Living Room / Re: The conflict of interest that is Google
« Last post by J-Mac on November 20, 2010, 11:53 AM »

Another example of the erosion of basic freedoms in in how current legislation is on the table to make it illegal for US residents to grow food or use seeds that their gardens produce.

You pretty much need to be brain-dead to not understand that making it illegal for people to grow food is bad. But that is what is happening right now...

I just read the proposed Senate bill and I cannot find any language at all that would forbid private gardens or forbid people to grow their own food. The thought is laughable!

I did notice that the site you linked to does not have any links at all to the bill itself; only to their own rants and the rants of like-minded sites. What is that site - a radical activist gardening site?  ;D

Pure silliness!

Anyone read the rest of this year's columns/articles on Ben Edelman's site? Most would probably get a somewhat different opinion of Google after reading them. The Google Toolbar issues, Ads labeling, etc. Fascinating.

Thanks!

Living Room / Re: iPod - tell me why I should buy one
« Last post by J-Mac on November 17, 2010, 12:08 AM »
I had a Creative MP3 player a couple of years ago: much cheaper than iPod; I could put just about any music on it that I wished, purchased & downloaded, my own ripped CDs, etc. Only problem was that the battery started lasting less and less hours each time I used it until it was impossible to keep it charged. However iPods were also having battery issues then and theirs weren't replaceable at all. Anyway I don’t use one now.

Thanks!

OH, this gets even better every time I see something about it. How's this: The "foreign nationals" that these grifters claimed were out to get this idiot included: the Illuminati, Polish pirates, Roman Catholic Opus Dei initiates, an Indian military operative..... and a photo with President Obama! And the amount is $20 million now?

 ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

I use DOpus - it simply opens a pane in my two-pane UI and it works just like any other directory. Pretty sweet!

The funny thing is I was pondering the subject of "logic" just yesterday and today [Cue Twilight Zone theme].  After some cogitation on the issue, I was struck that "logic" was illogical.  :o  Unfortunately, my post would be about twice the length of your missive, so I will try to distill it and get back to you.  In the meantime, here is a smattering...

If...
A = B
and
B = C
then
A = C

... see anything wrong with this?

OK, I am definitely NOT schooled formally in logic or philosophy, but I do remember seeing this before - isn't that called syllogistic logic or syllogistic reasoning, something like that?

Thank you.

If its not a clicky one, anyone know of any good ones that are?

Jeff Atwood  did a recent blog article about keyboards.  You might be interested in reading his suggestions and the many suggestions that I imagine are in the comments:

Hank, are you using the Freestyle KB with a Marble Mouse? I had only considered using that with the Contour Roller Mouse.

I've used two of Logitech's Bluetooth meeces in the past and had lag difficulties with both. Connection is momentarily interrupted and the mouse stops for a split second or so. IIRC it was a pretty widespread problem and they stopped marketing BT mice altogether for a short time. Hopefully they’ve fixed it by now.

Thanks!

Perry,

With the Kinesis Freestyle keyboard, how do you handle not having a number pad? Or do you have an add-on number pad? If you do have an add-on, which on works well with the Freestyle?  (Damn - now I'm actually looking, pricing, checking my savings, etc....)

Thank you.

Man o man, those Contour products look so nice! I have the Logitech Marble Mouse but I use it sparingly. Every time I get going with it the scrolling ends up throwing me back to my Logitech G9. I think that scrolling - or lack of it, actually - has always been my bane with track balls.

But I love the looks of the Contour Roller Mouse and the Kinesis Freestyle Keyboard made to fit it!

Thanks!

Found Deals and Discounts / Timeline Maker Professional On Sale at Bits du Jour Today
« Last post by J-Mac on November 02, 2010, 11:31 PM »
I just noticed this at Bits. I know I've looked at this one a few times and it looks really interesting, but the regular price of $149 has always chased me away. They sometimes offer a special sale at their site for $99 but that's still high for me since I wouldn’t use this very often. But there are a few projects where I really could use this program! Now $49.95 is definitely a much more reasonable price - but I would still love to get some feedback from any existing users here at DC.

Anyone using this?

Thanks!

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Quick Comparision of Flickr/ipernity/PicassaWeb

Tom,

I use the Power plan mainly so that I can create custom pages, (using templates or HTML & CSS, etc.) and also so I could create a custom URL instead of the standard SmugMug+username. My pages have my own banner and are laid out as I like them.

Jibz, I do set privacy by the album; personally I don’t see the benefit of having different privacy settings photo by photo within an album. I plan and organize my albums accordingly - but that's just me.  :)

Thanks!

I've looked at many - SmugMug is the best IMO. FWIW, I have accounts at SmugMug (Power), Flickr (Pro), PicasaWeb (Free), Photobucket (Pro).

I haven't tried the RegEx trick admittedly, though I did report the first few sites where BID couldn't get the linked images for galleries. After that I stopped; about five or six sites in a row where BID didn't work and I started to feel like I would be reporting sites to them all day long. I just kinda threw up my hands and threw in the towel.

If I have the time next time I'll work on the RegEx coding. I guess I became sort of numb regarding reporting sites, issues, etc. after sending data to Microsoft for years and then finding out that much of that is discarded. Jaded I guess is what you would call me...   ;)  8)

Thanks!

BTW, more on topic - I find that I don’t use BID nearly as much as I had hoped when I purchased it earlier this year. I have had only about a 50% success rate in downloading photo galleries that I wanted.   :(  I expected that when I came across a site that had a number of thumbnails that required clicking to see each full-size photo that BID could grab all the full-size pics, but unfortunately it hasn’t been able to get many of them.

Thank you.

People DO share their photos on Flickr. Sharing doesn’t necessarily mean offering them for download though. I think that a lot of folks have many or most of their photos freely available for viewing and downloading; but nearly everyone has some that they would prefer to not be downloaded.

Of course that last comment refers to idiots who don’t realize that ANY photo that they upload and display there is exposed to downloading by anyone else who isn't an idiot!!   :P

I would hope that anyone who wants their photos to be online but out of view of the general browsing public wouldn’t put them on a site like Flickr. There are some sites that allow you to hide your photos pretty good out there.  :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Anyone familiar with Oops!Backup?
« Last post by J-Mac on October 19, 2010, 12:26 PM »
I should mention that I recently purchased three licenses for Oops Backup and installed the first license on my daughter's computer running Vista Home Premium on Saturday. She is thrilled so far as she has never stored much data on her computer before but recently found herself thinking about the many backup lectures with which I have hammered her! Fortunately she shouldn’t experience some of the problems that Armando did - the total size of her user directory that I set up Oops to backup is 29 GB, and I connected a 1TB USB 2.0 drive for her backup store. I think it would be tough for anything to fill that up quickly!

Thanks!

BTW, I originally joined Facebook because I was asked here to be a member of a software group on Facebook. So I joined and unfortunately not much ever really came of that. If I can find that post I'll put a link here.

Please, please, please, don’t put one of those little compact lines that expand into a giant window full of "sharing" links and then won't close and have no "X" to close them manually!!! I hate them!
