Sorry if I was unclear... My problem with chm is that you can only... read them. But I like to annotate and bookmark anything I read. Hence, my desire to have a chm reader which allow bookmarking or annotating.  :)
902
I don't really like chm files. Probably because I'm ill equipped to deal with those -- [edit] can't annotate or bookmark anything [/edit]. Do some of you use/know special readers with light annotating features (eg : bookmarking and highlighting)?

Here's some of what I found on the DC forum about CHM editors and/or readers (not always perfectly related with my problem -- reading, bookmarking, etc, and not necessarily "complete authoring"):

how do you write a .chm file?

A decent CHM viewer for Windows
Help authoring
Help Authoring Gem (cool software, but only chm creator, really... absolutely not a reader... Well, I don't think so)

Wow. Interesting. Not exactly for managing/organizing my photos, but worth the look , certainly...

There seems to be a free version of silkypix too? Not sure I understand... not crystal clear on their website.

Thanks Tom! I'll have a look at it.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: How to safely erase content from CH+S's database?

OK, thanks mouser.
Being able to encrypt the database would have been a good option too, but, unless I'm mistaken, I guess it's not possible... right?

I realized I have some sensitive info there... How do I permanently and completely erase it. Just by erasing the database completely ?  :)

I agree! And refilling the cartridge (toner from ebay) is very easy. Cheap printer that works very well.

Am starting to look at image management etc. programs...

Lightroom seems a bit too much for me, but for those interested, here's a nice review : http://arstechnica.c...ghtroom-2-review.ars

My cheap samsung ML-2010 prints until I can barely read what's printed.  ;)

In these totalitarian circumstances, I'd certainly think twice before taking my laptop with me on vacation!  :o I'd take the risk only if I had absolutely NO choice to bring it with me (special applications, no computers easily available where I'm going, etc.). And then I'd probably replace the hard drive with another one containing nothing but a strictly functional Linux distro, send my data in advance by mail to where I'm going, or just download the necessary data (encrypted) from a web to be able to work. This is not ideal, but feasible.

There's also the liveCD option. But it's not as easy as one would probably think... There are not many internet cafés around that will allow you to reboot their computer with a live CD ( :tellme: ) , and, depending on where you're traveling, using someone's (or whatever) computer might be not be an easy option either! Still... carrying a liveCD (or USB stick) with everything you need, is not a bad idea as it could be useful. It could.
912
But if you wanted to carry your data with you in a non-obvious way, I would suggest grabbing an 8GB MicroSD flash card - encrypt your data, put it on it, hide it - I very much doubt that they would be able to find it with a cursory search or even using the airport x-ray machines.  Don't carry the reader, otherwise they'll know what to look for - just buy a reader at your destination.

That's what I did on my last trip.  I put the card at the bottom of my bag and it got un-noticed. :)
But this was just to be used in extreme case... As I didn't have a laptop with me anyway (all these stories got me a bit nervous).

I still wonder what the people who absolutely MUST travel with their laptop do...? Just Risk loosing it? Use mouser's strategy of buying 5 laptops...?  ;D Mailing is definitely a possibility, but an expensive one and not necessarily convenient one -- and soon, of  course, we'll learn that all computers sent by mail will be confiscated etc.
913
I realize that serious hackers could get access to my data.  I am only trying to block casual users and nosy people.

*Anybody* who can download a Linux Live CD (and you could read this too) will be to access your data. Not just the serious hackers.

So if, like me, you're not willing to encrypt everything, just set a login password (as you already did) to prevent your co-workers/colleagues, etc. from rapidly accessing personal stuff while you're away for brief periods of time, and encrypt only the files containing very very sensitive data.

But if you carry your laptop with you to trainings, etc., the best thing is definitely encryption if you want to protect a lot of sensitive info, personal stuff...

Nice -- entertaining, well written...  :)

Nice.

I saw that  Super Flexible File Synchronizer is tagged as "cross-platform"and  I didn't know there was a Linux version! Anybody tried the beta?
916
I agree.

And I'd probably go further and say that even for Quark or Video editing, it probably doesn't matter much (or at all) whether you're using a mac or a PC.

[edit]Some "Mac writers" will swear by Scrivener and say that there's no PC equivalent... I couldn't say![/edit]

(If you use Sonar for audio, your audio needs are probably a bit more complex (and $$$) than mine... ;) )

General Software Discussion / Re: SQLNotes...what is it exactly?

The problem with the current is reliance on SQLServer as the database. Drupal use mySQL. SQLServer is expensive and hosting company tend to overload it, to save money

I see... Thanks!

Keepem coming guys  ;D

I like how the UI show what to type next. Ex when I type email the tip is email (message) (to contact)

yes this is something farr should have, some kind of hint about how to use the command.

I often wondered if clues could be given in the status bar at the bottom? That would work for plugins and aliases.

The Drupal page looks nice. Not sure about the fonts for "SQLNotes: The Next Generation Information Organizer" (size etc.) though... but, yes, I know it's just a test page.

I'm curious :  how will Drupal have an effect on availability and performance?

I guess it's not that bad, even if one's backing up to remote encrypted locations/volumes... With a little script.

What really bugs me is the absence of real imaging solution (ie : not sector by sector). One could use a container instead of encrypting a whole partition; I wonder how imaging software work with file-containers instead of encrypted partitions.

OK! thanks. I'll just try reinstalling without Mesa3D and see what happens.

Truecrypt's size limitations for containers/volumes (waaaay beyond your needs...) :
Q: What is the maximum possible size of a TrueCrypt volume?

A: The maximum possible size of a TrueCrypt volume is 8589934592 GB. However, due to security reasons, the maximum allowed volume size is 1 PB (1,048,576 GB), as the amount of data that is considered secure to be encrypted using a single key depends, among other factors, on the block size of the encryption algorithm. In addition, you need to take into account other limiting factors. For instance, file system constraints, limitations of the hardware connection standard and of the operating system, etc.

I'd be more worried about backup. It's the only reason why I'm not jumping on to the encryption bandwagon. I like backup jobs to be simple (otherwise I tend to procrastinate), and restoring to be bullet proof and simple too. Right now, it seems like a SUPER SLOW and not that simple or convenient process.

BTW : don't want to highjack this thread but... anybody with creative solutions for easy backuping of encrypted volumes and/or OS ? f0dder ? housetier ? :)

I don't care how good they think their product/service/whatever is - if they can't sound like a normal human being instead of a personal fitness trainer they've lost me before they've even begun.

 ;D

Do we have a name yet for these pretentious style presentations?

Ok, let's see... cranio ? Any ideas ?

Seems to work pretty well. Nice, very nice.

The interface is simple and efficient

2 questions :

- As it is now, my first CPU core is at 100% all the time (so 50% total). (laptop, Intel core duo, 1.8ghz). Is that normal ? (If yes, would it be possible to have the CPU consumption drop to 0 when the animations stops /between animations?)

- How do you switch between mesa and openGL ?

Thanks!
