Living Room / Re: Windows 8 is just a Service/crapware pack for Windows 7

However, it will mean less malware for Windows on ARM.

Who needs scammers ripping you off at that point - it will all be done officially by MS!

I can't wait for the law suits - Apple has managed to dodge the bullet so far but MS has been sued repeatedly over competition rules and I can see it starting again but this time on speed - and I can't help feeling Apple and Google will be dragged in to because of the same levels of user extortion!

Living Room / Windows 8 is just a Service/crapware pack for Windows 7
« Last post by Carol Haynes on March 21, 2012, 08:11 PM »
I bit the bullet today!

I am going to have to support Windows 8 so having played with it in VMWare I decided it was time to try it out on a real computer and trashed my laptop to see how it works on real hardware.

The upgrade from Windows 7 (I wanted to see if it actually worked) took ages - probably about 3 hours - but went smoothly.

I don't like it any more on real hardware than on VMWare but at least I have a single screen (which makes things easier with hitting corners) and it does seem to run pretty smoothly.

Currently there is no Microsoft update available in Win8 (only Windows update) so you can't find office updates etc. but the system updated pretty quickly.

My biggest surprise was when I started running desktop applications. Every windows upgrade in the past broke application activations (Especially Photoshop and Office) but not so this time. Every application I have that requires activation works fine without needing to reactivate!

To my mind this proves that the community preview (at least) is liittle more than a service pack update to Windows 7 with an irritating modifed default explorer.exe shell

OK they have added ribbon interfaces here and there and made a few minor tweaks but a new OS - really? Are they kidding.

Anyone else seen any features that would qualify Windows 8 as more than a fairly minor service pack?

Trouble is I am trying to find something that is easy for a technophobe to use - I think the hugin approach would be too much for her to cope with (and planting fake exif data would just make it one stage worse!).

Nice try though!

Happening a lot in the UK - I was actually fixing one persons computer when a call came in -- they passed the phone to me  :D

Commonly they actually either say they are Microsoft or else they say they are partners of Microsoft.

Another common trait (in the UK anyway) is very English names but very un-English accents. They have even been known to give out contact telephone numbers and the most common remote software they use is TeamViewer.

I have written a number of articles in local magazines and newsletters warning people and got some really good feedback which is why I know just how common this sort of thing is. Inevitably though some people are taken in (some of them I would expect to have a lot more common sense!).

If they did the USA would use them for star wars practice

Thanks - but that looks almost as complicated, and probably more error prone, as what she is doing now - using photoshop to line up all the map tiles.

I will have a play tomorrow and see how it works.
957
The map site is a fairly specialised Irish Geological mapping site.

The main thing is that scales, proportions and projections need to be maintained from source images to output.

I can't see in Hugin how to set up flat, non-warping images. Lots of projections to choose from but they all distort.
958
Microsoft ICE is really very good for this job and and doesn't distort or blend images that don't need it.

Just a pity it also requires .Net 4 (which for some reason won't install on her computer - I suspect it is because it is a locked down enterprise edition of Windows 7 which now says it is not legal - it is but she has been working at home and Windows has not been able to validate its license with the university server for some months. I don't know if this is the reason it won't install but the machine is so locked down that short of wiping it and installing another version of Windows there isn't much we can do. In a few months she will be back 'in the office' and their tech support can sort it but for now she needs to work with the system 'as is'.)
959
Its not actually for me - its for a friend who is doing geological research - there are lots of maps and that is precisely what she has been doing. I am just trying to find her a quicker way of doing and also less prone to error.
960
Is there a way you can using the new 'Scrolling Capture' mode in ScreenShot Captor to achieve when you want in one capture?

Unfortunately no because it isn't a scrolling window it a mouse drag map
961
Anyone got any ideas for free image stitching software?

Specifically I need something that takes a series of overlapping screen captures from a website and stitches them into one image.

I know panorama software can do this but generally that sort of software blends colours and distorts images to make photo panoramas look correct.

What I need is something that takes raw images and works out the overlaps but doesn't process the images in any way other than line them up correctly.

Microsoft do a suitable program from their labs wehsite but it requires .Net 4 and I would prefer something light (ideally portable).

TIA.

Living Room / Re: Is Google Now Evil? Ask the Engineer!
« Last post by Carol Haynes on March 19, 2012, 01:44 PM »
To many people Google is the internet.

