General Software Discussion / Re: Bypass internet filtering?
« Last post by justice on September 09, 2008, 06:52 AM »
I happen to work in a similar educational setting and the problem will be that students don't pay attention to the lecturer when youtube / facebook / gamessites are open on their pc which will be why they're blocked. You should ask for recreation rooms with pcs where these sites are not blocked. As they're not used during lessons there's no harm in a less restrictive filtering system there. That's a better solution than circumventing the filters which will just result in tighter filtering.

Living Room / Re: 32-bit Windows and the dreaded (and misunderstood) 4GB RAM limit
« Last post by justice on September 09, 2008, 05:48 AM »
I'm sure any pc you buy now can run 64 bit windows vista. I heard very good things about software compatibility, 64bit vista can still run 32bit programs just fine. So if you think of buying a new pc, just ask in the shop if it's possible to get 64bit vista on it preinstalled and they will make sure your drivers are up to date etc. You'll be set for the future.

If you don't plan to get more than 4gb of ram in the life of your new pc then 32bit is fine too, i don't see 32bit software will die off very quick seeing as how many people are still using XP etc. That's what I reckon, feel free to expand.

General Software Discussion / Re: Font managers reviews and opinions

I use font every day and I can recommend Linotype FontExplorer (download). It was a generation ahead of Extensis Suitcase and Adobe Type Manager when i started using it a year or two ago.

General Software Discussion / Re: How do you manage your email?
« Last post by justice on September 05, 2008, 07:57 AM »
I delete everything from inbox immediately, unless I need to do it (keep in inbox to remind myself), or I know I'll need it later (reference), or it's taken care of by automated filters. First I wanted to keep all my email in case i needed it. Now I know that i won't need 50% of all work email when i get it so jsut goes in the bin. I always sort my inbox so that it's not more than one sometimes two screens, if i can't filter it i delete it. if i done it i delete it.

With home mail, gmail makes it harder to delete it as it promotes archiving, so i use archive instead, and clean up any crap mail after i read through search results for something (when you find 20 mails regarding a lost password that you know you changed and written down for example).

I do explicitly not use the unread messages view because i rather clean up and delete from inbox, that way my search results are better.

General Software Discussion / Re: Google Chrome -- key reasons for its debut
« Last post by justice on September 05, 2008, 03:21 AM »
Couldn't resist when i saw this on the blog (in reply to the osnews article):
"Considered Harmful" Essays Considered Harmful
"Considered harmful" essays are not only a sad cliché at this stage of the game, they are counter-productive to reasoned debate and most often do far more harm than good to whatever cause they promote. It would therefore seem obvious that the only intelligent course of action is to abandon their use entirely, and instead look to more constructive forms of essay writing in the support of debate positions.

Q: Would you consider it a success if IE9 was built on Chrome?

A: Sergey: We would consider that a success, and even if IE9 was much better, we would consider that a success. Our business is Web usage, and that's why we work hard on making sure people can access the Internet on cell phones, that's why we bid on the wireless spectrum. Any improvement to any set of browsers is good for Google.

They're actually hoping other browsers will implement their javascript improvements to create a more equal level playing field, and provide the support to do so. So this should be all good.
885
I don't remember Google blaming anything to the Beta label? And the only time beta is mentioned in Chrome's help is talking about a beta java release.
886
The official Google Chrome forum has been set up: http://chromespot.com/

No intention to kill interesting discussions here, but for bug reports and suggestions that you sincerely want the developers to know, you may have a better chance getting their attention there.
Actually as far as I can see that's an unofficial forum?
According to Help's support options they use a google group http://groups.google...p/google-chrome-help

Technically it's not a vulnerability because it's not exploitable as far as we know now.

Really love it. Really miss Roboform though, but it browsers so fast, especially javascript heavy sites like our bugtracking system (fogbugz). It's very polished for a beta although I couldn't create a shortcut for one site, and some things look unfinished or out of place. But a very encouraging start and it's a browser i can see recommending to people that are hestitant of too many interface options.

