You can use %num% for 3 digit numbering.

yes but read above for the difference between %num% and %numinc%.

One other thing - I recommend you add a horizontal scroll bar to that dialog now that you no longer word-wrap within it.

good point, thx for reminder!

Living Room / Re: Capture portion of screen and print

By default, you can use shift+prtscr to capture a portion of the screen.

Then if you have Screenshot Captor set up with default settings you'll see a pop-up dialog where you can choose print.

Or you can change SC options to autoprint after every capture and stay minimized.

You can also see options for adding captions to your print jobs, and doing more stuff -- but try first thing first and let us know if you have any trouble.

And what kind of capture are you performing?

Try changing the Smoothing filter options in the thumbnail dialog.

Yeah but so what.. if a user is going to do that then they weren't going to purchase from you anyway, so what do you care if they got a free license key or not.

We've used paypal here for many years and i've not seen any such problems..  in fact i still love paypal and am very happy with them.  i dont know anyone else with such small fees for small payments.

Maybe it's because of the nature of the site, but i don't really get what they say is going wrong..
Are they are saying that people who buy with paypal demand returns or that paypal contacts them after purchase and takes the money back saying the payment was made due to a stolen account?

Even if that happened a lot -- i'm not sure how that negatively effects a seller of digital goods -- they don't lose anything and paypal doesn't charge them anything when this happens, so what's the problem?

Could a hotkey (or button to the toolbar) be added to copy the caption of a saved image to the clipboard?

If you add a caption via the post-capture popup, it will also be in the comment/note section at the bottom of the main window, below file name.  If you click in there and do Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C you will copy it all to the clipboard.  Is that sufficient?

What cmpm said.

The QuickField is there for exactly this kind of purpose -- letting you quickly set part of the filenames for a sequence of screenshots without having to manually name each one.  Note that you can combine the quickfield with other stuff like date and time, etc.

Now one thing to note is that Screenshot Captor is adding a 3-digit number (001, 002, etc.) part automatically, in order to come up with a unique filename (tip: It will put this uniquifying number where you have %num% if you specify that explicitly, or add it to the end if not).  But one consequence of that is that if you take like:  quick001,quick002,quick003, and then DELETE quick002 and take a new screenshot, the new one will be named quick002 (not quick004). That's because SC is looking for the first available free number.

Now if you don't want it to do that, you have 2 options.  First, you could avoid using the number field completely and just use date and time.

Or, you can use the new %numinc% field in your filename, which will ALWAYS add a number, and it will always remember its value and increase one for each screenshot, even between reboots.  To reset the number after a project, just go back to that file naming dialog and change the "Auto Incrementing Number" field back to 1.

New beta is up.  Should fix the latest problems, though the QuickCapture bar is temporarily non-functional while I improve it.

One thing has changed.  In the previous betas i had added a feature that would try to find a *CHILD* control region to select as the active area if it would have otherwise selected nothing and the option was enabled to select the active region (see cmpm post above).

That is, the "Auto Select Active Window" option was falling back to selecting an Active CONTROL of the active window if you just grabbed the active window.. I've changed this now to be an option, disabled by default, which you will find in the "Window Capturing 1" tab.  So if you liked that new feature, you can go enable it from there.

The only time that would really be useful is if you want to automatically select specific sub-regions of windows for performing effects on them (like making them glow, etc.).

Screenshot Captor / Re: fancy border question, not urgent

Yep, what Tomos said -- Shadow Effect, which you can also find in SpeciaFx menu.

And also, the fade out effect on edges of screenshots can also be added, by using the SpecialFx option to "Splice out strip (DELUXE)" and then choosing the effect, or similarly from Edit menu the "Crop with Border effects" from Edit menu.  These will let you add a fade-out effect or a ragged edge effect.

Note that the order you do shadow and fade-out effect might make a difference in appearance.

Screenshot Captor / Re: feature request: zoom buttons (+, -) - not urgent
« Last post by mouser on February 25, 2013, 09:47 AM »
As tomos says, the quick zoom bar should be a better solution than zoom in and zoom out buttons, i hope.

But the mouse wheel is the quickest way to zoom.

