Two suggestions :

* as you are integrating Drag and Drop we will need an option for 'always on top'
* make the *.exe icon the same as the tray icon, the *.exe icon looks like a bit of squashed chewing gum...

Then : the popup with suggestions or corrections doesn't show up near or at the cursor as I think it is supposed to, it is sometimes way up left.

Ok, I'm working on a 'mini-mode' which you can have always tucked away somewhere, which will be a drop target.

I have a Top Man on the logo right now, which will then also become the new icon.

The cursor is a tricky one: I have to very politely ask the currently active application's currently active control where it thinks its caret is. I don't always get a very satisfactory reply, and have to guess a bit. I'll see if any more can be done about that.

Thanks!

OK, yes that works - I reckon I was expecting it to create a new entry from scratch (which I think is what you mean in the first part of the quote - and which is still to come ?)

Correct senor... I'll be adding that almost immediately, plus a couple of other things which I hope will improve the program's usability further.

* Structures in place to allow drag of text from other apps to automatically create Replacements/Completions (already working if you want to drag text into the Replacement Text area on the left of the app)

That was the suggestion I was going to make...! but I don't see how it works - if it does ?

Teach your Grandmother...?

Ok: Create a new Replacement by clicking the new button, and fill in the usual fields (name, mnemonic etc)

Then select some text in your external application. Single click it again, and drag over to the "Replacement" area on the bottom left of Auspex, just above the dials.

Drop.

Should work!

Jeez, you guys!  :D

Ok here she is:
http://redmine.dcmem...9/Auspex1.0.0.42.zip

Build 42
New Features

    * Can now set the typing speed when Auspex adds text to your application (see Options->Advanced)
    * New Splash screen (removed reliance on 3rd party component)
    * New Unicode XML encoder/decoder (removed reliance on 3rd party component)
    * Structures in place to allow drag of text from other apps to automatically create Replacements/Completions (already working if you want to drag text into the Replacement Text area on the left of the app)
    * Improved the efficiency of the keyboard mapper
    * Made the application able to communicate with a larger numnber of other programs (e.g. KEdit)

Bug Fixes

    * Hopefully nailed the bug where creating new items can sometimes overwrite an existing one
    * Hopefully nailed the bug where dragging an item into a sub-folder sometimes caused it to be lost

Dead Auspex here - I thought that was a joke ! - but looking forward to the next version.

No, sorry. When I first put the teaser together I gave it an end date, which of course I forgot to change with all the other faffing about.

New build coming up today... please be warned your replacements will look rather strange on re-start since I had to throw away the xml encoder I was using and roll my own. Stupid thing did not work with unicode properly, and was also replacing spaces with + signs. Argh.

Conversion services available if anyone wants me to fix their existing files, otherwise you just have a bit of editing to do in the name and replacement fields within the program itself.

The current version of Auspex will die on you today.

I'll be uploading a new version over the weekend with some significant improvements, especially for those of you who insist on using tricky applications. ;)

I have fixed many stability issues, improved unicode support, got it working with KEdit and added several new features.

There'll be a complete list in the history section of the Wiki, as well as a new section containing some ideas of what to do with the program. I am asking for people to submit other suggestions too please (suggestions involving the words 'insert' and 'orifice' will be ignored in an aloof manner)

Obviously I have also introduced several new bugs to keep you on your toes

Thank you Cranioscopical and Perry. I'll do a logging build in the next day or so.

@cranio: I think there's still a bug whereby you can lose Replacements if you drag them around into sub-folders after a change (or something like that) - could that possibly fit with what you were doing when you lost a couple of items?

Done but still no dice  :(

Actually... doesn't just sit there... it seems to be sending an Right Mouse Button click to the active window? I had to quit Auspex to type this because the Window's Context menu kept coming up. (see attachment in previous post)
I've noticed it before, but after restarting Auspex it's back to doing nothing again...

It doesn't do anything with mouse messages at all... is there a chance you have a windows hot key set up to bring up the context menu?

Can I send you a logging version? It doesn't track any passwords or anything as you hopefully know...

By the way, I should start a thread with "what's the most ridiculous completion you've had so far?"

I've seen a few boring ones with repeated typos (which actually gives me ideas for new replacements to set up to cover my crappy typing) but I've also had "pinhead" "humdinger" and "capini" suggested to me. I should probably stop writing such idiotic emails :-[

    * Can't enter master pwd to Roboform with Auspex running (tried all 3 exception settings)
Still on my todo list

    * Replacement text always positions the cursor at the beginning of the replaced text
Hangover from me changing what the 'cursor pos' value represents. Please visit your replacements and change the Cursor Pos field from 0 to -1.