You also have to realise this is not really a browser as a direct competitor to firefox and ie:
In the long term, we think of Chromium as a tabbed window manager or shell for the web rather than a browser application. We avoid putting things into our UI in the same way you would hope that Apple and Microsoft would avoid putting things into the standard window frames of applications on their operating systems.

Yeah after a day's use (leaving the pc on overnight at the end of the workday), Vista/XP Virtual Desktop Manager is now using 160MB haha (private working set)
889
I'm using Vista/XP Virtual Desktop Manager now. workds nice

One of Vista's most talked-about new features is the Desktop Window Manager (DWM). A new set of thumbnail API's can be used to access thumbnails of open windows. This virtual desktop program takes advantage of this new API and uses some tricks of its own to provide a powerful virtual desktop manager with a full screen thumbnail based preview. You can have as many desktops as you want and can seamlessly switch between them.

But wait! What if you still are using XP? Don't worry, Vista/XP Virtual Desktops provides support for XP as well, although window previews are not live since XP doesn't have DWM.

how many developers do they have for all these projects wow

Living Room / Re: What is a mouser? What does it mean to mouser someone?
« Last post by justice on September 01, 2008, 07:10 AM »
I noticed it doesn't exist as an Urbandictionary term yet! Fantastic site by the way, if you like words and/or have a sense of humour ;)

1.    Mouser
one who has relations with a person of the opposite sex, who is at least 6-12 inches shorter.
Casey became a mouser when she hooked up with Paul S the wrester.

2.    Mouser
Mouser(n) or (adj): Any person who kisses ass persistently.
On Police Academy 1 & 2, The ranking officer that always hated Mahoney; his side-kick Proctor was always kissing this Lt. ass...constantly.

Guy #1: Damn dude, why you always gotta be a mouser when Chris come to the hood?
Guy #2: Get off that shit man, I ain't mousin' him...dude be drivin' some tight rides yo! He's the man!
ass-kisser brown-nose brownie points kiss-up uncle-tom

Sent in the definitiion of the topic start, hopefully it will be accepted :P

I've not settled either on any virtual desktop solution, Dexpot comes close, but has too many options, is not polished enough and it's probably because windows isn't built for it.

Gadgetopia seems a nice site. Good find. Abstracting away from html /css / js could actually be a positive argument though, considering how much hassle it is sometimes with browser inconsistencies.

General Software Discussion / Re: Online shops user opinions firefox addon?
« Last post by justice on August 30, 2008, 06:45 PM »
Just to be clear:
I'm not just looking for security information (although obviously it would be beneficial) of the site.
I'm not looking at reviewcentre / ciao or price comparison sites with comments filled by shop employees.
When I find a deal I need to know something like: "quick service, reliable", "good packaging, would recommend" and 500 transactions (98% positive)

General Software Discussion / Online shops user opinions firefox addon?
« Last post by justice on August 30, 2008, 06:39 PM »
Whenever i'm shopping online I want to know if the website with the good deal is reputable. It's possible to google for shop + scam, and check the mcafee siteadvisor (or start a topic in your fav forum) but I was wondering if there are any websites that are not marketing driven with honest user reviews of shopping websites (like ebay's feedback system).

Bonus points for any firefox addon integration for easy access / discussion.

If not is this a good idea for a new site?

even better I think, or have it scroll down one result at a time when you press down from the last result? Makes sense spatially but then you don't see more of them at a glance. tough one.

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Jungle Disk Mini-Review: offsite data storage
« Last post by justice on August 22, 2008, 04:14 AM »
To be honest Foldershare (when I last used it) would great but there were two things that prevented me from using it all the time: the tiny temporary files that get created before the file is synced over (double the files in the folder, come up in search results, can't remember why I really didn't like that though), and the fact that my work pc will never get the full info because i don't leave my home pc on during the day (which was a stumbling block). Maybe I should try it again

Dropbox however exceeds all my expectations, so I can't wait until there's more space available. I guess I need to look into a portable harddisk too.

What about a "more..." button in the bottom right of the statusbar or thereabouts? Should really be part of the interface I think, at the moment it's not discoverable unless you read the helpfile.

Why would being open source be important to an application without it's own format, without any way to create data?
