is there a way to control the container of a note? they are too big. i keep trying to create new notes around existing notes, and especially below them, the software assumes i'm adding to the existing note, and the margin extends a good 3-4 lines below the content. i want the container to end pretty close to where the content is. i don't want all that space, it is very annoying.

A double click with the mouse should force a new note to open - although you will still need to leave one line after the previous text.

Farr has been working wonderfully for years - but all of sudden my search history has disappeared. I'm not aware of having changed any settings and I haven't added or altered any hardware on the computer. I am not searching network drives.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Does the Sunset version work ok in New Zealand - eg GST reports?
If not, is there a free international version that will work?

For those interested in the distribution graphs, it may be worth having a look at the Wikipedia article on Pareto.
One section reads as follows:

Treesheets presents an idea in a CONTAINER...then any sub-ideas will be INSIDE that container, and you can do this to infinity. This is presented VISUALLY in just that way, which is awesome. Furthermore, the navigation features of Treesheets have this cool visual effect of making you feel like your digging INTO an idea.

What is frustrating is that there doesn't seem to be any way of drag n dropping an idea out of one container and into another.
To me, this is an essential feature of organising information - being able to go back after I have made an initial layout and moving stuff around - maybe between two layouts that are side by side.
Then again, maybe there is a way to do this in TreeSheets and I've just missed it. Help, anyone?

Tornado Notes - and it was great.
Somewhere around ver 5 or 6 I lost half my data when transferring to a new machine - and because it was a "no longer supported version" I gave up on the program.
Then EverNote looked like the way to go - until it disappeared into the cloud along with the readable ink feature - Grrr
Now I'm trying to learn my way around InfoQube

One things puzzles me - the distance from earth to moon is given as 400,000 km and the distance from earth to sun as 1,400,000 km and worse still the distance from earth to Alpha Centauri is 1,000,000 km (even closer than the sun).
Have I totally misread something - or have other people seen this too?

I tried the earlier versions of Dragon 3/4/5 and the time spent making corrections took longer than typing it would have (at about 30-40 wpm).
Convinced that it had to be the way ahead I persisted in getting upgrades to new versions with ongoing disappointment at the amount of money I had spent for the benefit gained.
However I tried again with ver 10 and was impressed with improvements. Now I have got ver 11 (and a Win 7 64 bit computer with 8Gb RAM and an i7 2.8Ghz cpu) and a Plantronics bluetooth headset. Just beginning to work with it but it looks really good. Although - I did have one occasion when it slowed to an abject crawl (like 5-10 seconds before responding to a phrase!) Next time I fired it up the problem had disappeared. Not sure what happened - a web search indicated that folks have experienced that sort of problem from time to time. The little I have used the headset has been sitting in front of the screen. However I have tried it in an adjacent room and it worked fine, even without a clear line of sight. Twenty meters up the hall and with 5 walls and a shower in between it didn't work at all! For walking around in the same room you should be just fine.
In case you're wondering - no, I didn't use it to dictate this. I don't tend to use it unless I know I am going to be doing a significant amount of typing/dictation and I didn't intend to ramble on as much as I have.

I LOVE IT when people reply to requests for information with pointers to further information on the topic plus tangentially related information. The reason is that from time to time I come across information that I probably would never have found in my own google search - maybe because I didn't phrase the search terms well enough or didn't bother paging through to the 680th result.
I agree that a comprehensive review of a product by an experienced user which covers exactly the ground you want to know about is great. However, I'm more than happy to sift through a dozen or so pointers which might (or might not) address YOUR particular needs -because one of them may be really helpful to ME.
This, I think, is where the value of a forum to the community is not the same as the value of the forum to an individual in that community. An individual may seek very detailed advice on specific techniques for catching a rare species of fish. There may be a deluge of replies about catching related species and perhaps even some pointers to sites promoting new and unusual fish finders. Some of these replies will be extremely helpful to half a dozen lurkers in the forum who seldom post but visit daily because of the amazing helpfulness and friendliness of the forum. I do appreciate, though, it could be a bit frustrating for the original questioner. I think there is always going to be a bit of tension between the value to the individual and the value to the community. Perhaps flagging the post with a MAYBE USEFUL comment near the beginning would allow folk to skim past those posts if they wish.

From memory TeeChart Office can produce bubble charts similar to the one shown. It's free so could be worth a look.

Inkscape http://www.inkscape.org/ could be worth a try. It is open source freeware. A Desktop publishing program with a raster to vector utility (Potrace) now built in.

The program is yEd Graph Editor - and the price is right!
I only downloaded it myself a couple of days ago and have just begun to look at it. The range of diagrams you can create appears excellent, and a good number of samples are provided - some of which are business modeling with swim lanes etc.
The output looks very nice too.

