Here you go tuxman! 40hz just posted a link to CSMenu in another thread, which gives you the classic start menu under Windows 7 (and Vista?).

Overall, 64 bit has been an awesome upgrade for me. On new hardware with enough RAM and video memory, the performance "hit" that you experience running a 32-bit program under a 64-bit OS is negligible in my experience AND you can install up to 16 exabytes of RAM! OK, so the reality is that you can't currently install or access anything near that (8 terabytes is the current limit, apparently), but still... 6, 8, 12 GB of RAM vs 3 to 3.5 under 32-bit. Even if your 32 bit programs can only access 2GB of your RAM on a 64 bit system, the OS still has plenty of RAM to play with.

+1 for Tag&Rename

I've tried a myriad of alternatives, FOSS and shareware, and Tag&Rename just "fits" for me.

Acronis has been brilliant for me. The only time I tried System Restore was under XP and it worked *OK* (think: So far, so good, but far from good!). I've not used System Restore under either Vista or Win7. Haven't used the built in system backup feature, either.

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Office 2010 discount

Quite right, Darwin. But later on, SoftMaker is continually updated, which Ashampoo is not.

My understanding is that the Ashampoo product can be updated by downloading the SoftMaker updaters, no?

Caveat: I've only every purchased/installed the SoftMaker releases.

Another option is to wait for Ashampoo's version as it is generally cheaper. The only difference, introduced with Office 2008, was the absence of Softmaker Basic from the Ashampoo version...

not the VM which will only work if you have Hyper V support in your CPU
are you talking about the Win7 virtual XP option - that's only in ultimate, isnt it? - I've read that you're as well off setting it up yourself anyways (in windows secrets I think)

It's in Enterprise and Professional as well... Setting it up yourself is fine, but you'll need a licensed copy of XP that you can activate on the VM. Of course, Win2k would likely do as well.

OT (a bit) - what settings are people using for the XP VM? I'm at default, which assigns 512MB of RAM. Performance is not brisk!

A version of True Launch Bar that is compatible with Windows 7 is in beta here: http://www.truelaunchbar.com/beta/

Free Launch Bar is here: http://www.freelaunchbar.com/

Also, I found that the latest full release (4.4) worked just fine under Windows 7 as well

regarding "tweakers", there really is only one: http://www.x-setup.net/

Except that it doesn't fully support 64 bit OS...  :(

The Vista/Win7 Start Menus take some getting used to, but I persevered and can't stand the Classic Menu now... and I spent my first year or so with XP in your shoes - running the Classic Menu because I didn't like the changes wrought in XP. Can't go back now.

However, to each his or her own! If your way "works" for you, great

The Search bar in Windows 7 Start Menu is a great app and file launcher - it's all I use now...

Hi Fidel - great job! I'd second mouser's suggestion about an alternative way to cancel the search (beyond hitting the "close" button). Also, the pdf previewing capablities are very nice and the results are very elegantly displayed. I love the white text on blue background

Hi Fidel - thanks for reminiding me about File Hound - I love that it runs as an exe (ie without needing to be installed) and the simple, intuitive interface. Very nicely done

peteg05 - note that their last blog entry includes a link to a version of IdeaMason that does not require activation, so you no longer need to worry about that (download the installer and if, in future, the website disappears for good you'll still be able to reinstall Ideamason).

I think one thing that hurt them was that there was very little/no development over the last year or so of the product's life, despite some bugs and problems that needed to be fixed.

On another note, one of the positives of my descent into old age is that I have no need to pay a premium to buy frequencies I can't hear anymore. Nature has now blessed me with mp3 ears.

;D That really resonates with me, as well. I like that, mp3 ears  8)

Cheers, guys

I've used Copernic, Filehand Search, X1/YDS, GDS, Archivarius, and dtSearch, and WDS. Under Vista (and now W7), I am running WDS. X1, Archivarius, and dtSearch were all brilliant under XP (though my main search engine was X1), but WDS is so tightly integrated in Windows now and it has now been developed to the point where it works really well, that I don't feel the need to install and setup anything else. Of course, this is likely due in large part to the fact that I really don't do much content searching anymore...

For Filename searchers, I've tried a slew of them as well, but found that I really didn't use them much with X1 or WDS installed.

Garboni - WELCOME! You'll fit right in here as many of us are fall into the same category. What makes this site so wonderful is that there are a lot of bona fide computer experts here who are VERY patient and VERY helpful.

miva2 - welcome to DC as well and good luck with your studies  :)

Stay, read, post and enjoy DC

EDIT: struck through extraneous word...

Hi n8ngrimm. Sorry if this comes off as condescending but I'm sincerely confused.

Where is the game?

It's about an article by the same title (link in OP)

What problems do these bloated pdfs cause you?

If you work with 1000's of them, they hog disc space. More frustratingly, though, if you need to e-mail them to others, you can quickly run into attachment size limits  >:(

And comments like your previous one don't go over too well here.

Perhaps after you've been here a little longer you'll start to show a bit more courtesy towards your fellow members; and hopefully develop a better appreciation for the social norms at Donation Coder?

I'm hoping that as it appears that Bamse is not a native English speaker he doesn't mean the brash way some of his remarks are coming off.

I was going to post in a similar vein (as did 40hz), but chose to take it as Innuendo has done - I hope he and I are right!

@Bamse - your tone does come off as confrontational and intolerant of others' views...

For a start, none of us would be frequenting this forum, would we?

Frequenting a forum? Heck, we'd still be picking up our phones and asking for an operator to place a call for us. ;D

---

BTW: It's "Hear! Hear!"

Ah, thanks for clarifying that! No doubt I'll be asking the same question the next time I want to use it, though  :-[

It's about time scientific advances and adventures were actually applauded - try living for a week without the scientific and technological advances you enjoy!!

Here, here (or is that "Hear, hear"? I'm never sure... ).

So I won't be trading places with anyone. I don't think my wife would approve. ;) (I got married this past May.) She's the reason I'm moving there, as she's doing her Ph.D. in Banking and Finance at Monash University.

Belated congrats on the nuptials

Regarding ISP's and speed - Koreans moan about it here, too (Canada). I gloat a bit when I tell them that its because our infrastructure underlying the internet is 100 years old and then I crawl off somewhere and feel privately very inadequate...

EDIT: I can't spell...

Hey - sounds like my kind of book, 40hz  Thanks for bringing it to my attention. If I can stay awake long enough to finish my current book, I'll order "How I Live Now" from the library  ;D
