Sorry for the delay, I've been in vacation mode.

Unfortunately, I don't know. I spend most of my time with the backend systems, and really don't have very complex needs for the interface. I'm actually currently trying to figure out a new Windows 8 phone...which seems to have some rather interesting new restrictions on what I can do with my contacts. I suspect I'm doing something wrong, but have as of yet not ascertained what exactly that is.
The WP8 should be really good with contacts, the best I've seen among iOS, Android, and Windows.  It can use the facebook, linkedin, and custom Windows live contacts while merging (linking) them properly.  Pretty slick.  What is your problem exactly?

The weird thing is that those nice services are only available on the WP8 phone, and on the desktop browser login version.  If you try it with Outlook, android, ios, etc. those links will not work and instead you will only get the custom windows live contacts (things not tied to other services, usually numbers entered in the phone manually).  I wonder if your issue is related to that.

Post New Requests Here / Re: So, about wallpaper changers...
« Last post by superboyac on December 25, 2013, 12:12 AM »
Hey there .o/

I have a kinda specific request, for after trying various wallpaper changers I can't find the one that perfectly meets my needs.
It seems simple (at least from a user's point of view) yet from all the programs I've tried, all miss at least two of the following features :
- randomly chooses a picture from a folder (and its subfolders) to set as wallpaper and repeats the process after a user definable delay
- provides good quality picture resampling¹, keeping aspect ratio no matter what, including support of PNG files ; I don't mind if that requires another freeware (such as IrfanView) to be installed
- can be told to suspend its action if some specific process (in fact any one from a user definable list) is running²
- stay "simple": I don't need such things as automatically get the pictures from social networks, rating pictures or dozens of options...
- be freeware? :D

I took a look at several threads around here (such as https://www.donation...ndex.php?topic=210.0 and https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=1008.0 ) and it seemed that probably could be done by modifying aCkRiTe's AutoHotKey script (which unfortunately I don't feel able to do).

So, does anyone know of a program that does what I want, or can make one? Please? ^^'

¹: because Windows 7's method, as well as many freewares out there, make very ugly artefacts on smaller pictures that didn't have any before upscaling them to the monitor's size, even though it would seem to be common sense to resize before converting to jpeg
²: because some older games such as the first Diablo (and most likely the first StarCraft, though I don't play this one) don't seem to like the wallpaper changing at all when using Windows 7, and I think killing explorer.exe before playing is not an acceptable option :p

To quote some of Wallpaper Master features that match your request:
Change wallpaper in order, in shuffle mode, or randomly according to rating.
Very high quality resizing of images to fit the screen optimally and keep their aspect ratio.
Skip a cycle if CPU load is too high (useful for when playing games). [PRO feature, $18]
Uses very little resources.
I think this is your answer.  It's not free, but cheap and worth it.

I went on a fairly OCD wallpaper changer software search recently (in the last couple of years).  I forgot the name of it, but I found the perfect one that had all the options and everything.  I need to remember the name...

got it!

Wallpaper Master Pro.  Very complete and awesome.

Edited to add: It also irritates me that we tend to only see DonL around here when he's looking to hawk his goods.

I would personally ask that people are careful with statements like this.  Trying to get discounts for the community, one of the selling points is the ability to reach many potential customers.  Statements like this make it harder than it already is to secure discounts.  Civility and welcome whenever anyone comes to the forums would seem to make the community more welcoming, and the attraction of helping the community much more inviting.
I like DonL.  He has excellent customer support and from what I've seen has always been pretty friendly and honest.  I don't blame him for doing some marketing like this, it's pretty harmless.  I use both Dopus and XYplorer, and I'm not offended, lol!  Let's have a little friendly competition.  If MMA fighters can hug after fights, so can developers.  :-*  :-*  :P

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Ad Muncher End of 2013 sale
« Last post by superboyac on December 20, 2013, 04:18 PM »
Ad Muncher has not been updated in almost a year and a half (July 2012). Murray, their lead developer, has not been active on the forums since March. Any emails that come out from him keep pushing his new "leap touch" initiative. Jeff (list maintainer) keeps advising that they have no idea when 5.x will be ready and that it will be done "when it is done". Additionally, IE11 and Windows 8.1 support will not be ready until at least 5.0, according to their forums. So...yeah, make of that what you will.
Probably experiencing unmet expectations financially.  THis started a while back when he began getting all tricky with his subscription pricings, being very unclear about what is "free" and what is not, what he means by "lifetime" and what others interpret it as.

Stoic, I have some more Exchange questions for you:

1) Can Exchange import vcards with photos?
2) Can Exchange export vcards with photos?
3) Can Exchange use vcards from Mac Addressbooks (apparently the format is different from regular vcard)

Thanks!

found this:
Bring all of your contacts together in one place:  People’s professional networks span many different places.  You will have the ability to enable users to bring their contacts in from other networks so that they have all of their information in one place.  Exchange will even find the same person across networks and consolidate their information into one contact card, avoiding duplication and multiple contact cards with different information.
OK..this is what I don't get.  The "People" feature that's on the exchange online system is good, in that it syncs with different services.  but that information can't be shared on the phone (android) OR even desktop Outlook.  So how does this help me except for when I'm using the service through the desktop web access through the browser?

Living Room / Re: Migrating from Google Gmail.com to Microsoft Outlook.com

GMail is quirky in its approach (like POP doesn't work the way it is supposed to) but IMAP seems to work fine.

