hmm  :-[
I hadnt thought this "refresh" thing through at all
I had been thinking to reload the current folder (and subfolders, yes) but it sounds a lot more complex than I had thought ...
Yes, it is, mainly because Trout doesn't really work on a directory level; it cares about full paths.  However, I could envision an option where you could add a folder or folders that Trout would know to sync the list from.  Does that make sense?
yes,
that sound's good, as I say - if possible - you're the boss here so it's your call !!

tomos, from what I interpreted, it is exactly how InfoQube works.

Difference between it and tagging is minimal from the concept level. Where it differs is the user interface.

Faceted classifications would probably be more closer to spreadsheet and filtering but as the author said, if you don't know how to swim in the ocean of data, it is akin to searching for that one piece of tasty itsy bitsy bit of pork in a murky soup.
...

There's also the problem that many datas cannot be presented in one way especially for casual users. With faceted classifications you can at least get a more orderly overview of little datas because of all of the filtering potential it has. InfoQube being almost the most casual and efficient representative of this.

InfoQube's bastard child "spreadsheet/hierarchy" allows you to have many little items you would normally put in a spreadsheet and have it presented in a hierarchy or vice versa. The price is that you have to cut your brain in half and you have to expect people to know how spreadsheet programs work and how advanced tree-outlines work.

Paul, thanks for that, still not fully sure what "Faceted" is - but I get the gist I believe

Skwire, I missed the last few updates - only got to check this stuff out today
1) I tried F5 - no refresh happens (not an option in menu either?)
Hmmmm...I think I may have misunderstood your initial request.  I added an option to re-scan tags (thinking that was what you wanted).  I'm guessing now that you want an option where you can set a folder or folders to re-scan for new files, right?
yes,
I meant an option to rescan/refresh the folder, thanks

1) I'm wondering is there an easy way to refresh the current folder -
currently the only way I see is to reload it - (F5 would be a nice option to have)
2) another very minor thing is:
with playmode set to random could I dictate the first file to play?
3) could there be a column with just file name ?
Build 84 should cover all three of these points.  Please let me know.

Skwire, I missed the last few updates - only got to check this stuff out today

1) I tried F5 - no refresh happens (not an option in menu either?)

2) works !

3) column with filename didnt show at first (even though ticked on programme start) but showed then when I unticked & reticked it - there on second start as well so it's working.

and, I take the liberty of making a couple new requests :)

4) that it would remember position of columns on restart

5) another programme I use does a lovely "sideways" (over & back) scroll if I press Control key and scroll mouse wheel - do you think would that be possible here too ?

Dear tomos, I use XP.

me too lol
as I say it's going in a different direction - it's a programme that takes over the start menu in XP (& presumably vista too) & makes it much easier to navigate (using keyboard) and launch stuff etc.

General Software Discussion / Re: Looking for simple backup software
« Last post by tomos on January 27, 2009, 02:55 AM »
not familiar with this one but it seems to do #2 anyways

No Hands Backup (http://www.anderssoftware.com/) has a bit of a quirky interface but it does all the standard file-level backup ups (zipped or not, multiple versions or not, filters, schedule). For me it has one killer feature, you can associate a backup with a particular removable media (by serial number or label). That way I could tell my mum "just put the red usb key in the drive once a week" and NHB automagically detects that this particular USB key is in and asks "want to start the backup?" and then just does it (i usually get her to do it when i chat with her on the phone). I use it to run different backups on different DVDram disks, and on my external drive etc. It's a very nice feature.

« Last post by tomos on January 26, 2009, 05:23 AM »
another option which can be handy is
Ctrl++ to expand selected item (no plural there!)
Ctrl+- to collapse item

this will expand item to last expanded state, so if you repeatedly wanted the same particular sub-items expanded and not to get things too cluttered could be handy to use

yeah, have a look at the shortcut pages  :)  can be worthwhile cause UI is a bit behind at times

« Last post by tomos on January 26, 2009, 03:08 AM »
David,
are you familiar with the shortcuts:-
Ctrl+1   to   Ctrl+9
Ctrl+1 will "close" all items in grid (one "level")        Ctrl+9 will expand all items to the 9th level
Ctrl+Shift+1 [through to 9] will work likewise for selected item(s)

Depending on your settings (Grid>Filter applies to subitems), this will only show sub-items that are allowed by filters - i.e. it may not show all sub-items

Re
the problem with selecting a bunch of items and trying to show all sub-items via context menu (which would show all sub-items regardless of filter) -
I posted about that in IQ/SQLN forum [How to] show all sub-items for multiple items or whole grid? but havent gotten a response yet

well, I should have been (as often) clearer - I sorta meant "mini" speakers - like I have a set on other computer, sony - doesnt even say what ... what's a speaker measurement unit?!? ... but they're small - sound is grand (in a small room) but they cant handle any volume really but that's okay too -
As you say anyways at that price - I wouldnt be expecting to throw a party with them -
will look next time I'm in town anyways,
 thanks!

okay,
keeping this thread slightly off-topic :P
can anyone recommend a pair of speakers for 20 to 40$ price range - or even a brandname would do - I have no notion & didnt think it worth starting a new thread for it,
thanks!

can anyone explain "Faceted" classification to me?

the author of that article waffles on about it but it doesnt seem to quite penetrate fully to my brain

Faceted classification system An anti-organization, classification system comprised of items and independent Facets or Attributes and Attribute values.

Items can be thought of as object nouns or things (ie. a person, a document, a song, a message). Attribute values are adjectives or characteristics of the noun-items (ie. red, 56KB, 36 years-old) and Attributes describe the characteristics, provide them with specific semantics (ie. hair color, file size, age). A natural language statement such as "Bilbo has furry feet." might be stored in a Faceted system in the following way: The item Bilbo has Feet covering: Fur.

Items in Faceted systems are expected to be multi-faceted, to have a potentially unlimited number of Attribute: Attribute value pairs (ie. Height: 6 feet, Weight: 135 lbs, Age: 35 years-old, Gender: Female, Marital status: Single). This seems beyond obvious, but the fall out of multi-faceted items is that unlike their counterparts in Hierarchies, items in Faceted systems can live in more than one Attribute-based groupings (ie. Six foot tall people, 135lb-ers, 35 year-olds, Single people). Depending on the system, a single item could also belong to multiple Attribute values in the same Facet (ie. a song that is belongs to both the R&B and Hip-hop Genres). This is an item-centric way of describing Faceted systems.

maybe what I'm missing is a concrete example of this in practice (does it exist?), and,
the difference between this and tagging (?),
the author seems to indicate there is a difference but I may have glazed over by the time it was explained - I'm not knocking the article - I was fascinated but maybe I'm not used to working with ideas or the author isnt so good at explaining them or whatever..)

Oh my...I am in love with that scroll wheel on the logitech mouse.  I've set it so it's free-spinning (no-click) and it is scroll wheel HEAVEN!  That is just beautiful design.

good for you !

I've been checking out mouses (again) lately and I gotta say it really does my head in that they dont say clearly:-
This is a right-handed mouse. There is no left-handed version (or there is etc)

What percentage of people are left-handed - is it so small that they have to snub us every time we look in a shop-site, or even the Logitech site itself - I was looking at two mice there just yesterday and could find NO info as to whether there was a left-hander or not (and nowhere did I see: "just for right-handers" - so I could only tell from the photo)

[with apologies for very off-topic rant]

As with any job, IMNSHO, you should be judged by your ability to complete your assigned tasks in the time allotted. If you can do that while also spending time on Facebook, so be it.
I can agree with that but whole article sounds to me like "complaints of spoiled kids" who prioritize playing instead of working.
-fenixproductions (January 22, 2009, 03:39 PM)

actually I think it sounds like people who were into their work to the extent where one didnt have to worry about those things ("playing") - and I'm honestly saying that apolitically - I suspect it's the same with any campaign - cant you imagine the buzz, the enthusiasm - now they're getting the post campaign blues plus having to deal with MS LOL
still could be worse for them, they could've lost...

hi App
I'm back with "the [real] Boss" :D

is there any chance you could set it up so that after a break the the [Work Now] option has focus instead of the [Cancel] one ?

The Logic being:-
if I click Enter or spacebar as the Instant boss window flashes up it dissappears - either I dont see it at all, or I see it flash & think I better check that & continue what I'm doing & forget of course - but the problem is that it doesnt reappear at all.

If [Work Now] had focus I might "lose" a bit of time (if I dont actually see the Instant Boss window) but at least the window will reappear,
so I'll get reminded to work if I'm dossing or break if I'm working

tomos, no offense but when I skimmed the article, everything about anything had a negative in that site.
except presumably Chandler !?!
(btw. of course no offence taken)

but has anyone actually read the full article LOL (me not fully yet..)

I read the page 40hz recommended ComplexityIsInTheEyeOfTheBeholder
The article talked big ideas but the reality of the Chandler description there sounded not so earth shattering, but I suspect one would have to really use Chandler for a while to "test" it properly (says he who hasnt even looked at it properly yet..)

I notice myself getting disillusioned with hierarchy - never worked for tasks/ToDo lists for me, but also get bogged down in complex project hierarchy.
That's to do with me more than the software - to be honest I didnt fully understand some stuff in the article but gather they saying to avoid "deep" hierarchys at any rate

Tagging I'm wary of.
I'm using more & more the option to show an item in different places (multiple-parents) in IQ/SQLNotes - very helpful, I guess you could say it's a cross between tagging &, and ... not tagging ? LOL

Well that's the thing. If you add too many keywords, you're never sure whether you added something to "to_listen" or to "music"

If you added both then you have to always add both for consistency.

which is also why article not so positive about tagging (just btw)
