People, people, people!!!

Superboy is right!

Anathema is anathema! :P

Yes, I see...

To superboyac the word anathema is an abomination, an outrage, an abhorrence, a disgrace, an evil, a bane, a bugbear, a bĂȘte noire. It is something that he vehemently dislikes.

It is... Aw hell I really don't have to explain where this is going do I?!?
you know...i didn't even realize the pun i was making!

I just can't stand that word.  From the first time I heard it and all the years since.  Whenever it is used, it always sounds like something wrong just happened in grammer.  It sounds like you are saying "an athema".  And no matter what context you use it in, as soon as it is said, the listeners can only think about this awkward word and it's a complete distraction.  I may remove it from my vocabulary forever.

awesome.
but the thumbs ups here are making me nauseous.

I also think that there must be some kind of unwanted baggage there, as Shades said.  If so, I'd like to know what that is.
982
I think the cost for making apps is only on the back end, similar to the App Store, i.e. if I make a free app, it doesn't cost anything.  At least from my limited look at the development side, this seemed to be the case.  In fact, if I make a free app, then I have a chance of getting free stuff from MS.  So only if the app would be a pay app would MS get anything... just like the App store.  And instagram doesn't cost anything from what I know.
This is what I don't get about these big software companies.  If what you say is true, then why didn't Instagram make an app several months ago?  Just assign one of their programmers and get it done in a week, it wouldn't take much.  So there must be more to the story.  There's gotta be some politics or something.  The way I see it, there seems to be a deliberate reason NOT to do it, because doing it would be so easy and logical.  So what is that reason?

When I ask questions like this, a lot of people say, well, when there's more of a demand, they'll do it.  But that doesn't make sense to me for Instagram or large companies like that.  I can see a team of 2-3 people waiting, but not a huge app like that.
983
So you're saying...
If Instagram wants to make an app for the windows phone, MS is going to make THEM (Instagram) pay for that?  Maybe this explains why there aren't many apps.
984
I find this very interesting from a business analysis perspective.
Windows Phone 8 has been out for nearly a year.  One major complaint has been there are no apps.  yes, the app store has thousands of apps.  but 99.9% of them either don't work, are buggy, are for WP 7, etc.  So really, there are no apps.  What's worse is that a lot of major apps, like Instagram, never came.  But now it is here, or will be in a few days.  I find it a remarkable coincidence that this happens the exact same time Instagram will implement ads for the first time.

So what's going on behind the scenes here?  let me know.  What is the real reason why the major apps have not implemented anything for WP8?  It for sure can't be because they don't have the resources.

I'm still peeved that the two best mp3 catalging programs are both now discontinued...MP3Rat and Mp3 Collector.

Living Room / Re: Recommend some music videos to me!
« Last post by superboyac on October 28, 2013, 01:28 PM »
This is a fun one. WoW's composer Jason Hayes has put together a group of talented professional musicians who will be arranging and performing music from famous computer games. The group is called Critical Hit - and this is their first video, the theme to Angry Birds.

I'm glad they're doing this for two reasons:

1. There is some really great music lurking in many old and new computer games that would sound fantastic if played on something better than a sound chip. Deathgate, M.U.L.E., Elite and a bunch of other games too numerous to list would all be ideal sources for some great musical arrangements.

2. This sort of music is fun to play if you're a musician. Tricky time and key changes, the opportunity to incorporate and show off some unorthodox playing techniques and special effects, and (above all) catchy melodies? Gadzooks! - most musicians I know would be lining up in droves for the chance to audition for this sort of ensemble. Music should be enjoyable to play and listen to. Something far too many composers seem to have trouble understanding.

That was so @#$%-ing good.

Living Room / Re: World's fastest WiFi @100Gbps
« Last post by superboyac on October 24, 2013, 04:35 PM »
How long until these speeds reach the consumer world?  What are we, like 20 years behind for that to happen?  I just want to know so I won't get too excited.  My favorite technology in the world is storage and related speed things.

I've already ranted several times over the past decade at how disappointed I've been that all of these post USB 2.0 technologies take forever, or never, to start hitting the real shelves.  esata never really took off.  USB 3.0 hasn't taken off at all really.  A lot of laptops come with the ports, some portable hard drives have the connection, some usb sticks if you really go out of your way to get them (and they underwhelm with speed normally).  Thunderbolt has nothing going on.

Also, what kind of technologies can even take advantage of these kinds of speeds?  100 Gbps??  You would need like RAID25 for something like that!  Maybe some pure flash/SSD setups can use this?  Maybe video streaming like I've been playing with lately?  I don't know.

And what's the future of hard drive storage?  Are we getting past the 4TB limit?  Are blurays affordable yet for storage purposes?  Like a few bucks per disc?  How big are SSD's going to get anytime soon?  1TB?

This has a couple of interesting points for me.  First, this is one of the first softwares I ever purchased well over a decade ago.

But what's interesting is that collectorz hasn't been active, like, at all for the past several years.  So there's a catch 22...i heard it wasn't active because it wasn't bringing in enough business.  But what has changed?  Just that the owner decided to use a subscription model?  That's what's weird.  After so little activity, he's going to try to reinvigorate the market with this.  OK, we'll see.  I just feel it's a bit of a dying market.  But the software was really great, I thought, I'm still a big fan.

Living Room / Re: Capture Card: my experience and unanswered questions
« Last post by superboyac on October 20, 2013, 11:27 PM »
I can't get the setup yet where audio and video is synced, that's been the challenge.

