Tech Support Alert has had a paid premium section for a long time, and if you like it, as everybody on this thread seems to, why haven't you supported it by paying for the premium stuff (which I find definitely worthwhile)?
-Tiesenhausen (July 12, 2008, 04:01 PM)

not sure if that's directed at me (or just more generally) - in case, yes, I have a subscribtion, & definitely worthwhile as you say

re springing money to see what somethings like - ok, it doesnt have to be much but I'd find it hard to do - personally I think they'd be better off doing something like giving everyone a few issues of the paid version so people get a taste of it & then splitting it up into paid/unpaid

but as we all keep saying - we'll see :D

Living Room / Re: Is More Memory Better? - a bit-tech.net article

Depends on how long you want the new computer to last, I guess, and what you're going to use it for.

I wouldn't go below 2gig for a new machine today, and 4 gigs is probably a good idea if you're planning to run Vista... but of course you can add RAM later, so you could always start with two gigs. The big question is probably whether to buy DDR2 or DDR3 RAM, and which speed...

could there be a problem though if mixing different types of memory? or do you mean decide now & when you upgrade ram get the same type?

A big part of the positive energy is created by you jgpiava, and others like you, who make this place so nice.

I really really agree.  :-*

great idea VIP
great video too - the dance of the icons  ;D [what is that piece of music?]

That is why I am paying ZERO.

We'll see. Hopefully we won't lose Gismo.

We'll see as you say,
but, as said above, Gizmo's content seems to be planned for the paid version only

I've done a set it and forget it thingy -
every now & again I think omg I'd better double-check /compare folders in Dopus or whatever and everything's looking synchronised

I'm backing up my local backups - have everything already compressed & encrypted where necessary so I just synch it over

So easy  :-*  yes, thanks again Justice

General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?
« Last post by tomos on July 11, 2008, 01:22 PM »
Actually, some web content is not well captured by EverNote, anything with CSS and JS does not import well. Other programs, including MS Word do a much better job.

just cross-referencing with this thread (quote from johnk below) "Reliable web page capture..."

In my endless quest/obsession to find the perfect information manager, I've decided that one of the key features for me is reliable web page capture. Not pixel perfect. But close enough. There are lots of other features I'm willing to compromise on, but not that one.

Now you wouldn't think that would be a problem. But it is. Most of the information managers we know and love just are not as reliable as they should be. I have licences for three of the best -- Ultra Recall, Surfulater and Evernote. All claim that web page capture is part of their feature set.

And yet compared to the free Firefox add-on Scrapbook, their performance is variable, to say the least. Pictures speak louder than words, so here's a comparison of the three programs I mention above with Scrapbook, and web capture specialists Local Website Archive and WebResearch Pro.

and the challenge is :)

What I want is for one of the heavyweight information managers ... to improve their programs and start providing bullet-proof web page capture ...

Allen: yes breeze simplified micro will get some TLC when Kestrel goes gold.
it is currently available (maybe everyone else already knew :P but I didnt/realise it would work)

Menu/Tools/Appearance/Skins/ - select "find more skins"
scroll down to bottom of page, it's still dated 2006 but it seems to work well here

General Software Discussion / Re: Equivalent to Foldershare?
« Last post by tomos on July 11, 2008, 03:29 AM »
The problem I had with FolderShare was caused by Excel, which changes the timestamp of the opened file to the current time, and changing it back again after closing it without any editing. This obviously confuses all real time synchronizers/backups/versioning systems. Anyone having an idea? This is my biggest pet peeve with Excel (at least versions 2000 and 2003).

apparently it's solved in the new file-format but that no solution for a lot of us :)
same problem with Filehamster too - see this FH thread

I opened an xls file with Star Office & it didnt get updated by Filehamster - havent tested it beyond that because I rarely use xls files but could (possibly) be an option
I guess the only other option is to backup xls files in a different manner :(

Could you send the link you got that worked?

well the problem is it wont work for you :) - it has my member number in the link & all my details come up - you should be getting mail about it soon - they probably working through the alphabet...

FWIW, until what you want appears...

