Living Room / Member's *non-software* sites starting with ...
« Last post by tomos on July 03, 2008, 03:51 PM »
As a noncoder who wanted to start an "IT_Analphabetic's" club with Curt (but I was too un-organised to get it together :-\) I think I qualify to start a series of post's highlighting dc member's sites which have very little to do with software :)

First (I only have two sites in mind so feel free to contribute!) is Brett's photos (link for site @ end of post)

Brett01.png

One of the things I like about dc is the variety of people from all over the world that are involved. Well, Brett is the other side of the world from me so I find myself fascinated by these photographs of foreign landscapes

Brett02.png

I'm not the best of critics but I just really like these photos
Having some small connection with the person who took them helps too of course (no disclaimer required :P)

go have a look!

I'm giving up on threatfire
-
over the last few months it has on a number of occasions seized up when giving a warning notice (usually when I'm installing something)
The warning box often doesnt display properly, not showing the options (allow, quarantine, - from memory)
Yesterday it did show properly but when I clicked allow I got no response

Unfortunately the proplem then is that you cant actually kill the programme, not using process explorer at any rate and the only solution seems to be the restart button, which also didnt work properly yesterday so I had to pull the plug on everything & start again
Not nice to have to do that

ironically they have a survey on their website which I tried to do twice over that time adding a note about this problem
Both times the site froze when I finished survey but before it eh went through ...
They may have a forum or maybe I'll email them, but I'm not going to risk actually using it any more :(

ubcd4win definitely works on NFTS
see this page for list of tools - has the Kapersky AV standalone one, read something about that lately (off to put my brain on the rack ... was it here, dont think so...)

Since 2.14.01 FarrFox doesn't work for me.
No results at all.

I get results from IE, none from last FF version 2

edit/
wtf. can you guys check your advanced options of farrfox and see if maybe some checkboxes got unchecked?
also can you check that you have farrfox version 1.08.01 installed?
all checkboxes ticked
1.08.01 installed

looking around a bit in Amazon S3 -
it's not very accessible without Jungle Disk is it!? (well, it took a while to even figure out I was already logged in)
Make that pretty much totally inaccessible (to me at any rate..)

If you have Super Flexible File Synchronizer & can figure out how to create a "Bucket" (basically your folder/file container) in S3,
it seems easy to use SFFS to backup directly to S3
(in Advanced Mode, create or edit a profile and click on the "Internet..." button. Change drop-down setting from ftp to Amazon S3. More details here)
- I'm not sure if Partial file update is supported.

Will probably get Jungle Disk anyway cause I think it allows SFFS to use partial file update
Also, it's great to be able to browse your backups & keep an overview and have it all so accessible

the default win+key shortcuts aren't useful anyway (except for win+l ...

[OffTopic] is that win+i or win+L  :tellme: :) win+i googles nothing so I think it's lock keyboard or lock something? (how do you unlock :tellme: :) ) [/OffTopic]

the Plus version is not supported by the european servers - I've opted for the american ones now so wont go back unless things very sluggish or something :)

hmm
a straight forward copy/ drag n drop of files in DOpus results in new modified date - is that the norm -
using SFFS the files keep their original modified dates (I've no experience with online backup or with networks even :) )
I'm reasonably used to SFFS so probably wont use Jungle Disk as the actual backup software

Well, unless you plan on constantly moving a lot of data the lower performance shouldn't be too much of an issue.  Just schedule Jungle Disk to do the transfers when you aren't on your computer.  When I first installed it, I transferred about 2 gigs worth of data over the first couple of days.  Since then, I only move a few MB per day.

thanks Carl
rebooting now for the drive remapping

I'm just after installing Jungle Disk & opening an account with Amazon
Opening amazon a/c is a bit confusing -
I thought I was just signing up for S3 & was faced with a list of services with no S3 in sight till I figured it's "Amazon Simple Storage Service" (I presume!)

my question is
Anyone in Europe using American storage for S3 ?
-
The American storage is a lot cheaper but they do say that the European will give better performance in Europe..
If the American storage is atall passable I'll probably go with that cause I will be loading lots of GB's
although looking again it's 13c(US) more expensive per GB in Europe which wont break the bank...

edit/ corrected my sums

I meant that I prefer to use simple <Win>-keyed move windows to its positions, without any generation of grid on the screen. Anyway I'll try to make it by myself.

there are a couple of other hotkey scripts here (dc) that move windows around - I'm happy with gridmove so havent paid much attention to them
Also not sure what to search for ...
these might be worth a read
DONE: move around windows with keys + extra feature
and
(Feature Request) Arrow keys to move windows inside grid

Quick File Compare. Check out with a single click whether two files are same or different.

Yaaah!
9467
I actually dont want to have to look at text & compare it (or even know where the differences are) - I just want to know if they're the same or not :)

Maybe I should just ask DonL seeing as I have XYPlorer liscence...

I keep getting "sorry, this video is no longer available"
...
been seeing that message a lot more lately (using all, well, IE, FF, Opera, browsers)

thanks Abterix ... and jgpaiva (i think :P)

actually I wasnt as lazy as it looked ...
I had found the thread Abterix points to
I think there is no "Support for multi-session" CDs right now.(***)

Changel log 2.4.0.0 says "Added: Support for multi-session/track CD reading/burning (*using a CUE file "

See the forum "Multisession Disk, Where is the option??" too.

I had also found this thread *
ImgBurn can't start/continue a multisession disc in Build mode, although it can read and write multisession discs in Read and Write modes smile.gif
-http://forum.imgburn.com/index.php?showtopic=6576&hl=multisession
which I had misread as ImgBurn can.... which left me very confused :)

I'm always amazed how little interest there is in multi-session burning
maybe it's only when one starts working [at home] with bigger files (and doing half-hourly or so backups) that it seems attractive ??

Keep thinking about going online backup but slow to change...

* edit/ * boy, do they have some NSFW avatars over there ...
9473
and
Support for multi-session/track CD reading/burning

has anyone actually used imgburn for multisession ?
I cant find anything related to it in programme or "Guide"/help pdf
I know, I know, I should go ask in their forum but I dont have time right now so thought I'd try the lazymans way :)