I assume the camera is plugged into one of the HDMI inputs, does the camera output audio over HDMI also ?
Or are you using the 3.5mm audio input ?

And with the sync problems you've had, is that with a capture or streaming, (ie. input or output) ?
The sync is because I'm bringing the video through the hdmi cable, but the audio is coming straight from the computer.  If I were to use the audio from the hdmi cable, there would be no problem.  But I need the audio from my computer (which is all set up like a music studio), not the shitty mics on the camcorder.

Anyway, I've been looking more into this, and it's really a problem of this: most of this type of stuff is only done by pros, so it's an equipment issue.  For example, I found out that the professional type of cable to use for this sort of thing is an HD-SDI cable.  Only professional cameras (aka expensive) use this cable.  So I would need at least a $2000 camera.

Next is what this cable does.  Speed, basically.  It can send video feeds at a speed of about 3 Gbps (375 MB/s).  Now this means the hard drives need to be able to write at these speeds, which is really fast.  They need to be RAIDed.  RAID5 or something.  SO there's another headache.

Now also consider that you need a LOT of hard drive space if you plan on taking a lot of hours of video.  These raw feeds can be 6-10 GB per HOUR.  So a current large drive (4 TB) can hold perhaps 400 hours of footage.  And with the drives RAIDed (which means you need several physical hard drives to account for one drive of actual storage) that means that you need to get 3-4 4TB hard drives for every 17 days of continuous recording.  That's not much, i don't think.  And that's pretty expensive: every time you "fill up" you need to spend maybe $1000 for more storage.  $1000 for half a month of continuous footage.

So, I don't know...what my conclusion is.  But whatever.

Yes exactly, sorry.  I've been playing with it all day.  I can't get the setup yet where audio and video is synced, that's been the challenge.

Thanks 4wd!  yes, you are correct it seems.  The onboard encoder takes away the need for the huge bandwidth.  So after learning that, I found this software: Open Broadcasting System.  It's free and awesome!  So I can now do what I've been really wanting: stream the 1080p stream to one of my computer monitors.  Also, the software takes care of the output stream to wherever (online, in my case).  So it converts the live local stream to whatever needs to happen for a normal online viewing experience.  meaning, someone like me will not be streaming a pure 1080p output online since my upload speeds couldn't handle it.  But I can stream 480p.  But I don't want the local stream to be affected, I still want to see 1080p on my monitors.

This means:
--I can have a live musical performance.
--I can stream the live performance in 480p online
--I can record the live performance in 1080p.

Lovely.

Living Room / Capture Card: my experience and unanswered questions
« Last post by superboyac on October 18, 2013, 08:15 PM »
So I finally got a capture card, the Avermedia Live Gamer HD.  Most people use these to record their screens while they play games.  I'm trying to use it with my panasonic camcorder to record musical performances at my place.  More importantly, I want to live stream to websites.

Here's the problem I just realized...this card doesn't really work without it's proprietary software (RECentral) that comes with it.  I was expecting to install the card and drivers, and be able to use it with any third-party software.  But none of the third party softwares I've tried can detect or access the camera.  It's very annoying...like buying a sound card that can only play music from it's own software.

The other thing is that if I do want to stream, the REcentral software has an area where i have to choose the streaming service, and there are only three options (twitchtv, xsplit, something else).  What if I want to use another service??  I mean, this is too restricted for me.  I just wanted a general capture device.  I mean, my logitech webcam works with everything...although in 1080 mode it only works with the logitech software.  this must be a resource issue.

So I don't know what to do.  I got this card because it can handle 1080p with 60fps, which my camera can do.  But if it is restricted like this, it's very annoying.

Looking into it some more, other more professional cards recommend being able to write at 500 MB/s, which probably requires a computer set up with RAID hard drives or SSDs (which I don't have).  So maybe I'm in over my head with my previous expectations.  But now I'm trying to understand if it is possible with my current setup.

Do I just need to record at lower resolutions/framerates?
DO I need a different card with general drivers and not proprietary software?
Do I need to setup a RAID system?

^4. Do all of the user accounts used have passwords? (blank passwords cause a silent fail for share connections after XP SP2)
Oh!  This is interesting.  I think I use blank passwords for one of the machines.  Maybe that's the problem.

General Software Discussion / Best way to embed a live chat on a webpage?
« Last post by superboyac on October 17, 2013, 04:01 PM »
I'm looking for really nice, convenient ways (for the end-user) to embed a live chat inside a webpage.  Let's say the page has two parts, like frames...one frame is showing a live video stream, and the other frame is a live chat.  What's a good way to do that?

Ideally, people would be able to participate in the chat with their desktop/laptop, but also mobile devices (apple, android).  Minimal/none of the annoyances of registration, logins, etc.

Can't speak for all but I've noticed a recent tendency on my machines for flv to lockup or misload in Firefox (under Linux) when watching YouTube vids - sometimes to the point where the only alternative was to download the vid and watch it with VLC.

But I suspect thats likely more a YT or FF issue.

Other than that, Flash videos seem to work just fine.

I think in my case I'm noticing it most of the time with ESPN and youtube.
999
Lately, roughly about the last year or so, flash is crashing all the time.  firefox, chrome, doesn't matter.  At least multiple times a day for me.  All different computers...work, home, laptop, etc.  ESPN...like every day I think.

Hmmm...one minor complication...I need a Windows Server flavored OS to create a domain.  So I need to make a new machine?  Or run one on a VM?
