Living Room / How Google is Killing Honest (Organic) Search
« Last post by mouser on July 02, 2013, 05:31 PM »
Each year Google becomes more and more of a greedy obnoxious a**hole of a company..  One day we are going to look back and ask ourselves how we allowed an advertising company to so completely control the internet.

Google is building a new version of the search engine that made it great. This time, however, it is a search engine exclusive to the garden of Google products. If you compete with Google in any way, you’re in its crosshairs. Your chances of ranking high enough to garner traffic are virtually nil and getting smaller.

The scariest part of this is that, if you sell something using the internet, regardless of whether or not you see yourself as a “local" business - or think you’re competing with Google - Google sees you as competition. Searching for “Camera" or “Buy a Dress Shirt" gets you a nearly identical split of screen real estate as that of “local" searches. Nearly everything leads back to a Google product except for an ever-decreasing amount of “Organic" real estate.

It’s Google’s world, and from now on, you’ll have to pay to play in it.

Ok Chris and I found that when you have the rare option to not auto-save captures (on bottom of "More Interface Options" tab) checked, this could interfere with the filename overide field in the post-capture dialog.

What i've done is changed it so SC *ignores* this option to not auto-save captures when you use the post-capture dialog, since i think that's redundant, given that the post capture dialog asks you to choose to save or discard.

If anyone actually uses the "do not auto save" option in conjunction with the post-capture dialog, and doesn't like this change, try this version and let me know!

yeah it should not be possible for you to enter a value into that
overide name field in the post capture dialog that is NOT used as part
of the filename.

so let me tell you what i believe is happening in your case.
you have the filename template set to "%filememo%" which is a
MULTILINE thing.

so what's happening is that the %quickfield% or the overide is being
ADDED to your filename but its AFTER a carriage return, so its
basically being truncated off.

you COULD fix this by making yourfilename template like this:

"%quickfield% %filememo%"

by putting the quickfield part first you would ensure it wouldnt get
truncated off.

does that make sense?

Welcome to the site, wolvie, and thanks for the nice words

im not sure im completely following the point about the .+ music thing..

In the Core-Farr.alias helpfarr alias the "FARR - Search Help | restartsearch fhelp\s" doesn't appear to work, if I remove the \s then it works.
seems to work here..

maybe because it's misspelled -- it's "hypnotherapy: not "hynotherapy"

Just to clarify, DC software tends to be mirrored and available for download on other sites -- it's just that you need to visit our site for a license key, which is by design -- we want people to visit DC and learn a little about us if they are going to be using our software.

My Clipboard Help and Spell program will happily take the text selected in any program and do manipulations including removing blank lines, and then paste it back (replacing the original text), and let you set up a hotkey to do this.

I've said it before, i'll say it again -- as the person who created the license key procedure -- i completely understand the frustration and the desire to post and complain about it.  I am one of those people with very short frustration fuse and i'm guessing that i would be one of those people posting and complaining if i visited a site like DonationCoder and just wanted to download and use some software.

So, i have nothing but sympathy for those who get frustrated by DC procedure for license keys.

I just hope people will understand after some thought that we are doing our best to balance some tricky issues that have no easy answers.  As long as we are committed both to raising money from end user donations and keeping our software free, we must accept that things are going to be a little wonky (see this article about DonationCoder for why).

Can you elaborate on this:
"but not in preferences-file naming template-default new file name. Preferences-file naming template-default new file name must be empty/blank to accommodate the override."

that doesn't quite seem right -- it may be a coding error on my part.

Ah you make a good point.
That overide field really overides the QUICK field.

So.. if you have a %quickfield% in your filename template, it will replace that PORTION of your filename template.
But if you don't have a %quickfield% string anywhere in your filename template, it should be used as the entire filename.
At least that's my memory -- does that match your observations.

There is no option for this, but it's an interesting idea..
However, try the new beta which does have a way to set the filename quickly from the post-capture dialog, which i think is your main goal.

The license key stuff is a bit annoying and confusing, there is no denying that.  We only ask that you put up with it until we find a better way to do things that encourages donations while keeping the software free.

Ath's question is a good one -- if you copied the files to the directory from the portable release instead of using the installer or copied the files from an xp computer, then it would be configured to try to store the data in the Program Files directory which is not right.  You are not allowed to save files there on win 7.

In fact, just from looking at the directory it's trying to save in we know that it's trying to save someplace it shouldn't be.  On simple answer is to delete the configdir.ini file that is in that C:\Program Files\LaunchBarCommander directory, and remember to save your launch bars in a directory inside your documents directory.

mtemp,

The new beta release of Screenshot Captor should address your requests for modifying the post-capture dialog.
See this thread for more info, and let me know.

See if this beta fixes the paste stack as block limit:
