Welcome to the site Tyler
RPG Boardgame sounds good to me -- but could you elaborate a little on what you mean by "RPG Boardgame" -- personally RPG games are too open ended for me, and i prefer the structure of board games.. Is that what you had in mind or?

General Software Discussion / Re: Best (free?) Sandbox?

My inclination is to always prefer using a full virtual machine software for testing things (VmWare, VirtualBox, VirtualPC, etc.).

It would be nice to hear about online activities people use to interact with long distance friends or partners.  Anyone know of any good activities?

Some very good suggestions about the help file, cmpm.  I will try to put a revamp of it on my todo list.
I've also made a ton of screencasts but it would be great if someone could make a nice gentle tutorial one.

Can I group selected items (several objects) into one object in screenshot capture?
I'm afraid not.  What I always suggest to people who need to do SERIOUS object editing on their screenshots is to use a professional image editor and configure it within Screenshot Captor so it's easier to launch on files.

I think I'd rather have a higher powered desktop-cpu class machine that I could maybe also use as a NAS..

Thanks for posting this -- the Atwood post about why the naive sorting fails was a great read -- and surprised me.

« Last post by mouser on July 10, 2013, 10:49 PM »
It does work on Windows 8.. An update is planned but I've been very slow writing it for a variety of reasons.  It's not quite as useful on a multi-core windows 8 machine as it is on an older single-core machine.

OK let's get this fixed this week -- don't let me forget!

Can I ask you to email me ([email protected]) so I can have you test any fix attempts before I release to the public?

Screenshot Captor / Re: Update Portable but keep configuration

Welcome to the site DEtrieZ.

Just unpack the new portable zip file on top of your existing directory -- the portable zip file does not contain any file that would override your current settings.
(Having said that, 99% of the time the updates have only changed the exe so most of the time you can just copy over the new exe).

The beautiful thing about modern sd/flash memory card based video cameras is that you can get cards that can hold 24hrs of video.. wheras in the old days the best you could hope for was a big box of tapes that you had to change every 2 hours.

Except for when it comes to me, it seems......

Sorry Tinman, I jumped the gun.. I think my bias is always to criticize the longtime dc members when i see the insults flying -- mostly because i expect that the more time you spend on DC, the more you can be expected to know the protocol.

I would also call for a bit of respect from the other side.  The post was written with pejoratives (hopeless churl) in it also, which could have prompted the response, even if two wrongs don't make a right

fair enough -- i stand guilty of skimming Cobble's post and should have called him to task as well for not being respectful and arguably starting the insults.

on this forum we expect everyone to be treated with respect.

Tinman, please don't attack people because of their views.

In this world full of companies paying people to post on their behalf, it's fair to ask people if they are affiliated with a company.  But this is a diverse forum and people are entitled to hold different views and shouldn't be made to feel uncomfortable for posting them.

This is especially true when a poster takes the trouble to post links and facts that explain and justify their position.

Even if CobbleHillGuy was affiliated with Adblock, he would be entitled to post his views on this thread -- though we would ask him to make clear his relationship with the company.

Newsletter for July 9, 2013
"Codename: Summer Slowdown"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Greetings readers.  I've just returned to Illinois from a two-week family vacation in Florida, and it's already time for another newsletter.  Everything seems to slow down a bit during the summer so this month's newsletter is a little shorter than normal, and I don't have any big announcements to make.  Hopefully you'll still be able to find a few posts that are of interest.

2. User-to-User: Your Input Requested

We love nothing more than having interesting discussions on our forum -- and we love when new people participate in the discussions.  In each newsletter we try to highlight a few topics that we think might interest casual readers and that are good candidates for making your first post.

3. Member Reviews, Projects, Software Releases, and Announcements

We love to keep up with projects that our members are working on, and hearing what our forum members think of software they use.  If you're working on something interesting -- let us know!

4. Software Discussion

The Software Discussion section is one of the most active areas of the DC forum; some of the more interesting posts since the last newsletter are listed here.

5. Website Discoveries, Debates, Essays, Discussions

What's new in cyberspace? What exciting new sites have been discovered by forum members?  What's the current hot topic and debate? Read on to find out...

6. Entertainment and Humour

Time for a break -- check out these fun websites and videos!

7. Developer's Corner

This section highlights some discussions that might be relevant for not just for coders and developers, but also people interested in entrepreneurial issues.

to have a link that allows to read all his post at once

Everyone has that; visit a user's profile page and look for the link "Show posts".
9244
Maybe $300-$400?
9245
Either way.  Wouldn't mind building.
9246
Agreed, a thread in the living room would seem most fitting.

I do find the idea of an indicator under the user's forum avatar indicating that the member has passed on, quite touching.. It conveys the fact that their spirit is still with us here virtually, just in a different form.

Living Room / Why you should record video of the everyday people in your life
« Last post by mouser on July 09, 2013, 08:00 AM »
I wanted to post about an experience I had recently that surprised me.

About 25 years ago, the year before i went to college, i bought a video camera and spent the next couple of years recording a lot of video of everyday life.  Mostly i would just set up the camera in the corner and let it record various things.  Sometimes just sitting around talking, sometimes parties, etc.

I hadn't watch the recordings in decades but recently watched many as I transferred the tapes to DVD.

I was stunned by the experience of hearing the voices and seeing the video of these places and people from my past.

It is amazing how clear the memories become of the people and places when aided by a bit of video, and how quickly it transports you back in time to those days, and how much information comes back to mind when looking at these videos.

One thing that I experienced when viewing these videos is how little interest i had for the "events" that were recorded -- the "performances".. Instead what I really appreciated was just the moments spent having an everyday conversation with old friends and family members -- to experience the normal everyday conversations and personalities.

I know everyone has a video recording feature on their phones -- but I encourage you (especially those of you who are still young) to consider buying a video camera and setting it up to record some long periods of just everyday normal living, with your friends and family.. As boring as it might be to watch now, in 30 years those boring moments may become the most precious valuable things you can imagine.

What do you say folks, should we extend this to 60 days?
Who else wants to report in?

I spent 2 weeks on vacation but managed to eat relatively healthily -- and I'm ready to resume the challenge.
