PLEASE STOP POSTING
« on: November 05, 2007, 07:32 PM »
I already have two pages of threads to catch up on and you folks are replying and posting at a 2:1 ratio. My list is growing. Stop It! Let me catch up gosh darn it.

I think part of why tinjaw cant catch up is that he is posting on IRC. Here is the latest quote

[08:40pm] <tinjaw> deo, there are several ways
[08:41pm] <tinjaw> deo, let me get it up and running
[08:41pm] <dcDeozaan> ok
[08:41pm] <tinjaw> first way
[08:42pm] <tinjaw> when you have TGB running
[08:42pm] <scancode> Shamurai, ok

As you can see, its entirely his fault for posting nonsense ;-)

2 pages? only 2 pages??

I am 89 pages behind and I keep telling myself that some day I will catch up.  :-[

2 pages? I used to keep up every day, but then I took a break for about a month or so... back in March or so. Now I'm at 43 pages of unread messages.

I just check the first page of unread messages every now and then and wait for the monthly newsletter to find topics I missed.

The solution is easy - stop reading them all. Seriously. I can't keep up in any of the forums I participte in, so I don't even try. I only read a few threads with titles that are interesting.

There's just no way to keep up  - so why even try?

Actually, it'd be interesting to know how many of us read every post (or at least have the number of unread posts always at zero).
I check every new post, not only to see if something interests me, but also to check for spam. (no, i don't really read every one of them, there are several threads that i just ignore the content and check for spam). So, i usually keep up with the forum.

I have 131 pages of unread posts! You're doing really well with only 89, tinjaw (if you even get around to reading this one, that is  :P).

are we talking about this link at the top? here's screenshot of my unread posts.. obviously checking every 5 minutes does help to keep down the pages.. :)

I'm using just "since last visit", not all unread - counting on interesting threads having new posts since last visit :)

Ah - I missed that link. Good find f0dder - makes me feel better. There are only 7 threads on a single page now (versus the 131 pages of unread posts, which presumably go back to March 15, 2005!).

EDIT: Nope. Goes back to your join date, so July 7, 2005 in my case.

I hit that little button that reads "Mark all messages as read" once I finished checking up the threads that are of my interest. Once upon a time I had tons of pages containing unread threads, but one good day I hit the global button and... magic! Now everything is brand new ;D

At least you guys name your threads with meaningful names, that makes the reviewing task far easier. Now, let's keep up with the high speed posting to annoy tinjaw even more :P

There's an easy way to keep up that I adopted about a decade ago.

"Unread Topics" is listing 25 threads I am supposed not to have read, but I know for sure that I have read 5 of them. It seems not to be too accurate. Of course there are hundreds or thousands of topics I haven't read. Anyway, I have never before used this feature, and I don't think I will again.

- on the contrary: I am keeping all cookies and whathaveyougot. But it was not until long after I had posted  that I noticed, that all the topics were from "today" only.

Just to state the obvious, Unread Posts includes threads you have read previously, but that have new postings in them.

I don't read every post. I read the subject headings and if it sounds interesting I read it. If not, I mark it as read and move on.

Occasionally when I log in from another computer it resets my list of unread topics. That hasn't happened in quite some time though. Probably about a year since that last happened.
