Here is my latest attempt:
popcap2.png

You can download the new beta here.
9977
but if you take the Win7 Taskbar into the screenshot there's still this selection.

but it's selecting the taskbar area right? in other words its highlighting the taskbar?
9978
Ok I think i see the problem you were experiencing; i've uploaded a new beta version (same url), can you give it a try and see if it's fixed?
9979
Ok this sounds like a bug i really need to fix.. i will look into it but please don't let me forget to fix it.

I thought since it's the "area" mode screenshot captor shouldn't consider windows and the active window at all and just grab what's under the cursor?

this has been changed so that SC will still try to do this -- but in your case it sounds like its not detecting a valid region.

General Software Discussion / Re: forum password suggestion
« Last post by mouser on February 24, 2013, 11:21 AM »
You are right about the 8 character password reminder -- it's annoying how it is now.

Hide email address -- i think i need to change the text for that -- we actually ignore that field and ALWAYS HIDE email addresses no matter what -- you cannot expose your email address even if you try.
9981
It should be trying to highlight the active window or window under the cursor.. does that make sense in terms of what it is selecting?

Screenshot Captor / Re: having trouble with undo
« Last post by mouser on February 24, 2013, 08:36 AM »
Hi aparante.

Download the new beta from here, it has better undo support for objects and more bugfixes.

You can discard all changes from "File -> Discard changes since last file save" menu.

I'm not sure I understand what happened with crop.. I wonder if you aren't using Double-Clicks of the mouse when you should be using single clicks? It kind of sounds that way from your descriptions.

I suppose if this really is going to be a dialog used by new users, a "Help Me!" button that took them to the forum here might not be a terrible idea..

Screenshot Captor / What buttons should be in Screenshot Captor post-capture dialog?
« Last post by mouser on February 23, 2013, 10:34 PM »
Im trying to decide which few buttons should be in the post-capture popup dialog.
Personally I don't use it, but I understand it can be especially important to new users who might be scared by the main interface.

Here's the current dialog:
postcap1.png

What I plan to do is remove the Thumbnail button as it's not so important; and i think i'll compress the clipboard options into one button with a drop down selection; that will allow several different clipboard copy options (copy image, copy file path, copy file object) into one button.

I could leave it at that and just remove a row of buttons -- that would have the advantage of being even less intimidating.

But I could also add one or two more rows of 2 buttons each (any more than that and I think users will feel overwhelmed).

Any suggestions?

Latest update will let you save and restore settings files -- should make it a bit easier to switch between modes of operation.

TIP: Advanced users can manually edit saved settings files to have them only include a few options that they care about -- when you load those files any options not found in the file will be left alone.

Yet a new version up with more bug fixes and minor features.
9987
you are right, it shouldn't be there -- just a copy and paste by me.  i will remove.
9988
cschw, the %num% field is only for filenames -- can't be used in comments.
9989
It's the weekend, have some patience.
9990
Just a note about the new border fixes:  The graphics library can be aggressive about caching images, so you need to turn the border option on and off in order to see change of results.
9991
new version up, hopefully fixes the border color issue.
also i improved a weird maximization bug that was causing sc to forget the un-maximized size of its window.

let me know what other bugs you can find.

ps. check out the new arrow-text edit button -- should make it easier to put more text on your arrows.
9992
Thanks so much xcopy, that's a good bug that you caught.
Ath -- should I make the eraser use same size as paintbrush?

Nice

There are quite a few new little tweaking options in this beta, related to speed of file saving (and to a lesser extent) drawing and zooming, when dealing with images that have transparency information and many objects on screen at the same time.

To speed things up if you work with lots of objects you might want to experiment with:
1. Enabling the GDI+ library option on the Drawing Objects tab.
2. Enable flattening or assume opaque object backgrounds on Image File Format tab.
9995
Thanks everyone for the beta testing, it is really really appreciated.

I have uploaded a new version and tried to fix some of the bugs found above -- and made lots more tweaks.. again I hope i didn't break anything but wouldn't be surprised if i did, since there are so many moving parts when it comes to objects and transparency now..

So please do try the newly uploaded beta again.

And now to address some questions above.

Splice out should now mostly work on freehand paint player too.  what a pain(t).
Freehand paint flood feature -- the enclosing area must be a freehand paint drawn region.  You cannot flood fill an area defined by the normal background of the image.  I may try to add that as an option later.  It sounds like you were doing it right though, so please try again and let me know if its still not working.

Regarding multiple undos needed.. yes i'm afraid i don't have a good solution to that at this point.  Undo is still slightly wonky.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Just a feature idea

Hello mr toad and welcome to the site -- I'm glad you like it.

I think your idea is an excellent one -- on the global level though -- setting it per folder would be a bit overkill I think.

Living Room / Show us a picture of your.. CAR!!!
« Last post by mouser on February 21, 2013, 06:18 PM »
I'm a long time city dweller, and have never owned a car..

In the last few years I have started driving again, and am lucky enough to be near a ZipCar location (zipcar is a great by-the-hour car sharing/rental thing).

I'm actually pretty thrilled with ZipCar but it's not the most convenient thing, and after spending over $700 in car rental last year, I'm starting to dream of buying a used car.

If I'm honest with myself I have to admit that a big chunk of wanting to buy a car is to have a new gadget to love, but the freedom would also be nice.

Now truth be told, I can't really afford a car so i'm just kind of day dreaming about one and browsing craigslist.

But it has made me start to get really curious about cars, and which cars people like, and if people are happy owning cars, etc.

And then it occurred to me that it would be fun to have a Car thread.  So please, post an actual (not stock) photo of your car, and tell me why you like it or don't like it...

ps.  If you have a spare car you want to donate and live near Illinois, drive it on down to my house!
9998
I'd love some more testing -- especially in identifying anything i may have broken, as I'd like to release an official update tomorrow.

Screenshot Captor / Re: can't set hotkey to ctl e
« Last post by mouser on February 21, 2013, 08:11 AM »
Welcome to the site aparente

Hmm I see what you mean about Ctrl+E.. It seems that SC won't let you use any hotkeys that the program itself makes available for editing within the program (you can see the list of these in the Screenshot Captor menus).

Since these Screenshot Captor hotkeys are hardcoded, there is no easy way to make them available for binding to the hotkey for capturing.

May I suggest that Ctrl+E and basically any Ctrl+Letter key is probably not a great idea for using because its going to be commonly used in many programs and you don't want to use something so common?

Having said that, Screenshot Captor will soon be getting a new hotkey configuration dialog that will probably let you bind to Ctrl+E, so if you wait a month or so you'll probably be able to do what you want.