And mouse wheel alone should zoom in main SC window, regardless of size of image in relation to viewing area.. maybe an issue with new versions of windows that I'm not seeing? What OS do you have Tomos?

Also note at top are quick labels you can click for AutoFit, 50%, 100%, 200%, and more.

Thanks Ashers, good find!
Will be fixed in next update!

Screenshot Captor has some features designed specifically for this kind of use (especially the new beta version, which allows you to configure your own favorite "size presets" for use in resizing and thumbnailing options).

The thumbnail feature is your friend.

So my suggestion is to capture a larger region (either do a whole screen capture and then crop or do a selected region), and then use the Thumbnail feature of SC to get it to the exact size you want using a resizing-filter that makes it look the sharpest.

Use the "File -> Create Thumbnail" menu to bring up the thumbnailer options form and experiment:
thumbnailer.png

Once you get the thumbnail options to look the best and the right size, in the future all you have to do is push the Thumbnail button on the toolbar to apply them to a new image.

Let me know how it works out for you.
9965
it's a big deal -- it could have caused some serious confusion and i'm very glad you reported the bug before an official non-beta release.  thank you.

i just wasnt thinking about captions when i added that option..

i may still leave the option in there for speed tweakers but i clearly need to not make that option enabled by default and put a big warning on it.
9966
Ok I was able to reproduce the problem..   No need to send me anything.  Thank you for your persistence.  Working on it now.

I'm going to have to fix this in SC, but for now you can test the following which should solve the problem:

Go to options, and the "Image File Format" tab, and in the group box marked "Background Transparency", *UNCHECK* the box marked "Faster saving of objects by assuming opaque canvas behind them".
9967
Can you email me the file that is saved and which does not show the caption in photo gallery? ([email protected])
9968
no, you do not want to flatten.

all i want to know is if you can reliably reproduce the steps to cause this bug, and if so can you tell me exact steps to reproduce.
im not trying to figure out a way for you to avoid the bug - i'm trying to understand how i can reproduce what's happening to you so i can figure out what's causing the problem.
9969
can you re-create the problem again with new screenshots?
9970
That's troubling :(

Can you reproduce the problem?

Did you happen to use the toolbar button to "launch image in graphic editor?"
9971
After saving the image with a caption,
and opening the screenshot in another viewer,
the text does not show in the caption.

It's really important to me if you can reproduce this problem and figure out the details of why its happening.

Now one important thing if you really have a file which shows the text in one viewer but not in another, then it may be that its a TRANSPARENT background and black text, so you cant see it in your viewer.

But I need to know if it's a real bug.

So.. if you can find such a file, please attach it to a post in a reply or email it to me ([email protected]) so i can examine.
9972
Might it be useful to have an option to change the captured file name to whatever is the caption?

Might be nice to have an option for that.. something like "use initial X characters of custom comment as filename"..
9973
I uploaded a new beta that has preliminary support for this -- it's not perfect but it's good enough for us to see if we like it.
Currently there are no options for what to do with a custom caption -- it will ALWAYS be added to the comment field AND added as an explicit caption object to the image (and included in any printed caption that would have printed by default).

Let me know what you think.

I plan to have an option to let you customize whether to just add it to image comment field and not add an explicit caption object.
9974
Neat idea.

Having a way to quick-add a caption from this form is intriguing.. One could imagine adding a caption, or adding "comments" (the notes at bottom of main screen embedded into images), or a combo.. only question is whether there is a clean simple way to do it..

I could add a one line edit box with an option somewhere else about what to do with this text if the user provides it; options being "add it to image comments" or "add a caption with this text".
9975
The hardest part about this is that different people have different needs -- no way to please everyone.

But i'm trying to think who would be using the post-capture dialog most often, and i think hardcore SC users are not likely to be using it.. Therefore I'm trying to focus on providing the most common easy to understand features for casual users, and have it serve as a good gentle first introduction to the program.

I think having the Clipboard items as a menu made sense because there are now 3 options there instead of two, and made no sense to have 3 buttons.

The help menu is more like a "More.." menu, and i may rename it to that and put other things in it.  Right now there is Help file, Link to forum, link to open Options dialog.