I ask a lot of customers which browser they use and I would say in about 70% of cases they say Google (and they don't mean Chrome which most have installed but don't know what it is or how it got there). Almost all of that 70% use internet explorer and have google as their home page - they have never heard of internet explorer - they simply use google.

Hell most people don't know what a web address is or where to put it if you know it - for the majority of people I come across if you say go to www.bbc.co.uk or facebook they get there by putting into a google search and click the first link - without ever looking what website it is actually taking them to.

I have had a number of people call me and say what has happened to Facebook and when you investigate further they have clicked a google sponsored ad and aren't on Facebook at all!

Is this the fault of Google - not at all. There are a number of culprits:

  • The individual who doesn't look at what they are doing (and mostly don't care)
  • The stupid who don't understand what they are doing and don't want to know when you try to explain
  • The even more stupid who claim to know what they are doing and are too arrogant to accept help
  • The lazy - who want to use the internet like a washing machine and aren't in the least interested in how it works

I am just amazed I see so few real viruses (though I rarely see computers that aren't infected with some malware or other).

Can I play devil's advocate?

What is a company the size of Google meant to do? They have to finance their projects and they are an advertising company. They have never hidden that agenda.

Personally I don't really have a problem with Google, except that their search service is getting less and less helpful!

FWIW I use Google services a lot but I never click on ads (not that I ever see any I would be tempted to click on anyway) and I don't use Google adwords to promote my business.

As far as I am concerned I get a free service - OK they may harvest anonymous data on my browsing but in the long run I don't really believe they get a lot from me that helps them exploit me.

Am I too naive?
965
Pagemaker was very good - probably because Adobe didn't write it! it was originally written by Aldus and bought by Adobe. They didn't do much with it and then replaced it with InDesign (which personally I find very confusing and difficult to use!)

go to TeamViewer and scroll down to TeamViewer Portable. Free for personal use. I have not tried it. I #feel# certain you will have to register.

For personal use you don't have to register TeamViewer (though I must admit I haven't tried the portable version).

You can also use TeamViewer through a webpage - just sign up for a free account and then get the remote computer to download and run the Quick Support module (small download - doesn't need installing, you can download it straight from TeamViewers home page - just click Join Remote Control Session).

I suppose you could add social networking features (such as Facebook Like buttons etc.)

Looking back through this (rather old) thread ... interesting to see Scribus is still having issues with text (in which case what is the point?).

Also noticed our previous discussion of Ragtime - the old website has now gone and the new website is entirely based in Germany and the Windows version doesn't exist any more. Do you think they priced themselves out of the market? Bet anyone who bought the Windows version at those prices are now REALLY happy!

[Update]I was wrong - the Windows version does still exist but the website is less than clear until you start looking at price lists

Looking at the prices I don't think I would be interested anyway!

They do ship product for Xara Xtreme because there is a lot of clipart, fonts and other extras including tutorial disks and a printed manual. IIRC the downloadable version is a stopgap while you wait for delivery but it doesn't work forever!

Also note that from version 6 Xara have introduced an activation system which I have found a bit flaky to date (I have had to activate one product more than once on my system because it lost activation). They also have a written policy that they only allow 3 activations for a product (irrespective of the reason) so if you are someone who reinstalls your system regularly this could have an impact. I haven't had to test their activation policy but I did send them a strong letter of complaint. I would object less if there was a way to deactivate the program and restore you activation count.
970
Already mention this in the other Xara thread note expiry date.

Sorry for the confusion - I was being sarcastic about the idea of enabling Karma. I certainly wouldn't want that!

In order to use these programs to their max, you will have to watch / read a lot of instructions, AND then even use your imagination to maybe translate back from English to the original German and back into your kind of English (??)!

Xara are still based in Little Gaddesden in Hertfordshire so their English should still be good! Magix is based in Germany but all the Xara titles are produced in the UK.

Downloaded it and installed it (mainly because I am curious about the fonts as I already have Xara Design Pro). The font download only appears the second time you launch the app after registering.

The key supplied is a trial key (it doesn't even appear in your registered products on Xara's website so keep a copy because you can't retrieve it later) - but it is a permanent unlock for the download. The program always starts with a splash screen to upgrade.

Not seen this sort of thing with Xara before but I suppose it at least gives you a taster.
