General Software Discussion / Opera to support extensions in V11
« Last post by Josh on October 14, 2010, 03:03 PM »
Opera Software, known for its popular mobile browser announced today that its desktop web browser will receive extension support in the up and coming version, Opera 11.

At the Up North Web press conference today, situated in Opera’s hometown of Oslo, Norway, Lars Boilesen, CEO of Opera announced new ideas which he believes will be the “future of the web”.

In a blog post on MyOpera information about the extension support was posted. The extensions will be based on the W3C widget specifications, considered to be an Open Standard effort, and developers will be able to create them using HTML5, CSS and JavaScript with support for APIs. Opera admitted the extensions coming, will be similar to extensions in browsers such as Google Chrome and Firefox. If you’re a developer and are interested in developing extensions for Opera, it was also announced that once the Opera 11 Alpha is released, the needed information to develop and publish extensions will be posted on Opera’s Developer page.

Are they too little too late? I guess they finally realized you cannot escape the fact that people WANT extensions.

And everything you do is, of course, collected on their central database.

« Last post by Josh on October 01, 2010, 10:19 AM »
Again, not to sound cold because that is not my intent, is that my concern when I go out to eat? If I worried about everyone who was being underpaid, I would tip the people at walmart who ring up my merchandise who make nothing, work 40+ hours per week, and receive no real set of benefits, I would tip the people at mcdonalds working drive thru, I would tip the person working the gas station, etc. I go to a restaurant to eat, not worry about the employment decision made by an individual. At what point do I stop worrying about everyone else and start worrying more about my family and my own obligations?

Again, I am not trying to sound cold, but I take this viewpoint from a realist standpoint and realize that I cannot affect everyone's pay without affecting those whom I have a direct responsibility for (My family). I am not going to tip someone an arbitrary amount set by tradition because it is the normal thing to do. I am going to tip you if I feel you earned it and even then I will tip the amount I feel you earned, not some arbitrary percentage.

That is part of my logic. The cost of the food, whether this is actually the case or not, should cover the service the waiter is providing. If I tip, it should be EXTRA and not an expected part of their income. Why am I going to tip you 15% of a 60 dollar check for 4 interactions (Intro/Drink order placement, drop off drinks and take food order, drop off food and see if anything else is needed, and checking if we want desert/dropping off check) with the occasional extra drink refill? What did they do that warrants $9, in the case of a 60 dollar check, extra? Why should I leave you 15% extra from my check? What, because it is considered "customary"? Sorry, I will tip you when I feel it is warranted and you did something to earn the extra money. I will not tip because it's the "expected" thing to do.

I will buy my daughter a REGULAR cell phone. I do not care what her friends say. When she is working and can pay for the data plan, which I guarantee in 10 years will cost the same as it does now, and the added cost of having the device, she can have one.

Living Room / Where have all the trackballs gone!
« Last post by Josh on September 22, 2010, 07:51 PM »
This is a fairly straight forward question. I am a huge fan of trackballs as pointing devices and I am disappointed by the sheer lack of trackballs available. My wife has been converted after using my old Microsoft Trackball Explorer a while back. Now, I have a Logitech marble mouse which is OK, but it lacks the scroll wheel and the buttons are oddly placed causing some issues using the back/forward buttons.

That said, Logitech has a new trackball available for pre-order which has stuff in logical places. I, for one, cannot wait for this device!

General Software Discussion / Re: MeediOS: A promising HTPC frontend.

I have no idea. People have been complaining about that since WXP MCE 2005. There is no way to disable it and the permissions settings displayed on many google search results have hit or miss results. In fact, those permissions can screw up many systems and configurations.

I am also looking for a front end for a media center PC I have. WMC would be great but it gives the option at the end of playback to DELETE the file with no way to disable it. Why this would be added after playback by default is beyond me, but anyways. I am looking for a front-end which supports hulu.

This bug ties right into my complaints about betanews.

You can customize shortcut keys in 2010. Right click ribbon, customize the ribbon.

Click where I show you in the attached photo.

Also remember that 2010 was finishing up the implementation of the ribbon which MS started in 2007. I love the 2010 ribbon!

HOLY NECRO-REVIVAL BATMAN!

IE9 now scores 95/100 on Acid3, better than firefox 3.6.
995
Also forgot to mention the poor excuse for a rating system. The system is broken beyond any chance of repair. Users can rate down with no requirement for justification. This often results in all comments being "below viewing threshold" whenever you view a topic because someone holds a grudge against another user or set of users.

General Software Discussion / Betanews.com - What was once a great site, is no longer
« Last post by Josh on September 18, 2010, 09:51 AM »
I hope that I am not the only person on DC with the below feelings, but they had to be said.

Betanews, and likewise fileforum, have lost their way. The site which was once designed around providing updates to the latest in beta technology and software has turned into a commercial shill with a focus on dragging in more advertising dollars. Many of the "journalists" seem to be more like bloggers with stories which are designed to do nothing more than stir up a flame war. I've watched as their site has been overrun with advertisements. I have not seen any of those as I block all ads but turning off the ad blocker leads to stuff like "Software deal of the day", a recent addition to try and earn some money from their bigger advertisers, interstitial ads which interrupt me as I navigate page-to-page, an absurd amount of "top stories" or "most commented" sections which do nothing more than take up space. Their special features section has not changed in forever. One of the stories listed in it was from May. Is the release of nitro pdf's free reader still a "featured story" with so much other tech news going on?

The site is overrun with spam. You cannot rely on the "number of comments" section due to the fact that it may say 104 posts, but clicking the link reveals only 12 actual posts with the rest either hidden, identified spam, or actual spam in the comments/reviews. The site is overrun with the same people who "review" ad nauseam the same programs and do nothing but attack each other. I watch as one user incessantly rants about some obscure form of value, relying solely on price and providing no information on the actual program or its functionality. I watch as others review programs with no actual content but merely attacking other users. The articles posted at times read like paid advertisements.

Sorry if this seems like just a gripe session, but as a user who used betanews back in its good ole days, I am saddened to see the site take such a drastic turn. From spammers, to review/comment trolls, to ungodly numbers of advertisements, the site has turned into one which I am very close to ceasing visitation at minus software update notifications. Even that is being done more and more with secunia PSI and FileHippo update checker.

Come on betanews, get back to your roots. Give us a site worth reading.

Now tipping is comparable to bribing public officials and law enforcement? Oh man, even Mr. Pink didn't go there.

This thread gets better with each post! I almost expect Godwin's Law to come into play soon!   :D

Jim

Why are you so PRO tipping? Honest question.

I am ready for it. Bring it on if it means better pay for the people serving me. I will pay for service at a restaurant. The point of a restaurant is a place to go out to eat and have a good meal without having to work for it. It is a premium. Going out to eat SHOULD NOT BE an every day thing. It should be used for a celebration, a date night for a long time married or dating couple, or some other special occasion. That is the only time, minus chinese food or pizza, that my family and I go out to eat. I am willing to pay the premium for it if it means I get service worth paying for.