Floating ruler from Renegade, right here on DoCo
Numpad mouse from Kalvin Au

Help me to sort out some finicky positioning stuff from time to time.
-cranioscopical (July 10, 2008, 07:36 AM)

will try those out, they may even satisfy my needs
not sure what a ruler does :-[ but will ask again after I've had a look at it :)

in some image programs, if you're resizing something you can press a qualifier key & it will "constrain proportions" or only allow vertical or horizontal resizing
Also in some programs you can constrain how objects are moved

I'm wondering if possible to do the same with mouse movements in general
Say,
using Control key + Click/drag the mouse pointer will only move along a vertical line
and I presume a different key would be necessary for horizontal
(diagonal/45° movement isnt of interest to me but may be to others?)

Useful for panning images where you want to be reasonably accurate about what you're seeing/showing -
i.e. this is on exactly the same level as that
Could be useful if printing large(-er than page size) image & you have the option to pan the print-view

FWIW could there be problems with the programmes that already do something similar (as described above)?
I'm just throwing this out there as an idea that I would use but I guess I'm not sure how much energy it would be worth putting into
Anyone else think this could be useful?

hmm,
there seems to be some confusion ...
I got two identical [well, I thought] mails headed "Gizmo's Support Alert Newsletter Special Announcement, 9th July 2008"

The link for managing my subscription from first "special announcement" mail, didnt recognise my Support Alert subscription and asks me to subscribe/donate - turns out this is sent to Windows Secrets subscribers where I'm not a paid subscriber.
The other mail recognised my subscription

Also Gizmo's stuff seems to be only in the paid version from now on (I'm not objecting to that, just stating it!)

What you get                                       Free     Paid
The newest Windows tips you need              Yes  Yes
Gizmo's newest ratings of free software               Yes
In-depth analysis of Windows' latest patches         Yes
How to guard against unpatched threats                 Yes
Access to all old and new paid content                   Yes

the portable version can be run whilst a fully installed version is in use.

hmmm,
just tried:
---------------------------
Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition | PortableApps.com
---------------------------
Another instance of Firefox is already running. Please close other instances of Firefox before launching Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

does anyone know, is there maybe a different version of FFportable ? or does it have to be on an external drive or something (doesnt make any sense to me but cant think of any other reason..)

This looks like the zoom memory, where, by default, the zoom setting is remembered per site (and across sections). It is a new feature in Firefox 3.

To check, you can reset the zoom for donationcoder.com (Ctrl+0, or View > Zoom > Reset)
that's it all right dmtrs, thanks

strange that it decided to resize one site and not most others - or not in f0dder's Firefox for example !!
Just checking: so if I set zoom to 120% for dc, yes, it does remember ...

I would reckon it was previously at about 110% or less (-I work with scales so I'm a good guage ;)) and when I clicked on the tab it jumped back to 100% (or 10% less :D)
anyways, sorted now, thanks

dont know where to post this - re the forum here & how it shows in FF3 in particular

I open unread posts page
open links of interest in the background
when I click on those tabs that were opened in the background, there's a noticeable jump - the page (and text?) reduces in size like something slotting into place -
anyone else experiencing this ??

I've only seen it with dc on FF3 but saying that, I've only tried a couple other forums, otherwise not had any similar trouble with other sites

Well done, Tomos, you win today's spot-the-dummy competition ;)
-cranioscopical (July 08, 2008, 10:55 AM)

Oops, I see how that was misinterpreted.  I was the dummy to whom that was meant to refer. :-[
-cranioscopical (July 08, 2008, 01:52 PM)

the plot thickens ;D ;D - no worries Chris -
I meant god knows what you might have uploaded instead of the picture of the levitating cat!

To get back on topic :)
mouser,
your round table sortof inspired me to round off the edge of my table - as in get it beveled (it's just oiled timber) but now I'm actually going to get the edge curved as well - mainly cause I have (the probably very bad) habit of resting my mouse hand-wrist over the edge of the table and a curved/round table fits the angle of the hand better ...

If you cant follow that I'll post a photo when I get it done!
