Protection test - March to July 2015:

2015-07-23_093508.png

Quite a surprise: The bests in this particular test were BitDefender, Kaspersky and Panda!  :o
Microsoft Security Essential was just as bad as TT_Vipre and Lavasoft.

However:
Once again Agnitum’s Outpost Security Suite, winner of several VB100 awards, was not part of the test.

AV testing: Is your antivirus app doing its job?
By Lincoln Spector on July 22, 2015 in Top Story

Using savvy security software is an important part of staying safe online. But just how effective is it? You can’t depend on your experience — or mine.

The best source for information on the competency of anti-malware apps comes from a handful of independent, virus-testing organizations. Here’s one example.

If asked, I can tell you the qualities of a word processor, photo editor, backup program, or other app; all I need to judge them is time, experience, and some hands-on testing. I can tell you whether a program is easy to use and discuss features both cool and pointless. But evaluating anti-malware apps is an entirely different game.

Sure, I could truthfully tell you that I’ve used Avira for five years without a single infection. But when it comes to security software, one person’s experience is meaningless. It’s like saying that smoking is safe because George Burns lived to be 99 — it’s an anecdote, not a statistic. It’s akin to trying to prove a negative; i.e., I haven’t been infected so it must be working (up until the day some hacker takes over your system).

Malware testing is not only difficult, it’s potentially dangerous. After all, it requires keeping and safely applying a massive collection of nasty viruses, Trojans, and so forth. That type of testing is beyond all but highly experienced security researchers.

Fortunately, there are organizations that are up to the task — and who are willing to publish their testing results to the public:

This read made me worry about my use of MSE => 90% is not much. When the upgrade to Win 10 is done, I really should reinstall Outpost!

Now go and read, and then come back and tell:

What AV-system do you use?   :tellme:  Did these test results made you reconsider?

-the text on Reddit: http://redd.it/3e28qi

One uploads the picture to Imgur, and the text to Reddit. Don't ask me why, because I don't understand, and I might of course have misunderstood how it works. I am not a member of Imgur, because you may download their pictures, without being a member. I am a member of Reddit, because I once wanted to say something, and I have not yet figured out how to cancel the annual, auto-renewing, PayPal pay system.

thank you for the idea to go and buy a more powerful PC, kyrathaba

I have been hesitating for a very long time, not knowing what I needed the most, a new smart phone, a new television, or a new PC - the money merely is to just one item. You just made me make up my mind!

And then again; I waited this long, maybe I can wait a little longer?

do I really have to read an entire book,
That link goes to 404...

sorry, I didn't LOOK at the link, so I hadn't yet realized the page was local - and chrome://bprivacy/content/BetterPrivacy.html doesn't work as a link, not even with a "http://" in front... Of course I already had BetterPrivacy installed, without cheating, when I began whining, but I had not yet realized it only will start working, when I close the browser. It removed 151 LSO things, the first time I closed Firefox. The next five times, there was nothing to delete. Therefore I have removed the "Work when I close my browser", and instead checked "Add this option to Firefox's >Clear History and ...<"

936

forgive my whining, but do I really have to read an entire book, before using this one? Does it work out of the box?  :tellme:

The Top Story: "Are system/Registry cleaners worthwhile?" (spoiler: surprisingly one of them is!)

Are system/Registry cleaners worthwhile?
By Fred Langa on July 15, 2015 in Top Story

As Windows and third-party software have evolved over the years, Windows Secrets has periodically put various Registry- and system-cleanup products through their paces to examine the claims made by and about them.

For example, most cleanup software claims to streamline and shrink the Registry by removing obsolete, erroneous data and broken links stored there. Other products claim to do more, such as removing junk files, reducing boot times, and improving overall system performance.

Back in the days of Windows XP, third-party system cleaners were of real value in removing detritus from the operating system. But the current versions of Windows have many more built-in tuning and self-repair options. So do third-party cleaners still deliver any real-world benefit? Do they live up to their impressive claims?
-Windows Secrets
conclusions
If you follow the recommendations in ##those articles##, then your PC will most likely also be lean, clean, and running well — without the assistance of any third-party cleaning tool.

A second related takeaway from these tests: If your PC is at all healthy, it’s unlikely you’ll see miraculous results from any commercial cleaning tool — and certainly no “47 percent faster boot times.”

My third and final takeaway: I’ll continue using — and recommending — lightweight tools such as CCleaner for routine cleanups. As mentioned earlier, this test (one cycle of software setup and knockdown on already-clean systems) didn’t leave a lot to clean up. But each cycle of software installs, upgrades, and uninstalls leaves behind some digital debris. Over time, it adds up and can become a significant source of slowdowns and clutter.

These tests tend to confirm that the manual cleaning methods mentioned above, plus lightweight cleaning from third-party tools such as CCleaner, might be all you need to keep a PC operating at or near best-available levels of performance.

I also worry about over-cleaning. I have to wonder about the high fault numbers reported by jv16 PowerTools X and Advanced SystemCare and what the two products are actually cleaning. (In some cases, the cure might be worse than the disease.)(...)W20150716-TS-SummaryResults.png

It's summer, so the article is a cook-up from their articles last August.

you're right, ewemoa, the one I was recommending is only a bookmarklet button on your browser's panel, so it cannot work offline. Their server on their site is doing the job, but it is doing it very well  ;-) The other one, mentioned by Tom, is for your homepage, (read http://www.printfriendly.com/button), but of course also going to their site, http://www.printfriendly.com

939
I think their wording merely is meant to hold some doors open, and maybe shot any other door.

Readable from Baris Derin stopped working, but luckily I've found the bookmarklet button Print Friendly instead. It is by far The Best virtual printer I so far have tried - and MUCH better than any desktop "Print to pdf" I know of! It is free, and this can make you wonder why, so I went to their About -page:

About PrintFriendly
PrintFriendly cleans and formats web pages for perfect print experience. PrintFriendly removes Ads, Navigation and web page junk, so you save paper and ink when you print. It's free and easy to use. Perfect to use at home, the office, or whenever you need to print a web page.

Features
Print Preview: Optimizes and displays content for print.
Edit Before Printing: Remove images, text, and print only what you want.
Print or Save as PDF: Print now, or save for later as a PDF.
Instructions For: FireFox Internet Explorer Chrome Safari iPad & iPhone Other

The PrintFriendly Story
Web pages usually look terrible when printed, and waste tons of paper and ink. It's bad for your wallet and the environment. In 2009, I had had enough, and set to work on solving the problem with PrintFriendly.com. The PrintFriendly team is Taylor Norrish (Founder, Customer Support, and Light Tech Stuff) and Manu Janardhanan (Programming, Servers, and Serious Tech Stuff). Special thanks to Vamsee Kanakala for helping to create v1, and Arc90 for their ingenious readability script.

I too use Mp3tag. I am however not impressed that after all these years, there is still no way to say "[Album Artist] same as [Artist]"

@superboyac
how did the audio fingerprinting / "Music Identification via Sound Card" turn out to be like? Can it recognize music from YouTube? My "competitor" is wrong a lot more often than right.

Maybe not install new programs for this just yet. Your taskbar looks like shit, and you say WinKey+Left_Arrow doesn't work. I think you should fix these two problems, before you do anything else.

in my opinion they could call it version 4.390, or so. Why change the major version's number, when I can't spot any differences?
