Living Room / Re: I'm Going to Build a PC. Suggestions?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on March 26, 2012, 03:22 AM »
One other thing I learned from my subscription to MaximumPC is that the AMD GPU's doesn't support PhysX that's included in cool games like Batman:  Arkham City.  So, I guess I'll go with nVidia.
-Carol Haynes (March 25, 2012, 09:59 PM)

An nVidia GPU isn't required for PhysX - it's only required if you want to offload some of work to the GPU rather than have the CPU do it.

With current model GPUs and CPUs I doubt whether you'd notice any appreciable difference.

There are a few games around that seem to work better with nVidia or with Physx turned off (Mirror's Edge springs to ming) but generally I see Physx running fine with AMD cards (I am using a Sapphire Radeon HD6890 with 1Gb DDR5 Ram and three 24" HD monitors in EyeInfinity mode for gaming and don't have many issues - non that haven't been fixable - with modern games).

Horses for courses with graphics cards.

AMD cards support more than two screens and some games are written specifically for AMD.

For what its worth I have an AMD card and Arkham City is just fine.

Living Room / Re: What are your experiences with payment providers?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on March 25, 2012, 03:35 PM »
Actually it boils down to three options:

1) Inside EU - individuals or non-VAT registered.
2) Valid EU VAT registered company
3) Outside EU

From the form people complete on your website the EU/non-EU status is easily determined. Just check the country of origin.

The VAT status is easy enough to check automatically. Just use the script I pointed to in my last post.

Only apply a VAT rating for people in category 1 - calculate it before you submit the form to PayPal or any other processor. If the VAT registered test fails don't accept the order until they check the VAT ID or remove it.

All of this can be automated by a script on the order page so you don't generate unnecessary paperwork and delivery can be automatic.

To be able to offer this service he would need to be VAT registered too which means regular VAT returns so it can be done that way.

Alternatively put a VAT registration field on the form the purchaser fills at purchase in then apply the ex-VAT price if it is a VAT registered business ?

You can validate the VAT registration manually via: http://ec.europa.eu/...xation_customs/vies/ before dleivering the software or you can automate this before submitting the payment request. See https://www.servage....n-of-eu-vat-numbers/ and the full API details at http://isvat.appspot.com/

If you don't mind paying something try Xara Web Designer 7

There is a free trial version.

I am not sure how efficient to coding is but you can do some really nice things such as wrapping text around irregular shapes.

There are also some demo/tutorial videos at http://www.xara.com/...ner/tutorials-demos/

Do you issue a receipt for payment? If so another solution would be to issue a VAT receipt to EU businesses and they can claim back the VAT themselves - they do it all the time because many suppliers don't supply pre-tax.

As for not giving a chance, you're seriously assuming that people who type 1500+ words per hour on word processor are going to push cut or paste icons instead of using shortkeys.

Since when have shortcuts not worked in Word? Cut and Paste keys are the same as for every other window's app.

Back on track - windows 8:

Have you noticed that you can't use cut and paste between desktop and Metro apps!!! Really useful!

Joomla is very flexible for editing if set up right. Install JCE instead of the standard editor and make sure you make yourself an editing profile that gives you the ability to enter almost anything: plain text, javascript, html. css, php scripting ....

The system is extensible to with a massive number of plugins. If you want the greatest choice Joomla 1.5 probably still has the best selection though 2.5 support is growing fast and migration is not totally trivial so it is a good idea to check out what you need to use first and if possible go for 2.5.

The one think JCE can't do is import full Word documents with pictures and everything though you can select everything in the word document and Paste as Word - which strips out all the pointless crap in Word documents but tries to retain headings and paragraph layout.

If you want to add whole HTML pages you will probably need to add style sheets and scripts to the template file and strip out just the bit between the body tags to insert.

What is annoying is I already paid for Bryce 5, 6 and 7!

Are you using shopping cart software or just a single button?

If you are using a shopping cart system why not use a cart that supports tax rates and coupons, or supports different user gorups - public and business and have a discount on business transactions that reflects the no tax price?

done this

one fact is that there are much more advanced online visual editors out there and why couldnt wordpress just use one?

You could always install an alternative editor. Just do a search.

