General Software Discussion / Re: SelfImage: The open-source hard disk imaging utility
« Last post by tomos on September 21, 2008, 01:43 PM »
Thanks, 40hz! I'll take a look at Clonezilla. I've considered Acronis, but hoping to find something that's free...

# well, there's DriveImageXML, I used it for a short while - did a restore to a second partition (maybe not a true test but it worked)
# here's another but I dont know anything about it - Irestorer - far as I remember it's based on DriveSnapshot (which I think is well thought of here) but cant find a homepage for it (Irestorer) so not sure
# I cant remember third - maybe it's just my dream one :p

I think problem with free is doesnt normally do incremental/differential imaging

40hz!
true image interface is one of my pet bugs ;D as in bugs the $§%& out of me (for manual imaging at any rate: in spite of being able to save a "default" "backup" I have to click SEVENTEEN times if I want to add a comment & I'm still not sure do I need to change the selection to the last increment saved in order to make a new incremental image, so I do it anyway - it's just another click after all :))

Now, why they don't all have "Evernote" checked is confusing to me.  They were all entered in the Evernote grid so they should have it checked automatically when the item is created.  Actually, I'm noticing that all the top level items have "Evernote" checked and the lower level items do not.

that is default behaviour - this way you get to see the parent items & can expand as you wish
I know Armando works differently but I can never keep up with him ;)

So, please, can you explain why it functions this way?  What's the point of Full Hierarchy?
also curious :)
(I use full hierarchy all the time myself - to the extent I cant remember what the others for!)

It keeps hiding those items whenever I restart SN.  Why?  It's not doing it for other items.

is there any difference between these & other items ? - especially with regard to the source field

edit/ hmmm - What's that top of the window  looks like advertising, very strange (screenshot made using minicap/FARR combination, FF was behind, tried again & was normal but will leave it here - nothing to do with Notebox I dont think)
BTW - it's portable

The core idea is to have a program that creates a larger version of this image encompassing a smaller version of this grid, encompassing an even smaller version of this grid with the end result aiming to have a way to not only prioritize but also segment the different items that are to be included in this concept.

Notebox disorganiser is in this direction at any rate - never have used it properly (& that a couple years ago) so cant say more

I don't think Notebox Disorganizer has been mentioned so far.  It's aimed at writers, and is truly weird.  Here is part of a third-party review:

No, seriously, you should check out NoteBox Disorganizer:
It's an amazingly useful program.

NoteBox Disorganizer is tailor-made for quickly jotting down notes and
ideas, organizing those notes and ideas, combining selected notes into a
document, and exporting that document for publication. It's truly my
favorite writing program, and I've tried pretty much everything out
there. Here are some of the things that make NoteBox Disorganizer so
outstanding:

* Notes are kept in a spreadsheet-like grid that is easy to understand
and navigate. And that means all your notes are spread out in plain
sight; nothing is hidden away in a database or lost in an outline
"tree."

* It's possible to name each column, so you can easily categorize your
notes under the columns where they belong. Have a note that belongs
under more than one category? Clone it! Change a clone, and that change
is reflected in all of the others.

* It's also possible to name each *row,* so you can lay out a book's
structure before you even start writing.

[...]

I love the side-by-sideness of all this, which gives me a sense of
overview, organization, and control that I don't get in any other
program.

* If you need finer "granularity" in categorizing notes, you can include
note ~keywords in the text (and keep an alphabetical list of those
~keywords) and then do a "bounded" search for them. In Boolean terms,
that's an "And" search, which finds notes that include all of the
specified ~keywords. Don't want to fuss with ~keywords? You can still
use a bounded search to find notes that contain several terms.

I seem to have deleted the Journal grid (I tend to do that for the grids I don't use, I know, bad habit from the old days).

You probably dont have it cause your file is old - mine doesnt, it was introduced since I created my file

So how can I recover my lost items?  There are a lot of them.  If possible, I need to search and find all items that are NOT shown in any grids, and then assign the Evernote grid to them all.  Repair didn't work.
you probably know this already,
but either the items, or their parent (or some item higher up the hierarchy) must have the source field ticked/filled in order to show in a grid.

I'd be a bit wary of Spyware Terminater - a friend of mine had an infected but working laptop. Scanned with Spyware Terminater and deleted whatever it recommended - that was the end of that system - unfortunately I dont have any more details but was there at the time so it's not just a story.

I suppose with any security programme you gotta be careful not to just click yes to whatever it recommends ...

Major changes are:

    * Show hyperlinks of lineage items on the status bar
    * Show siblings in the properties pane
    * Filter as you type
    * Portable!  8) :-*

I'm having fun with the various links to "relatives" of the current item:

SQLnotes49a.png

[edit] removed incorrect info about search grid [/edit]

This is really nice :-*  I havent even tried out filter as you type yet, more fun

DC Website Help and Extras / Forum Guidelines - subjects to avoid?
« Last post by tomos on September 12, 2008, 03:09 PM »
am I correct in thinking Religion as well as Politics is a subject to avoid in the forums here ? (says he raising both topics :o *)

If yes I would like to suggest that atheism be included as well as a subject to please avoid - there is a lot more tolerance of it which I can well understand (probable majority?). But I dont find it acceptable that atheism is sometimes flouted in a way that people here would pounce upon if it was some religous person knocking science for example (or atheism for that matter)
-
it's just about being fair as far as I can see.
I'm not suggesting any regulation or anything (naturally not :)) - just want to raise awareness of it & say what I think about it.

* so if the topics are taboo we cant discuss them here - only discuss whether we can discuss them :P
