Screenshot Captor / Re: "Incorrect" filename for "Grab selected region"
« Last post by mouser on March 28, 2013, 11:21 AM »
I'm on xp pro still.. Just got a confirmation from other user on win7 about this issue.. i think it's getting confused about the active window when doing aero transparency capture attempt.  I will try to hunt it down.

When I do that it labels mine correctly as from the command prompt not notepad.. What operating system are you using?
Anyone else see this behavior?  Can you experiment a bit more and see if it's related to some setting?
I wonder if it's getting confused while trying to do background removal on win vista/7?

Hi sba,

Can you give me more details -- and maybe some screenshots?

The only time SC should have to "guess" at the window to use is if its a region capture or if there was no window active at time of initiation of the capture.  But if you are performing an Active Window Capture of the foreground window, it should be grabbing it properly.

Thanks folks!

One thing I'd like to ask people who use and like Screenshot Captor, is if you see it on a software listing site or on a review without recent user comments -- please consider adding a comment/review and letting people know it's a good program.  It helps to let readers know that there are people who like it and it's sad when i see a listing for SC without a user comment in years.

Nice write-up of the new release by BetaNews writer Nick Peers, who clearly took the time to read about the new features:

I should probably remove the old and beta download links from this thread, they may be confusing.. Keep in mind that the latest official release is the most recent.

Wecome to the site Fishous, beautiful setup you have there.

Right you are -- thanks for the suggestion I will change from desktopcenter default to screencenter.

« Last post by mouser on March 27, 2013, 08:49 AM »
Ah.. so you mean to do a SELECTED REGION (using crosshairs to select region at time of capture) capture, with the menu showing.. Indeed if you're dead set on not just capturing screen and capturing after the fact (which is always my recommendation), then a delay is what you have to use.

What kind of capture are you triggering? An "Active Window" capture?

You say "I suppose I could always do a full screen PrtScr key and then edit, but that seems to be MORE work, not less." so I know its not a full screen capture..

But let's step back and address what you're really trying to do:

If capturing the ACTIVE window with menu showing is what you want to do, the problem is the ALT key, which is by default tied to the active window capture..  If you simply reconfigure Ctrl+PrtScr to perform an active window capture, it shouldn't close up your menu.

Now if you want to capture JUST the menu, then you can use SC's object-capture mode.

So rather than get hung up on delay settings -- let's see if we can't help you do what you want to do in the most efficient way..

I was thinking we might need a thread to unravel some of the avatar mysteries of users on the forum..

The avatar that inspired this post was this one from DC forum member Gothi[c] who helps out with DonationCoder.com server administration:

Can anyone decode the secret message?

By the way -- there are occasionally times when I might have used a delay option to capture some unusual things that didn't react well to hotkeys being pressed -- but now for that I use my new Easy Screencast Recorder tool interfaced with Screenshot Captor -- that lets me capture a continuous video for the period and then extract the frames I need.  Takes a bit more time to set up since you'll want to install a lossless codec for best quality, but it does work very well and saves the hassle of trying to get the capture timing just right.

I almost removed the delay capture stuff from the menus completely -- it's getting harder for me to imagine a case when you really need a delayed capture -- can you explain why you might need to use that so i can better understand the usage scenarios?

regarding the dashed lines when doing a selection capture -- there is no option to make them bigger, though there is an options tab for them (See "Selection Capture Options" tab), so I could add such a thing..

Screenshot Captor / Re: Error Message box hidden behind options window
« Last post by mouser on March 27, 2013, 04:24 AM »
Thanks for the report, tg, i will fix.

Quick general trick/tip: If you ever have a case where a modal foreground window won't turn active when you click on it and just beeps when you do -- it may be that it is in front of an error message box that has the focus, but cannot be clicked on.  In such a case one trick solution is just press the Escape key to close the error message box.

Ghacks has a nice writeup of SC4:

Terrific.

Note that even if you don't want to use this tool as *the* "uploader" tool, you can still configure it in same exact way as an item in the tool menu.

(Maybe someone wants to make a self package with compiled binaries and an .sctool so it can just be downloaded and added to SC tools folder and is ready for use?)

Screenshot Captor / Re: SC 4 update minor problem
« Last post by mouser on March 26, 2013, 02:42 PM »
well the panic is/was warranted.. i just hope the cause of the panic was a faulty older beta which did not save it's settings properly when you ran the upgrade.  there's a good chance of that since some of the last betas had a flaw in saving settings on reboot or upgrade.  if i'm right then that will at least limit the # of people who could potentially be hit by this to a very small number.

Somehow your ScreenshotCaptor.ini file got messed up -- quite possibly a bug in an older beta that kicked in when you ran the new installed and it killed the running instance of the older beta.

I've uploaded a new version of 4.0 that has an additional protection against the possibility of corruption occurring if it crashes while saving settings; if you downloaded 4.0 earlier than 2:30pm central (forum) time, you might want to re-download.

Am using Agent Ransack which is good at what it does but I need something that also indexes file contents for quick later retrieval.

FARR does *not* index files let alone their contents, so you're not going to find it useful for that purpose.

Hi Unreadable, and welcome to the site.
Sorry for delay in replying -- i've been busy working on another update to another program.

The font should NOT look like that, but I know the cause has to do with your windows desktop being set to "large fonts" which the program is trying to compensate for.  Large font settings create all kind of havok, but it still shouldn't look so bad.

If you give me a few days I will try to have a new version to test that may help.

Thanks very much bob -- I couldn't have done it without you and the other beta testers -- and app103 and hamradio especially.

Newsletter for March 26, 2013
"Codename: Major Updates!"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings readers, and welcome to another edition of the DonationCoder newsletter.

March is typically the month we hold our annual fundraiser -- so normally in this newsletter I would be asking you to visit the site and make a donation to support us.  However, while the site has been busy in the last year -- with our regular big NANY (New Apps for the New Year) programming event held in January, and a major new release of one of our more popular applications (more about that in a minute) -- it just didn't feel right asking for your support while we haven't made more progress on the long planned upgrade of the website.  Let's hope we have a reason to celebrate that next year.

But I do have something I want to ask for your help with.

The sending of this newsletter coincides with a major new release, version 4, of my program, Screenshot Captor, and the new release is filled with tons of new features.  If you haven't tried it yet, now would be a perfect time to do so (big thank yous to DC member Carroll D. (hamradio) for creating a ton of beautiful new icons for the program, and app103, for creating a bunch of great new clipart which is included with the program).

Screenshot Captor has consistently been one of the more popular and well-reviewed programs on the website.  It's also the program that I most frequently receive commercial-site-license inquiries about.  The policy here at DonationCoder has always been that our software is free for personal use (and free for individuals using for work), but that we ask larger companies to purchase commercial site licenses.  And while we've sold commercial site licenses is the past, we've never done a good job of explaining our commercial site licensing policies or had a dedicated page explaining them.

That is now changing.  I've created a dedicated commercial site license landing page complete with prices for high-volume site licenses, and a description of the benefits of choosing DonationCoder software for commercial business use. I'm requesting your help in spreading the word about our new commercial site-licenses.  If you know a medium or large organization that you think would be interested in purchasing a commercial site-license for any of our software programs, or might be interested in hiring us for custom development, please point them to our commercial site license page.

In addition to the major Screenshot Captor update, I've also released a new major version of my Multi Photo Quotes screensaver, which is now capable of extracting and displaying random frames and subtitles from video files (perfect for movie buffs or home videographers), a medium sized update to my popular URL Snooper application, and minor update to my Desktop Coral and Easy Screencast Recorder tools.  Details below.