    * Sometimes, clicking on a 'replacement' item that I've modified fails to open the "Replacement" text window
    * Sometimes, Auspex won't let me create a new item

Well it's a capricious little bugger isn't it? I'd love to get a set of steps to reproduce these!

Tried all settings with above.
One thing that would help a bit with testing is if there were a mechanism for Auspex to refresh itself once changes are made, rather than stop-starting.

There's a new, tiny button in the top toolbar that does that very thing.

Auto-completion writes the (tab) trigger into the file.

#$##!! Yes it probably does. KEdit is a bit of a rotter to deal with... I'm getting there though.

Thank you very much for all your comments Senor Cranio.

Could you explain the sliders on the Advanced Program Options page : why two ? Are they lower and higher ?

Eventually they will control the speed at which Auspex enters text for you. If the sliders are split, it'll represent a random variation of typing speed to look a little more natural. Feel free to suggest why I might be adding this!

Please do also make any and all suggestions, either here or raise them in redmine.

1.0.0.37 seems to be working here, at least on my simple test of entry that triggers after i type a space.

A brief help file that just showed a sample entry and said how to test it would be useful for first time users -- since i suspect many people will not be familiar with the basic logic behind using this (though they will grasp it from a simple example).

WIKI!

http://redmine.dcmem...ex/wiki/Replacements

Or can most folks not get to this thing?

I'm actually in the process of setting up a website for Auspex anyway, so I'll certainly make sure this text is all available there, but in addition I have a 'Wizard' planned for the system so that folks can get the idea of what to do a bit easier. Ooh, that gives me an idea also for a "test this" feature.

Thanks - I should shout "WIKI" at you more often

Tim: Auspex b37 has ceased to work?? Well it runs... but doesn't replace anything or trigger anything???

I can quit and go back to previous version OK.

Yoinks! Can you clear your Exceptions list, and maybe also try creating a new replacement? Maybe I was clumsy when adding defaults to new fields.

(It's working here but I would not swear to anything given that I've just completely screwed my own replacements file by playing with different character encodings - but words are popping up ok as I type this)

Can anyone else look at 37 also please?

I believe you Perry, I just don't want to  :D

I just set up an account with 'Pingdom' and I believe they load my homepage every minute from a random server. Here are the first few results:

You seriously need another host, my ping times are lower than the ones from the hosts country, and I'm on the other side of the planet:

C:\>ping 98.131.45.219

Pinging 98.131.45.219 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 98.131.45.219: bytes=32 time=288ms TTL=43
Reply from 98.131.45.219: bytes=32 time=330ms TTL=43

Reply from 98.131.45.219: bytes=32 time=541ms TTL=43

Ping statistics for 98.131.45.219:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 288ms, Maximum = 541ms, Average = 412ms

In my post, these were page load times for the front page, so not too bad.

I just got this reply from the admins on my host:

I want to let you know that our system administrators reviewed your traceroute logs and explained that they are absolutely normal, there is nothing strange. They explained that for other networks (ourside of our office) it is normal to have time outs after our MLSes, right after this line:
OH-MLS1-609.Te-9-2.opentransfer.com (98.130.213.18) [AS32392 {Ecommerce}]
That's why please re-check this issue from your side once again, make sure that there are no problems in your network, contact your ISP to investigate it from their side as well.

The way I look at DC is as a splendid resource and proving ground for my work. Plus I have made some good friends  :-[

The gang here have so far: suggested neat features, patiently tested, helped to fix, created logos and graphics, offered to document, and yes, donated hard cold cash to help me create my software.

All of that is worth a lot to me - probably more than the price of a few loose sales, and (I hope) reflects in the stability and quality of the final product.

Therefore, in return, I believe that anyone who is an active DC member has earned the right to a copy of my program. If they really like it they will, I hope, donate... but the real key here is that they are part of the DC community, and thus help keep it alive, interesting and fun.

The rest of the world has a choice: buy a license and help me, or join DC, hopefully make a donation, and help a lot of people. I shall give them the option to do either or ideally both

Oh, it must have "magically gone right all by itself"
972
I know, it makes you want to weep. I have a ticket so let's see if they have some real tech staff that they simply keep away from the first line support.

Yes, the site is pingable. Well, from here at any rate.

Would someone be able to do some tracerting to the site again next week perhaps please?

973
and oh boy, were they hopeless when I did a 'live chat support' session.

I pasted a failed tracert to them, and the guy goes "those 3 stars at the end of the tracert mean you've reached your destination"  :-\
