The third book is very interesting but I'm finding it takes a lot

Perhaps you need a second brain to get through the third book?  :P

He he -- good one :)

Ctrl+Shift+T in a browser.

If only this worked with Windows Explorer windows!

WinKey+B for system tray access and navigation via the left/right arrows.

Mmm, convenient

Recently learned about Ctrl+Shift+L in Eclipse (Help > Key Assist...).

Thanks for the feedback.

It seems to be written in C# -- may be if it's easy Renegade can contribute support for obscuring the password field ;)

General Software Discussion / Using Windows 7 as WiFi Access Point Simply
« Last post by ewemoa on March 19, 2013, 09:16 AM »
Was looking for a simple way to do this without much tweaking and came across:

  Virtual Router Plus

In brief testing of version 2.3.0 (via .zip on project site, not .7z available via "other" site), it seemed to work fine.

No installation appears to be necessary and there appears to be WPA/WPA2 support.  One thing that seemed a bit unfortunate was that the password field appears unobscured.

Anyone have experience with this or have some other recommendation?

Proxmox VE.

Looks quite interesting!

A bit of searching turned it up in the following list -- perhaps there is another alternative there for comparison?

  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel-based_Virtual_Machine#Graphical_management_tools

May be the following?

OpenNode - RHEL/CentOS-based open-source server virtualization and management solution with a simple bare-metal installer, providing KVM+OpenVZ host and standard libvirt, func management interfaces together with standard CLI tools like virsh and vzctl.

Perhaps "OpenNode" refers to:

Thanks for the detailed comments :)

That course looks interesting -- it looks like it's taught by the creator of Scala.  The Worksheet does sound neat -- thanks for mentioning it.

I ended up installing IntelliJ on a *nix and am slowly trying it out -- so far it doesn't seem too confusing.  What I'm after at the moment is writing tests for Android apps using RoboSpecs (Specs2 + Robolectric).

Thanks for the comments.

Recently I've been using Eclipse to follow some Android tutorials.  I haven't had that much difficulty with it (except for a strange incident when it stopped recognizing the ADT plugin) but I noticed the author of RoboGuice spoke highly of IntelliJ in a talk so I started looking for comparisons between that and Eclipse.

A brief search seemed to indicate that Eclipse has more (and more up-to-date) plugins and tends to be supported earlier than IntelliJ (if the latter gets support at all).  Core-functionality-wise I got the impression that they aren't all that different from each other with more comments about IntelliJ being less confusing to use than Eclipse (may be it's just a matter of what one is used to...).

On a non-Java note, I'm looking into Scala and noticed that IntelliJ has some kind of support and there's this plugin(?) for Eclipse: http://scala-ide.org/ -- has any one had experience and opinions on the latter?

That's the real problem with getting hacked. It's often difficult or impossible to accurately determine exactly where and how far in they got.

Would it be practical to compare files and directories from backups to see what might have changed?

Looking for an excuse to try it :)

Thanks for the link.

Thought the following bit was worth quoting.

From the article:
Cracking passwords is the most common way to unlock encrypted files, but it isn't the only way. The keys to decrypting your darkest secrets might be floating around in RAM from the last time you opened an encrypted file. Or perhaps, if Windows ran out of physical RAM, they're sitting in your swap file. They could also be hiding in your hibernation file — assuming that you hibernate your PC.

EFDD (or a similar app) searches those areas for possible keys. It then tries any keys it finds on your encrypted files.
Sometimes it works; sometimes it doesn't.

Thanks for the heads up.

On a related note, the PortableApps.com packaging of JRE seemed up-to-date already:

Came across the following SmartGitHg docs:

  Modifying the History

Sections for:

  • Modifying the last commit
  • Merging the last two commits
  • Splitting the last commit into two
  • Modifying older commits
  • Merging and splitting older commits
  • Reordering commits

A brief reading suggests the content may not have been updated for the version 4 series (e.g. no mention of "joining commits").

However, since the current release of version 4 doesn't appear to support the bold-faced sections in as convenient a fashion as the non-bold-faced ones, the docs still seems potentially useful.

Haven't tested the instructions yet so not sure if any of the bold-faced section steps are easier than using interactive rebasing from the command line.

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: FARR plugin: Akete
« Last post by ewemoa on January 19, 2013, 07:58 PM »
Tentatively made a git repository available containing code with various additions, removals, etc.

Changes include:

  • Context menu items for folders
  • Option to use file associations from Q-Dir
  • Option to use file associations from Xenon
  • Statusbar icon with menu in FARR main window
  • Configuration via FARR's web view
  • FScript.dll with some fixes
  • Removal of some features from previous experimental version (sorry, no keyword)

See first post for README.txt.

I'm using the method described here to open the Windows Shutdown dialog from FARR.

Basically, you just have to put a shortcut to a text file called e.g. Shutdown.js with the following line

(new ActiveXObject("Shell.Application")).ShutdownWindows();

somewhere where FARR can find it.

Nice tip

On a side note, it appears to work in Windows 7.

Did my first interactive rebase today -- great stuff

Wanted to see if SmartGit has some nice GUI for it and found:

  http://smartgit.3668570.n2.nabble.com/Interactive-rebasing-td7572897.html

Don't know if there's anything there yet -- have you come across anything?

Based on:

  What's New in SmartGit/Hg 4?

Looks like there is more support for interactive rebasing in version 4.x:

Before pushing, you can cleanup your commits visually (except of merge commits): reorder commits by using drag and drop, join adjacent commits or edit commit messages.

Screenshot:

  http://www.syntevo.com/smartgithg/version-4/pushable-commits-dnd.png

Below are some screenshots:

editing commit messages

joining commits

reordering commits via dragging and dropping

In each case, this was for commits that have not been pushed (anywhere?) yet.

Something like Ctrl+B for Blur would be nice.
-fenixproductions (January 16, 2013, 03:33 AM)

Here the following sequence works:

Alt+X
B
Enter

Perhaps this isn't ideal and you'd already thought of it, but FWIW :)

+1 for this -- after many rounds of hard-to-clean objects, the brain here seems to be more likely to remember to check for this sort of thing :)

Recently I noticed that a number of installed Firefox addons were using a language different from what they used to.  The language I had been expecting was some kind of English, but what was being used was some non-English language.  Investigating a bit, came across:

how can I force addons to be displayed in English?

This sounded similar to the situation here and there didn't seem to be a solution mentioned that didn't involve a fair bit of reinstalling and reconfiguring.

Tried removing addons one by one and eventually discovered that disabling (or removing) a version of the Pencil addon seemed to fix things.

So perhaps selective addon-disabling/removal is a potentially helpful approach...

For the record, had manually installed the seemingly problematic addon via an .xpi, so perhaps I had that coming as (at the moment anyway) there doesn't appear to be a version compatible with the version of FF here:

Not available for Firefox 18.0
