General Software Discussion / Re: Another 'Lifetime' license bites the dust
« Last post by wraith808 on April 16, 2009, 02:34 PM »
Slysoft should have created a new product AnyHD that cannot do DVD at all, and then package with every license of AnyHD a free license to AnyDVD so that its users can do DVDs as well.

Why should a user of AnyHD have to suffer for the sake of mindset?  Suffer how you ask?  To have to open separate applications just so people's 'mindset' would be in a certain way.  It's sort of like regular versions vs pro versions- the pro version has more features than the regular version, but both are built into the same application.  What's wrong with that?

It is not a "separate app"; it simply adds the ability to strip the copy protection from HD-DVD and BRD. People open the exact same application that they always have. It just has more capabilities.

Slysoft was the first to break the copy protection for the HD-DVD and BRD, and then when a newer, supposedly better copy protection was introduced, Slysoft broke it again. Don't you think they deserve to earn a little more revenue for that?

I'm not disagreeing with you, I'm disagreeing with the quoted user.  They stated that there should have been an AnyHD product that didn't include the ability to do DVDs, and my thoughts followed from that...  Look at the quote below and you can see what he says about that stance, and my response defending the action...

Why should a user of AnyHD have to suffer for the sake of mindset?  Suffer how you ask?  To have to open separate applications just so people's 'mindset' would be in a certain way.

Because Slysoft screwed up, that's why.

How did they screw up?  Several companies have released a Pro version of the product after the original version, and haven't gotten any bad press about it, especially if they offer a reduced cost upgrade path to the Pro version.  The only 'screw up' I can see is not naming it something other than AnyHD- perhaps AnyDVD Pro or something would have absolved them?  But why?

^ Totally agreed.   I think people freaked out at the online bit, the interface, or one of the many changes, and didn't take the time to evaluate the product as an evolution rather than an incremental change so missed out.

No, it's stored locally then synced.  If you don't want it to sync, then don't put in the password.

It's not web only... I use the desktop app, and love that everything is synced up between my work, home, iPhone, and web...

But that should be the *artist's* choice.  Just because I wouldn't have spent the money or used the software or watched the movie doesn't remove my culpability in stealing someone's art.  If you don't agree to the system, then boycott it and let your money and words inspire change.

I've been playing with it too, and I might pick it up for $15 bucks.  To me, at least, it doesn't have any features to make it stand out from the crowd, but I'm a sucker for cheap software that does what it does well.

I wasn't patient enough for the game.  It was fun, but you *really* have to be into platform/puzzlers and I'm not. :(

Both machines are probably on the same WAN IP, though? That's not the case with p3lb0x and I :)

Not always.  I've knocked my desktop off of steam from all over the country. (or at least Boston, RI, and CA :))

No, that's not the reason.  I have steam installed on my desktop and laptop, and log myself out by logging in on the other one all the time- it never forgets my password though.

As for the general topic of buying games online, I prefer it to traditional physical box retail sales. I use Steam, Direct2Drive, Impulse, and GOG.

I do also.  I haven't bought from GoG yet, but I do plan to support it.  Steam is my most used platform, followed by Direct2Drive (which I actually like a bit better since you get actual game files that you download, though Steam is more convenient).  I use Impulse only when I have to.  It's a bit too much for a gaming platform IMO, and I prefer the minimalistic approach of the others vs Impulse's bloated client.

A co-worker of mine just had an enlightening talk with a recruiter.  She said that because of the deluge of interest in positions, most hiring today is being done through networking and internally rather than on job sites.  She also stated that Linked In was your best friend- get in touch with people whom you worked with in the past as they could be a critical key in securing a position that was not posted in any other way.

I'm praying that my contract gets renewed at the end of June, but I've not stopped looking in other places, so this piece of advice was like gold.

Robobasket.  I purchased it on BDJ for 9.95.  I haven't really used it yet, but maybe it will help you.  Normal price is 19.95.

There is a service for this- I can't remember offhand what the url is, but I ran across it in my research about a business idea that I was working on.  I did a search and came up with this one that I hadn't seen before.  https://www.legacylocker.com/

While complaining about Steam, why is it that buying the physical and presumably more costly boxed game in a local store is easily about half the price you'd pay online?

This whole Steam business is the biggest swindle being forced on us by capitalists in a long time. There is no competition so games are being 'rented' to us at prices far in excess of anything we were paying before.

To me it's a big convenience, and actually on most games it's not double the price of buying in stores, but about the same amount, and games are not rented to you... you can back them up locally and play them offline if you want.

But the conveniences:
  • Gets rid of the clutter of physical boxes
  • Don't have to insert the DVD/CD to play
  • Can re-download any time- no more losing games
  • Can preload the game and play on the launch day rather than going into the store

As far as the OT, I've had to deal with steam support twice, and both times were less than satisfactory.  One was on recovering my password, and they wanted the key from the CD I had installed Half Life with to restore, and that was long gone... I think they've changed their policies since then on password retrieval.  The other was with an offer that they still had advertised and I actually had in my cart that wouldn't check out- because of their long turnaround time, by the time they got back to me, the offer was no longer valid and they wouldn't do anything about it.

Partially, but not totally true.

The fee is $100 (standard) or $300 (enterprise) to become a (SDK) developer.  The Standard Developer can distribute apps to the AppStore; the Enterprise Developer can distribute without the App Store (for Enterprise level applications for in-house users).  The important thing that it allows you to do other than this is to compile SDK Apps directly to your iPhone.  This is important because features like altitude detection, volume control, and the accelerometer don’t work correctly when tested in the iPhone Simulator.

From iPhone in Action (a book that I'd recommend)
There are two ways you can develop for the iPhone. One approach is to write web pages for mobile Safari, using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and your favorite dynamic language. The other is to write native applications to run directly on the iPhone, using Objective-C and the iPhone SDK.
We strongly believe that each programming method has its own place, and that you should always ensure you’re using the correct one before you get started with any iPhone project.

Of course web pages don't need to be distributed, so that's a big advantage in money and (possibly) audience.  It really depends on what you're planning to develop in the end.

HTH!

Hmm... Interesting.  Not something I'd get at normal price, though.  For the stuff I do, that price is overkill.  But I'll keep an eye out for more deals, especially if mouser recommends it. :)

I'm on there a lot as wraith808 also.  Very lively community, and I've been introduced to a lot of board games.  I've also sold on the marketplace, and it is a very good place to sell, though not as well traveled as eBay of course.

Why post about your product in a compliment to another developer instead of making your own thread in Announce Your Software/Product.  Bad form, IMO.

What I mainly use DA for is to launch applications and websites with quick combinations of keys, i.e. `out launches outlook.  I know it has other functions, but I've never gotten into them, and was wondering if ME had a better interface to process things other than launching applications/websites.

I think it could be used to generate leads, but in general, I just go with headhunters.  I'm trying to build up my hosting presence, so from that perspective if there are small business owners, it could help.  But I've really not followed up and relied on word of mouth for clients.  So I don't think it's a function of the site, but more that I haven't used to resources for networking as it could be.
