General Software Discussion / Re: Windows 11 Announced
« Last post by cthorpe on October 07, 2021, 11:47 AM »
I used various flavors of Linux as my sole desktop and laptop OS for maybe 2 years.  I think I spent more time dealing with annoying issues than actually working on my work.

A couple of months ago I threw in the towel and went back to Win 10.  When I sit down to work on my computer, it just works.  When I want to install something, it just works.  All of my hardware just works.

My desktop isn't compatible with Win 11.  If it lasts long enough to see the end of Win 10 updates, I'll probably do the registry hack to put Win 11 on it.

My current laptop is a recent purchase of a high end Lenovo business machine.  It passes all the checks with flying colors.  I'm still going to wait for a bit before taking the plunge there.

I still use linux on my home server, VPS, and in VMs that I spin up for various reasons.  It's phenomenal for many workloads, but desktop is not one of them.

Web Link Captor / Malware Bytes thinks this is ransomware
« Last post by cthorpe on October 20, 2018, 11:38 PM »
I was just using Web Link Captor to compile reviews of a list of PS4 games, and Malware Bytes blocked the program as ransomware.  I had just downloaded Web Link Captor from here a few minutes before this happened.

I've included the details from Malware Bytes below.

Let me know if there is any more information you need.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: 1 Year of SpiderOak One (1TB of storage) for $15

Fences, which has a 5 device license in one of the lower tiers if you were to get the SpiderOak deal, is an amazing bit of software for Windows users that keep icons on their desktop.  I've been using it so long that I find myself incredibly frustrated any time I have to use a computer that does not have it installed.

Edit: It is a 5 device license, not a 3 license pack as I originally posted.

I recently "burned" a bunch of SD cards for a bunch of Raspberry Pis.  I found that Etcher was considerably slower than the copy of Win32DiskImager (.07) that I've had kicking around for years.  I didn't time it or anything, but I'd say it was at least twice as long with the exact same card and image file.

https://sourceforge....cts/win32diskimager/ (Yeah, it's sourceforge. I know.)

Etcher did seem "safer" and "prettier."  But the speed when trying to prep 15 cards was a deal-breaker.

I'm on Win 10 64bit.

Living Room / Re: Movies you've seen lately

Swiss Army Man was amazing.  Absolutely beautiful.  And it has the longest running fart joke I've ever seen.

Picked up a copy of "Swiss Army Man" from the library.  Having a hard time convincing my wife to give it a go with me.  May end up watching it by myself, which is something I rarely do.

Nice find.  Looks good.

My mistake.  I saw the ref at the end of the link and assumed it was your referral link.

Carry on.  I'll see myself out.
13
Please be sure to disclose referral links.

@app - Thx for the heads up. My GF is a big fan of SitePoint books. She has several.

Purchased it for my GF. Unfortunately it appears there's a glitch with redeeming the voucher. Which surprised me because I've purchased discounts deals through AppSumo before and never had a problem.

Looks like that issue has been resolved.  AppSumo has a new update:

UPDATE #1: All suspension issues are NOW FIXED! Additionally, all accounts now have offline access. Sorry about the "Sumo Effect" issues and enjoy! :-)
15
I cannot find any way to ADD the $49 LIFETIME ACCESS deal into my existing sitepoint user profile.
I have trouble-tickets submitted to both Appsumo and Sitepoint.
(I bet they make me create a new, secondary user account JUST for this new, $49 deal).

I just added it to my existing Sitepoint account.

1 - Log into Sitepoint
2 - Purchase the AppSumo deal (or go to the product in your AppSumo purchases)
3 - Click the link under Code (it is the url with /voucher/ in the address)
4 - You will get to a screen that says you have a voucher and there will be a button to apply the voucher to your account
5 - Verify by going to "Membership" in your profile

Post New Requests Here / Simple auto-saving text editor for mercurial commits
« Last post by cthorpe on July 21, 2015, 10:57 AM »
I am looking for a simple text editor that auto-saves and closes with a single hotkey combination.

I want to hook this editor to mercurial so whenever I do a commit the editor pops up, I can type my commit message, and then I can hit Ctrl+Enter (or something like that) to auto-save and close the editor to complete the commit.

Ideally, the editor would have word-wrap, the ability to use the mouse to select text, and copy/cut/paste functionality.

I know you can put your commit message into the command line, but I tend to write lengthy commits, so I would prefer to be in a text editor of some kind.

Edit: I'm looking for this in Windows

N.A.N.Y. 2015 / Re: NANY 2015 Release: WhenLast (Android app)

Running this on my HTC One.

Only issue I see so far is one of my categories does not have a count for how many things are there.

So I see

"All (7) |  Aquarium  |  Home (2)"

Aquarium has 5 tasks

I was actually looking for something to help me keep track of regular maintenance on my son's aquarium, and this is perfect.

EDIT - Nevermind, I see that was addressed already with the titles being cut off.

EDIT Again - I've added enough tabs to allow them to scroll on the screen, and Aquarium is still cutting off the number of tasks.

Developer's Corner / Rewriting work for hire after the fact...
« Last post by cthorpe on September 18, 2014, 12:00 AM »
I recently found myself in the position of writing a small amount of code as an independent contractor.  This code interfaces with a popular platform used by specific academic researchers to provide missing functionality.

Obviously, the code I am producing is "work for hire" and therefore the property of the body that hired me.

While researching the problem, I found that a huge number of people out there want/need the functionality I coded.

So...

The code I am producing under my current contract is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database.

If, after this project is done and I get paid, could I rewrite this in a completely different manner and sell it?

For example, could I create the same functionality in, say, Python or Ruby with a nosql database and then market it as a different product?

I guess the question is this... they clearly own the code I wrote for them... but do they own the ideas I had to solve the problem?
22
It's the African and Russian unit pack.

I don't have either one of those.  I'll take either one or both.

Thanks!
23
Oh jesus, Cthorpe. That joke was cringe worthy. So, what do you want? All of them or anything specific?

Thanks for some extra chuckles Deo. Always appreciated

I thought I wanted OMD2 and/or Terraria, but apparently I already own them.  Darn Steam sales.

What DLC do you have for Crusader Kings 2?  I own the game and some of the DLC, but not all of it.

So far it seems more responsive than the last version under Win 7 with 654 books (pdf and epubs).
