that, i can easily run search in my gmail account, and find it later again.
