You can us e fileBox eXtender.
That should fill the need.

http://www.hyperioni....com/files/index.asp

can filebox extender add links for programmes ? (how? :)*)
or do you mean to simply add the folder to the list and then select the exe file :-\

* had a look at their webpage and didnt see anything..

As for disk imaging software - I already do have it.  But as I think this OS was already crapped out when I got the machine, I can't see mounting an image that is most like bad itself.

better luck with the new install  hopefully

Living Room / Re: Fujitsu Scansnap S300 - Looks Nice; Anyone Using One?
« Last post by tomos on April 21, 2008, 06:57 AM »
should point out the 300 may not be as fast as the others commented on?
I've no personal experience but there's a comparative review of docu-scanners including the S300 in c't (german language) magazine last month - I like their reviews - they're more like user reports
In terms of speed it gets a "satisfactory", less than most of the others, but then they mostly double the cost.

"Good" for OCR quality (included software is Abbyy FineReader 7.x)
"Poor" for graphics and for "Noise measurements"
and commented:-
generally "delivers good results"
from what they say, probably wouldnt be suited to heavy-duty office work but you're probably okay that way :)

EDIT: doesnt seem that the SFSS partial sync can work in my setup since it seems to require something installed in the remote computer and i just have 2 drives from one computer, one usb the other over the network

off the top of my head - (you do mean the partial file update thingy?)
it works between my pc & my usb stick (with nothing special on it), but it only works for very big files -
sorry, offhand I dont know what size...

actually loooking at the website, he doesnt say, kindof silly really
http://www.superflexible.com/partial.htm

It works for me with a 200MB surfulater file but that doesnt help you any :(

all off-topic response to Deozaan  :-\
I did specifically mention dialects of English that don't pronounce the letter H at the beginning of words. I would say "An HTML editor." Sure, you say the letter "H" but it starts with the sound of the letter "A."

yes, yes, I was agreeing with you :) and commenting y bit more
btw
you say the letter "H" but it starts with the sound of the letter "A
that was omy point - I dont pronounce "H" starting with the letter "A" (I pronounce it like "hay" -I think we pronounce that similar..) - which is why i say "a html editor"
we'll have to start uploading recordings next ;D and apologies to others for keeping thread very off topic :-[

first partition on second drive - (f0dder says you dont need one if you have 2GB ram tongue)
I have the Temp folders there and Temp Internet files too. Just nice to have the messy stuff all in one package!

Now I'm wondering if I should have the swap file in the first (small) partition of the second drive, and all the temp and other messy stuff in another partition on the second drive.

I have them all in the one partition - I dont think it makes much of a difference seeing as you probably make page file fixed size... (make that first then transfer temp folders etc)
9637
By the way if you want to put all the temp files with PageFile.sys in the first partition on drive 2 I suggest you use a fixed size page file.

How big?
normally 1.5 times memory = e.g. 3GB if you have 2GB ram

<@mouser> if it happens again im gone

<@mouser> when it happened i ran into the living room and my cat ran in from another direction too
<@mouser> we both looked at each other like
<@mouser> wtf!

<p3lb0x> So your packing up your stuff and huddling off to the nearest cyber café?

I have onenote and surfulator to replace evernote, pity to see something so good at what it did change, i havent decided which to use yet, they both seem pretty good.  Probably onenote just edges out surfulator but  mainly its just the finish of the product.  Thought I'd change now before I had too much stuff in evernote.
apparently tagging is in beta in Surfulater, I'll be happy to see that one...

I was taught in school that you determine whether or not to use "an" or "a" depending on how the beginning of the next word sounds.
...
But for some reason the rule is fidgety with when a word starts with "H." I've heard it properly said "an human" or "an history" but I was never instructed to pronounce it that way and it just doesn't sound right to me.

off-topic
I think those two tend to contradict each other at times depending on your accent - trying to say a 'istory is a challenge.
Then, is it an html editor or a html.. - for me it's "a" but I pronounce the "H" there a lot more than your average American/Canadian for example
... but I suppose rules are okay for writing :D

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: XYplorer File Manager
« Last post by tomos on April 18, 2008, 03:17 AM »
I find I'm using XYplorer more and more as time goes by.  The dual panes are becoming less of an issue and I have a couple of options there if i really want to see 2 panes.
BTW, the next release will feature the incredible Portable Openwith Menu (POM). Here's a preview: http://www.xyplorer.com/release_7.10.htm

that looks really nice Don :) (& the variable tab width too )

there was some kind of hack (or miniprog?) mentioned here somewhere at some stage - when you'd go to open certain file-extensions you would get the choice of (pre)selected programmes to open it - seemed to work for others but not for me so looking forward to trying your "POM"

looks great

Believe it or not, but the automated Rapidshare download tools can already handle the new "cats only" captcha... RS needs much stronger captchas. :)

so they get wobbledy

AAO I like a lot - is on Bits du Jour for the next 6 hours or so
Essential PIM is also recommended a lot here
SQLNotes - I'm a fanboy now :P
and
ToDoList is a super programme

so you've a good starting choice there..

    1.  Should the swap file go in it's own partition on the second drive?

    2.  Should I think about putting my data in a partition on the second drive instead of the first?  If I do that, can I still call the data partition "D:" or will the drive letters only go in order (eg C: and D: on the first drive, E: and F: on the second)?

    3.  If I don't get the partitioning right the first time, any recommendations on a good, inexpensive partition manager utility?

1. general consensus here was yes - first partition on second drive - (f0dder says you dont need one if you have 2GB ram :P)
I have the Temp folders there and Temp Internet files too. Just nice to have the messy stuff all in one package!

2. I would have data on one and back it up on the second, so I dont know if it would matter which you use  :-\

3.
I used that [sorry! EDIT: Parted Magic] for the partitioning
with the help of this tutorial
it was very easy

... it wants me to install a plug-in which i don't feel like doing right now. anyway, hang in there someone will come up a better solution. :)

Firefox users need to install the following ActiveX compatibility plug-in:

Windows Media Player ActveX plug-in

veering off-topic (apologies BrotherS)
seen requests for this plugin -
when this plug-in is requested would that mean one needs Windows media player installed as well?

A hero - an hero is one of the evil internet memes.

reminds me of the Stranglers song about Trotsky

"whatever happened to, Leon Trosky
he got an icepick, and cut his ear off
..
No more 'e[a]ros any more...
"

[words from memory]
edit/ in other words if you're from [parts, at least, of] England, "an Hero" is not necessarily an evil internet meme :P

Living Room / Re: Windows Install Date Thingie: I made it!
« Last post by tomos on April 16, 2008, 01:12 PM »
hi Digerati* & welcome :)
-
from a page or two back

Yikes!  Something indeed is weird.

The first number (Install Date) comes straight out of the registry; I'm just reading the number and displaying it.  Reasons that number might be wrong for you (just guessing):

- Machine came from a vendor who pre-installed Windows years ago, then imaged it.  They build new PCs by installing the image.

- Some other app twiddled the registry setting in question for some mysterious and unknowable-by-man reason.

- Registry got "fixed" at one time in the past by restoring a backup from a registry cleaning tool, and the backup was from an old version.

The second number (alive time) comes from the WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) "last reboot" date.  Again, that's the number handed over by Windows when that value is requested.  A logical person might assume Windows is actually resetting that value upon startup, but I'm not certain of anything anymore...

I'll do some research on when WMI resets that value and see what I can learn.  Anyone with more WMI knowledge/experience than I please feel free to chime in.

* btw, do you happen to hang out/help at the castlecops forums?
just tried to go there for a look now but thing's moving incredibly slowly there at the mo
