I had no trouble downloading it from mozilla website about 1/2 hr ago

Are people simply installing it ontop of 2 or seperately ?
Separately seems better... :-\

General Software Discussion / Re: How do incremental backup programs work?
« Last post by tomos on June 17, 2008, 06:28 AM »
So, the general opinion would be that the best programs (that do have incremental) mount the files as a virtual disk, and don't have block level incremental?

well, if a programme exists that does "block level incremental" backups I'd like to know about it & would most probably WANT it as well :D

great review Justice, thanks

the JD Plus service ... allows web access via Jungle Disk's website (doesn't require your pc to be on)
-
how do you mean "doesn't require your pc to be on" -
do you mean it makes your S3/Amazon account accessible from other pc's?

General Software Discussion / Re: How do incremental backup programs work?
« Last post by tomos on June 17, 2008, 06:17 AM »
AFAIK incremental backup usually means they will back up the files that have changed (again) and ignore the files that havent
That usually means full file is backed up

Then there's partial file update (probably known under different names) which is used with synching -
the changed "bit" in your original 8GB file gets updated in the synched file
Obvious problem here being if your file corrupts you have no backup as such
SFFS does this
SFFS keeps track of files if moved (says it does anyway) but not sure what happens if the name is changed...

thats about my limit [Justice got in ahead of me there...]

rely on ... Acronis True Image to keep me out of harm's way.

I sort of rely on Acronis TI as well, but I've never actually restored an image - it sort of reminds me of the first time I opened a computer to replace a CD drive, I was, ahh ... scared out of my wits :D
The idea of restoring an image has the same effect on me - MG - what if nothing works after :tellme:

Like the sound of Rollback RX but the price ($69...+ 19% tax here :() seems a lot more than it's worth (to me at any rate)

General Software Discussion / Re: Let go of your bookmarks!
« Last post by tomos on June 16, 2008, 02:18 PM »
Scrapbook is one of the most useful add-ons for Firefox. One of the reasons why Firefox is still my primary browser.

Surfulater was the main reason for a long time that I stayed with FF
it still is one, along with flashblock tabmixplus adblockplus ...

I save a lot of reference sort of stuff in it which I wouldnt use that often but occasionally, also tried using it for bookmarks but with the FARR bookmarks-plugin I now just save bookmarks in ff & make sure there's some easily searchable word in title
Like others I dont use most of them at all, but what difference - they sit there unsorted, unseen, occasionally loved :)

I presume (cause of your praise of same) that that's a sad "sniff" as opposed to a ...sniffy :D one

General Software Discussion / Re: Monster Cables- The World should know!
« Last post by tomos on June 15, 2008, 03:04 PM »
Another resurrection, but it's worth it for some good laughs. Denon released these $500 cables to output audio from their DVDs, as you may expect it's a digital to digital connection, so they're basically useless. Still, some customers did
...

most entertaining read in quite a while ;D thanks Lashiec

Potential warning to other users:

I made the mistake of taunting the AKDL1.
As a result, these cables have cleaned out my checking account, fired me from my job, tainted my daughter and emailed scandalous photos of my wife to family and friends.

I am a battered shell of a man.

Though, I must admit, I do appreciate the crisp highs and thundering lows.

5.0 out of 5 stars
I found the perfect use for this cable...., June 15, 2008 ...

I used 6 of them to connect up my time machine to my Starship.

But now my cell phone won't work. Must be interference from the planet being out of phase with my blue tooth headset.

On the bright side...it negated the affects of the Aurora Borealis over my house.

Good grief...

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: Character Table Plug-In
« Last post by tomos on June 15, 2008, 02:50 PM »
I'm not the expert here :-[ but when you say install -
is the plugin in the FARR plugin folder?
.....\FindAndRunRobot\Plugins\Character_Table\ ...

Did you restart FARR - there's other ways to reload plugins in options - but restart is the easiest to explain!

here's my chair of choice -

swopper_demo_blue.jpg
http://www.swopper-uk.com/home.shtm

well ... it's actually a stool, innit !?!

I tried it for an hour or so once & loved it - you're forced, you could say, to sit with a straight back and the movement keeps your back "fit" and I found it very comfortable to boot
@ $600/€500 pricetag I'll be waiting!

Find And Run Robot / Re: [Feature Request] Support Alt+Tab properly
« Last post by tomos on June 12, 2008, 03:47 PM »
wraith: Check your options. On the  "Display" tab, check "Show on taskbar when active". If you're running Vista64, it might still not appear on alt+tab, but at least it is shown on taskbar.

super, I never noticed that one

... Are windows without such a task bar entry never accessible via Alt+Tab?
Why is FARR blinking very shortly when pressing Alt+Tab if the option is not activated?

stuff in the tray doesnt show in Alt-Tab at any rate [edit/ well now FARR does :)]
when does it blink? - I mean if it's in the foreground or in background when you Alt+Tab? (just checking it here, seems okay - xp home)

Opera. So close to perfection, and so delicately screwed up by a tremendous design error or badly implemented feature.

Opera, Opera, "Oh I used to love [it], but I'm all right now"
I miss it though :(
lack of plugin support I could live with, just about, but I've gotten so used to FlashBlock/Adblock - I know Opera is supposed to have alternatives but they either dont work as good or are too confusing to make the effort of figuring them out - I did make an attempt last year but gave up
Also little things that are just so much easier to do in FF & I think, why bother...

Why not send an email at once to tell all DC members?

maybe mouser will mention this in this month's newsletter. :)

sounds like a good idea

General Software Discussion / Re: Context menu Antivirus
« Last post by tomos on June 11, 2008, 09:20 AM »
I would have thought most antivirus progs (that are installed) would add context menu option & simply allow you to disable realtime-protection (the one I'm running at the mo does these but it's not available anymore - the AOL/Kapersky/Active Virus Shield)

I'm sure I used use AntiVir in this way
-
I had AVG running as well so I disabled the realtime-protection of AntiVir via the uninstall options actually!
but that was a couple of years ago so couldnt honestly tell you what it's like now

EZTwain http://www.dosadi.com/eztwain1.htm, a basic (as in look) scanner software application that will work with all scanners that support TWAIN.

I've gotten distracted from this quest but will get back to it -

Living Room / Re: Drinking Vinegar?

Oh, and mouser... NYAH! :P See! I'm not insane! (Or at least I'm not alone in my insanity... ;) )
;D

"and drinking a $20 bottle of balsamic a week!"
go on! go for something more exotic - those rice vinegars sound intriguing - to me at any rate :)

Finally got to google "drinking vinegar" - mostly sites about cider vinegar, but here's an intriguing one from the first page

Vinegar002.png

Then I read up on vinegar cause I realised I didnt know what distinguished it from alcohol -
afraid I'm still not sure apart from that with vinegar they start the process with ethanol which basically is a purified vodka by the sounds of it, and then the fact it has a certain PH & a certain acidity (think they the same thing actually..)
