Living Room / Re: Am I the only person bothered by the differences in Free?
« Last post by mouser on October 08, 2013, 10:51 AM »
I have huge respect for Richard Stallman, but the attempts to "re-brand" and co-opt the term free as it applied to software programs, from the original meaning free of charge to the new meanings related to source code availability and options, was a big mistake and continues to lead to some confusion. But no point getting agitated about it, the attempt has not been very successful.

Given your scenario, the first order of business is to make a full image backup of the netbook hard drive, onto an external usb hard drive, which you should already own.  Any drive imager software will work, but I use Macrium Free edition in such situations.

That will give you both peace of mind if you have to go back, and just as importantly, access to the installed programs and data if you need them later.   If you think you might need access to the files and have enough room on your external usb drive, do a normal COPY of all files on the netbook hd in addition to the drive image, just to make it easier to access the files until you know you have them all transfered.

One option to installing using a windows 7 dvd on a netbook pc, is to buy an external dvd drive.

Try this:

Download the portable version of CHS and just unpack it into a directory you have write access to (somewhere in your mydocuments).

That will give you a new clean CHS install with a separate database.  See if the problem is solved there.

That will tell us if it might be something messed up with your old database or configuration settings, or if it's something more pernicious.

The file names seem fine and shouldn't make a difference.

The grey color just means that the clip is in a child group of the one you are currently in; it shouldn't effect anything.

Let's see.. another question to ask would be to confirm that the clip is really still there even on restart.

SO you try to delete a clip and it stays visible.  If you exit and come back, is it still there?

And can you add new clips?
Can you MOVE clips by dragging and dropping them into different folders?

And what operating system is this?

Jesper are these clips in a normal group? is there anything special about them (are they marked as favorites?)
are they in the recycle bin?

I can see the grey lines for very young kids, but i have to agree with vlastimill -- a child should be able to have secrets -- to have a private diary, etc.

Wraith the cases you brought up, about things you kept to yourself because you thought they were your fault/problem.  That's something completely different. That's a case best avoided by having a close open relationship with parent who tries their best to understand the struggles of the child.

That is different from saying that one is going to secretly spy on all things a child says and does.  In order to grow and mature, even children need to be able to have private discussions with friends, etc. If when I was just entering my teenage years I had discovered that my parents were secretly listening to every conversation/communication i had, i would have gone ballistic.

I can't imagine the damage it would have done to my relationship with my parents.  That's something you really need to consider if you are secretly monitoring your child's activities.

Again, this is different from having an 8yr old child who you arent sure is mature enough for a cell phone, and making an clear agreement with them that you are going to be checking their internet browsing history in exchange for letting them have the phone.  That's not really spying, that's more like having a supervision agreement with someone who understands they are playing with a dangerous instrument and may not be ready for it.

My view is that when a child becomes old enough to object to you reading their emails and checking their browsing history, they are probably mature enough that you should let them have their privacy -- barring some serious evidence of danger.

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: How to use My Notes?
« Last post by mouser on October 06, 2013, 03:43 AM »
It's just a pre-made group you can use to put things into.  You can make your own groups as well.

The only real difference between it and the Clipboard Old/New group is that the Old/New group optionally (but enabled by default) will move clips from New to Old to the recycle bin over time, to keep things tidy.  No such moves will take place in the My Notes group.

But again, it's just a premade group you can put clips into.  You can make your own groups that work identically.

Do note that there is a button  at the upper left of the Memo panel for creating a new clip (or you could call it "note") in whatever group you are currently in, manually.

There was a point when I was considering making CHS a full-fledged note taking application, so some of the features can be seen in that light.  Having said that, I'd advise against people really trying to make heavy use of it as a note taking app, simply because there are better tools for that.

Yes i like this idea -- perhaps a configurable toolbar for special web actions like search, define, etc.

I wish you guys would distinguish in your arguments between the case for monitoring a child's cellphone/gps with vs without their knowledge.  To me this is the critical factor distinguishing appropriate from inappropriate.

it would make me feel more that the program is learning "with" me when simply using it.

here's someone who knows how to motivate me.  for a program with the name "robot" in it, you might guess that i want it to feel like it is learning.  so i will indeed try to add this feature.

I can sympathize with Ladar in minor ways as I had a perfectly legal and ethical business that was destroyed by government. I was blind-sided. I never saw it coming.  It completely destroyed my life.

I'm sorry to hear that Renegade, it's the first time you've told us about this I think..

wraith try unchecking both of this.  in the next version i will move and label this better -- but unchecking both should surely solve your problem.

It will not report to you when there is a new beta.
This is by design so that most people only get the stable non-betas.

time for me to look into this..

It's one thing to have an explicit agreement with your young kids that you are going to be monitoring their online/mobile activity in exchange for them getting such a device.  But doing it secretly seems like it's teaching them some wrong lessons.

Seems to work here for me.  Can you check you are using the latest version, and then if the problem persists, can you be a little more specific about what actions you take and what behavior you experience.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Heuristic Scoring for previous search term.

Welcome to the site WongKit.

This is actually an interesting question that has come up before.

As it stands, farr does not remember which search terms you used to launch an item, so it doesn't have a way to remember that when you last typed "fi" you chose firefox, and give it a higher score the next time you specifically type "fi".

It might be interesting to experiment with adding this..

However the current "farr" way of doing what you want would be as follows:
  • Find firefox in the farr results, right click on it and choose "add to group alias" and then choose "new alias group" at top.
  • In the new alias dialog, specify fi as the alias keyword trigger, and hit OK.

Now whenever you type "fi" it will instantly show firefox as the one and only result.

Note that this is the most basic way of using alias groups -- to create an alias for one single program.  But it's still quite useful because farr doesn't even have to search anymore once you create an explicit alias.  More advanced uses let you group programs under one alias to act like a kind of menu, or even to have a keyword that will launch the program immediately without you even having to hit enter, or regular expression aliases that can be used to perform different actions based on what you type.
