General Software Discussion / Re: Mother of all video player discussion threads
« Last post by lanux128 on January 31, 2011, 08:06 PM »
i noticed that CUDA is making some inroads into media convertors, e.g. Freemake Video Convertor. btw, is CUDA a synonym for GPU-accel?

speaking of CUDA, i have two GFXs that comes CUDA-ready (GeForce 9800 GT and GeForce 8600 GT) but didn't enable it.

Below is the current build with working save to .ini, or registry options. The default action is to save nothing anywhere in the interest of portability.
 (see attachment in previous post)

this version works well on my netbook (WinXP SP3), nice work!

i find that KMPlayer is able to handle all the files i throw at it but then i don't come across much variety in video files. with KMPlayer around, i no longer even install the codecs for quicktime, realplayer and etc.

Some credits heading your way. Thank you very much indeed for that!

And I owe the X2Net crew an apology…

thanks for the credits, i was just lucky.. but i feel the pain of committing data to a random software that later disappears/abandoned without any alternative.

General Software Discussion / Re: Photo managers with face recognition?
« Last post by lanux128 on January 30, 2011, 12:58 AM »
tbh, i'm not a big believer of these type of software, as i have some apprehension over exposing my pictures/music/etc to software that modify data. however having said that, i am keen to know if there any good programs out there that could change my mind.

as for face recognition, Picasa has had a headstart since versions that supported it came out back in 2008. also having the advantage of being backed by Google means that future updates are more likely to be guaranteed.

Living Room / Re: Choosing what movie to watch

It is a TV series that was aired on HBO for five years. Some critics hailed it as "the best show ever on television". It's basis is generally on the same book that the TV series "Homicide: Life on the Streets" was based on. Same author involved in the screenplay...

sounds like a good premise for a tv drama, too bad it has gone under the radar over for more publicity hungry series like Lost, Heroes, etc.

iirc zonealarm had something like that too. a big button that 'locks-down' all traffic but i can't recall it was only internet traffic or local network as well..

in any case, disabling all network is quite straight-forward, check out this thread.

? hotkey to disable/enable nic

Living Room / Re: Binary Registry Keys.... Editable? Readable? How?
« Last post by lanux128 on January 24, 2011, 11:10 PM »
BTW the fact that the deleted key is recreated but keeping the bad window size and placement indicates that this data is being retained elsewhere. Otherwise the program restart would have no way to "know" about that bad size and placement info. Correct? I wonder where the hell else they store it? Evernote support isn't talking.

yes, we can confirm that this is a bug for Evernote to fix. as you mentioned, the app can save its location into the registry. but the "data" might not be in the proper order, for all we know the width/length of the window might be inverted with the x,y co-ordinates. just a hunch..

on another note, luckily you found a workaround with WinSize2.  :)

« Last post by lanux128 on January 24, 2011, 10:27 PM »
Alas, no joy yet. Shut down Evernote after setting the desired window placement and size, deleted the entire WindowPlacement key, opened Evernote and it's still tiny and off screen.

sounds like a bug in the pre-release. a bug that causes the program not to read/write from/to the registry at all.

try the following to reconfirm.
1. Shut down Evernote after setting the desired window placement and size.
2. Delete the entire WindowPlacement key
3. Open Evernote and repeat #1
4. Open regedit to see if the key is re-created.

just an idea, instead of editing the registry key, why not delete it (after backing up) and start Evernote to see if the window placement functions normally?

« Last post by lanux128 on January 23, 2011, 11:45 PM »
nice, it works here. but then you wanted feedback.. :) so here goes:

1. since the app deals with photos, how about the preserving the timestamp to be the same as original.
2. i feel lazy and want to use the scroll wheel on the slider to resize the images

just some thoughts.

there is a minuscule update where they bumped the version to 8.0.555.1 and since it contains security patches, might be a good idea to update as well.

UPDATE
18.01.2011 - Securityupdate. Version changed to 8.0.555.1

DC Gamer Club / Aurora (PC Indie Game) Free for a limited time
« Last post by lanux128 on January 18, 2011, 07:07 AM »
came across this indie game which is free for a limited time (normally $5). not sure though when the promotion ends. Note that this game requires both .NET Framework 4 and XNA Framework 4.0.

A little bit of info about Aurora from the website:
Aurora is an abstract, essentialized, and simplified real-time strategy game.

You have only one type of unit to command and only one type of order to give those units. You and your opponents start the game with equal resources. Quick reflexes will get you nowhere. The only path to victory is through clever strategy.

Aurora features a slow, floating feel and gorgeous minimalistic graphics. The entire world pulses to the rhythm of ambient music, and the player’s actions evoke sounds that smoothly coalesce into melody.

This game is meant to provide a relaxing, cerebral experience. Every action has its reaction, and every option has its costs. Aurora is a game in which your choices matter.

Can the results be formatted exactly like this? - Nov 15, 2010 02:43 PM

this snippet should do it. just append it to nudone's script and type 'qdt' to get the date/time format as you wanted.

Code: Autohotkey [Select]
  1. ::qdt::
  2.    FormatTime, TimeString,,MMM dd, yyyy HH:mm tt
  3.     Send %TimeString%
  4. Return
948
this is quite promising.. i like the fact that no uploads are necessary, therefore your whole collection is like a shared folder which you can access remotely. this guarantees that there will be no sync problems such as if you were to upload and try to keep your files updated. and as Deozaan noted you can get your own sub-domain for as little as €10.