Second, assuming that visual learning materials that structure an instructor-led class are a requirement, does anyone have any recommended alternatives to a Powerpoint or other slide-based presentation? Particularly something that will enhance engagement and retention for the audience, provide structure and ensure consistency in presentation across multiple sessions of the same class topic, and be easily re-used in other formats (e.g. handouts or workbooks, etc.).

One solution that could be worth looking at is Vue http://vue.tufts.edu/index.cfm
Here is a snippet from their web page

One of the presentation benefits, is the ability to set up more than one pathway through a collection of slides so that you are not constrained to one particular linear sequence.

If nothing else, the price is right.

It might not be what you are looking for, but maybe it will be of help to someone.

Depending on how long the list is it may be worth a bit of quick massaging with Search and Replace to insert some characters to use as delimiters to help the program convert to a table with less errors.
If you have excel as well, it may be worth pasting into that and then using convert to columns where you can use either fixed length fields or delimiters. Again, you can do this in 2 or 3 stages so as to isolate one column by delimiters and then the remainder split by field length etc.
It all depends on how many items there are in the list how much trouble you can take massaging before it becomes just as quick to enter it bit by bit

Hi Jerome,

I forgot about the flashing background - had the same problem ages ago myself. Right click on the background (if you can!) I can't remember what I did to stop it - Esc or Ctrl C or Ctrl Break ...
Anyway right click, choose properties and change the Basic/fill Pattern to anything other than Random. I've never had any use for/interest in the random background so as soon as I removed it I forgot about it and didn't even bother to report it to Chan.

I use Axon Idea Processor all the time.
Mindmapping is just part of what it does, and if you only want to use it for that you might not find the presentation aspect as polished as you would like.
My main use for it is creating notes for speaking - collecting points and subpoints, moving them around on screen until happy with the layout, using a hierarchy of colour Red, Blue, Green, Brown, Black to indicate levels, and usually printing out one A4 sheet landscape from which to speak for 20-25 minutes.
On a regular basis I open a particular Access table, excel spreadsheet and Word template. One click on an icon I created in Axon opens them all.
Weighted decision trees, critical path analysis and some simulation models are other things you can play with.
You can export to html. I'm hoping for better export to MS Office programs in the future ... Because it does so many things it may take a bit of time trying it out to get a feel for its potential, but I reckon it is worth investigating (no association other than a happy user for the last 10 years or so)
The author Chan Bok is very responsive to any problems you may experience.

Here is an example of using vlookup.
You need to create the list of data first - sort by the first field (the one you will be using for reference), then name it (Alt/insert/name/define)
Use insert function and fill in the boxes.

Here is an image (I hope!) that shows the end result. Use Ctrl` (Control grave) to toggle between showing formula and text

I'm assuming you already have a table of data somewhere where "word", "word1", "word2" etc, are already existing as rows (or columns), and that what you want to do is to have the related items filled in whenever you choose a particular instance of "word".
If this is the case, then using VLOOKUP or HLOOKUP would probably be you answer.

If this is not the case you may need to supply more details so we can get a better understanding of your requirements.

are you familiar with the shortcuts:-
Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+9
Ctrl+1 will "close" all items in grid (one "level") Ctrl+9 will expand all items to the 9th level
Ctrl+Shift+1 [through to 9] will work likewise for selected item(s)

Looks like I'd better work my way through the shortcuts to see what they do. I'd just assumed the functionality would be there in the menus, and shortcuts would be a quicker way of doing stuff - once you knew what you were doing.

Hi Pierre,

I am having difficulty with items and sub items.
I have maybe 25-30 items each of which may have from 1-30 sub items over time. When browsing them, it is important to be able to quickly view all sub items, then swith back to only showing items - but I can't figure out to do this. If I select all items and try and "show all sub items" an error message says to turn off the filter first. When I do, and try again, only the first item on the list expands (or perhaps the last one clicked on if I select some of them using Shift or Control.
Hunting through the manual didn't seem to help - yet presumably this is something people frequently would want to do.
Have I just missed something blindingly obvious? How can I rapidly switch between seeing only items, and seeing all items plus sub items (within a category which I have filtered for)

Another program it might be worth looking at is GenoPro. For the money it has a lot of features and seems to handle importing GEDCOM files quite well. It is good for a visual browse around a list of people most of whom are confirmed as "in your tree" plus a host of others who might be - but as yet you haven't nailed down the precise connections. I once realised there was a connection with another family through one of my paternal great grandmothers family when I had actually been looking for a connection through a paternal great grandfather.