You can also use Microsoft Word to publish blog entries: http://wpsites.net/b...business-blog-posts/

If you want to enter HTML there is a built in HTML editor - just copy and paste the HTML code and make sure the image folder etc. is uploaded to  the correct path.

I have to ask if you want to upload documents to the web or preformatted HTML pages why use WordPress why not just build a static website based on pages generated the way you want?

I try to change the text fonts and all I can do is to insert tags (imagine doing so for a hundred of words!!!)

To be fair you should control fonts and sizes via style sheets rather than manually in the articles and pages. Try editing the template style sheet to get the fonts you want and then past your documents in as plain text.

I think Linux is doing the opposite of unifying - every time someone sneezes there is a new distro released. There isn't much logic to it.

Ironically I think Apple might well take up the desktop mantle .... especially as many software title are running on both. I haven't seen any evidence yet that Apple is trying to unify OS X and iOS (but then I haven't been looking).
941
No it is the full version - download and use when you like! Full Windows and Mac versions (future proofing against Windows 9!)

I don't want to reopen the can of worms but I really can't see why people are still upset about ribbons. Having been using then now for 5 years (!) I have to say I wouldn't want to go back to the bloody silly toolbars in Office 2003 and earlier. If you needed access to lots of features in older version of office you ended up with a whole bunch of cryptic toolbars that were hard to use and took up even more real estate. If you don't like losing the space just hide it!

Sure they seem to be adopting ribbons in places that perhaps they seem superfluous but then one of the things people complain about is lack of consistency!

Ineresting parallel the demise of Portal 2 vs. the demise of Windows desktop.

Ultimately it is MS's intention to get out of the home computer market altogether and move as many people as they can on to an annual purchase of tablets and phones like Apple is gradually doing.

I really don't think they have actually thought about productivity! Do they really think people are going to do desktop publishing, video editing or photography on a tablet?

Good to know - I don't use LibreOffice on a daily basis but I didn't think that was there last time I looked. Good to see it is developing.

OpenOffice seems pretty dead (been at 3.3 for a long time).
944
Don't think LibreOffice and OpenOffice can read XLSX ?

How about using recovery software on the USB stick?

You can select PC only in the downloads page.

Make sure you use an email address that you can check because they send the installation keys to the address you sign up to!

Not surprised that the servers are slow.

Note that as well as the main apps some of the modelling content is also free. Checkout Victoria 4.2 and Michael 4 for models to pose in scenes. There is also an Anime package (Anime Star Fighter) which includes a model and some props for free and another called EmotiGuy.

DAZ 3D now have most of their main apps available to download for free. In particular:

DAZ Studio 4 Pro
Bryce 7 Pro
Hexagon

are all free.

Note the product pages don't necessarily say they are free but when you add them to the cart they are $0.

You get full license keys by email.

Note if you ever fancy buying Carrara 8 (STD or PRO) from DAZ 3D then it is worth grabbing Bryce 7 Pro because you can upgrade for the price of a normal Carrara upgrade!

Great apps.

Have fun!

Ditto - Vista was a half finished mess on release (and IMHO Is not much better after 2 service packs). Windows 7 is now my preferred Windows (though I still use VMs of XP occasionally for some things).

I am not so sure that the Consumer preview is that far from the beta - they have to get a beta and a RC out pretty soon if they are going to hit the much leaked October release date.

There isn't much time to do a complete overhaul of the 'legacy' desktop - and given that they say it is legacy why would they want to? The description legacy is a strong suggestion that the desktop is on its way out as far as MS is concerned and I remain convinced that Windows 9 won't actually happen if MS can make Metro popular. I'd guess the next MS operating system after Windows 8 with be Metro 2 (or its equivalent) with all apps locked into the Metro interface.

Additionally they have made it pretty clear that the Start menu is gone - they have even killed the registry hack in the customer preview that allowed it to be brought back in earlier previews. To my way of thinking the whole Metro/Windows mashup is the biggest issue on the desktop. What the desktop needs is a proper desktop Windows with a Metro button that allows access to the Metro apps if you perversely feel the need of Metro (preferably one that can be hidden or disabled completely) - it is after all only a single window application running on the desktop (albeit a full screen single window application)!