The only real issue with GMail is privacy but then ANY email service is hosted by a provider somewhere (even if you pay for your own server at a data centre) so as far as I can see GMail are relatively honest about what they do (in their despicable way) - MS have just been despicable in the past and resisted being honest until caught - and anyway just because they say they don't automatically gather info from email and document contents today doubtless at some point when no one is looking there will be tiny change in T&Cs to allow them to do what they like.

Apple are probably worse than both but who really knows - just my opinion.
so for email services, which of the big three would you use?  for some reason, MS still has a better reputation for privacy than google, but why?

Great googley-moogley! "Catholic School Cursive" or "Nun Script!"

I always wondered if it had an official name. It's what the Dominican Sisters dunned into our heads and hides when I was an innocent and helpless child. The public schools taught the similar but equally ugly Palmer Method. Which was probably one reason why the parochial school system I was in opted for something 'different.' (Those were different times! No love lost between the public and parochial school systems back then. And an almost ridiculously strict separation of Church and State - on every level - was considered both good and necessary by most Americans up until Regan.)

Ballpoint pens? Ungainly cursive alphabets? Using a pencil for anything other than calculations, shopping lists or marking wood for cutting? The very idea! My grandfather was having none of it. We all were required to learn and practice Spencerian script at home. And the only pen suitable for use by a "lady or gentleman" was an ink pen. His one concession to modernity was the fountain pen. (Even he was happy to abandon dip pens and inkwells.)

 ;D
hot dang man!  lol.

I'd guess it's this, but SB will have to confirm:
http://en.wikipedia..../Global_Address_List

Correct, and yes the Exchange online does have one. It's a full fledged Exchange server with a web based configuration interface, and full PowerShell support (from LM).
hmmm....I'm really having a hard time seeing where these options are.  Let's say I have a csv file of addresses.  I want to use it to make a GAL, but I can't find that option anywhere.  I'm really having a hard time with all this gui oversimplification windows has done with windows 8 and wp8.  it's too much.  too much white space, not enough buttons.  But they still need the functionality, so they are hiding everything in the weirdest places.  is it really that much of a gui nuisance to have a little menu button somewhere that expands all the options in one place?  is that really going to turn the entire market away from windows to apple?

IIRC the csv import option requires PowerShell. Yes it a bit intimidation (CLI...) but it's really not that bad. If I can find the procedure in my notes from the last job (had to pull all sorts of shit from everywhere), I'll post them here later.
ok ok...I'm warming back up to this solution.  Stoic, I'm trying to come up with a way where, say, Im running a small business and want to deploy android phones.  I want the phones configured like a factory line...like putting an image on a drive and then going with it.  So I'm trying to find the perfect combo of apps, services, etc.  the most difficult has been the contacts so far.  android contacts are klunky.  and i want it secure, corporate style, which means ms exchange or your own hosted version.  but you're convincing me of online exchange more and more, and now 40 also...so i want to make that work.

Global Address list is NOT available offline for mobile devices (Windows Phone, Android, iPhone...)
http://community.off...ums/172/t/10181.aspx

If that's true, that's it.  I'm out.  No more google, no more microsoft, no apple.  this is too much.  if everyone wants their ecosystem, they can go ahead without me.  Microsoft and their idiotic ecosystem that doesn't even play with their own products is the silliest one.

I'm off to check out owncloud's contact capabilities.

I'm thinking more and more about it...  becoming less and less enamored with google's offerings.
+1000 on that.  I'm currently trying to figure out how to minimize google services used on an android phone.  I know I need the gmail account, but I don't necessarily need the email or anything else.

If anybody is that sold on the Outlook experience (and has $4 a month to spend) it might be worth looking into Microsoft's Exchange Online offering. That gives you email hosted through Microsoft's Exchanger server cloud services. It's pretty powerful and compelling since Outlook doesn't reach anywhere near its real potential until it's wedded to an MS Exchange backend.
Stoic turned me on to this in the other thread.  I don't have a terribly good idea about the power and potential that Exchange offers.  Can you give some more details?

Is it possible to make a GAL with that service?

with so few people, you ARE a good candidate for some of the more unusual boutique forum software, and smf may be overkill.

and you may benefit from not having to host it yourself.  maybe something like Disqus?
oh ok, i didn't consider those.  yeah, I'm down.  As long as the essential features are there: inline media, searching, threaded view options.  I'll check it out thanks.

I want to create a private forum to do research with friends and stuff (no more than 5 people or so).  I want to quickly set it up on my site, a la softaculous or something like that.  I also want to use tapatalk or something similar for mobile use.

What is a receommended software?  My favorite forum software is this one here, just for my personal preference.

Tapatalk compatible forums:
Q: Which forum system does it currently support?
phpBB3, vBulletin, xenForo, IPBoard, Simple Machine, MyBB, bbPress, Kunena and Vanilla are supported. Other forum system might also support Tapatalk with plugins developed by third party developers using Tapatalk API.

Thanks for the details Stoic, you are really helping me get through this.

I didn't know that about Touchdown.  I'll try using the stock account manager and see if I like it better.  I was under the impression that only touchdown could do exchange.

I'm also going to try playing around with pictures and Outlook this weekend, in conjunction with some Mac stuff.

After reading your details, perhaps this is the best method of management:
1) get all the contacts from the social networks exported.  I would probably use the Mac and vcard export for this, since that would be the only way to do it in one shot.
2) import all these into Outlook.  Clean everything up.
3) Sync this to whatever Microsoft allows and get it on your phone.  From here on, manage everything with just your phone and outlook.  for new linkedin or facebook contacts, periodically update with a export/import.

That seems to be the best plan so far.
