Let's see...some pissy prima donnas took a snit about something Gawker said about them and their cohorts...and decided to punish Gawker by compromising the account information of +200K innocent users...in order to teach Gawker some "respect" for Gnossis and 4Chan?

Maybe I'm missing something, but just who is being the "arrogant" jerk here?

(God, do some people ever need to get a life!)  :-\

I still think the image in the original post is of much higher quality than the ones posted here done with 2D drawing applications or automatically generated from data. That's why I mentioned a 3D modeling program.

Very true. But a 3D modeling app represents a bigger investment in resources and knowledge in order to get that more realistic output. So to me, it all comes down to what constitutes "acceptable" results.

Most people can handle 2D and get very realistic effects. From what I've seen, modeling programs constitute a much larger challenge since it's harder to think in 3D, which requires some education and practice. Just like drawing. Almost anybody can do a 2D cartoon sketch. Far fewer ever develop the skills needed to do what would beconsidered a 'good drawing.'

I think most of the replies to the question were attempting to demonstrate that it's not difficult to do a graphic similar to the example. The person who asked the question seemed to give the impression that he thought it would be a much harder task than it is. So most of the suggestions were intended to "empower" him to give it a try.

All of which didn't exactly answer his question...while your post did, since a modelling program would generate better results. I don't think anybody here meant to make it seem like they were ignoring your point. You are 100% correct.

But since when has directly answering any question been the DC way?  ;D

I've been using the PasswordHasher extension under Firefox for day to day use for low to moderately secure logins.

Anybody know anything better that works in a similar fashion and also doesn't effectively require an online account?

For very secure passwords (like on client servers) I'll head over to random.org and generate a set of very long, very random strings - and pray to all that is holy I never lose the (also encrypted) list.  ;D

Just finished reading Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff (who also wrote Fool on the Hill, which is one of my absolute favorite novels.)

badmonkey.jpg

Bad Monkeys is dark, disturbing, and quasi sci-fi. It deals with Ms. Jane Charlotte, operative for The Department for the Final Disposition of Irredeemable Persons, a shadowy and elusive organization which investigates, judges, and removes from society those deemed beyond hope of redemption. Jane is one of their hatchet men.

The story unfolds as a series of flashbacks and interviews with her prison psychologist. Jane has been arrested for murder. The government is trying to determine if she is criminally insane since nobody seems to believe her truly weird tale of how she was recruited and became part of what she insists is an actual government agency.

As her interviews progress, her story begins to get stranger and stranger. And more and more believable...

Disturbing book. And a very relevant moral tale in this era of "rendition," extrajudicial government enforcement actions, secret prisons, and wars on terror.

This took all of 2 minutes using two freeware apps. I did it using the most entry level programs I had as a proof of concept.

The cylinder is composed of: two ellipses, one rectangle, and a simple gradient fill.

cylinder.png

If I spent more time, or used a more sophisticated graphics program that allowed me to use textures, reflections, and play with the lighting sources and angles, I could have easily made it look even more like a 'real' object.

The point I'm trying to make is that anybody should be able to create decent illustrations with today's hardware and software.

but it's pretty much just straight configuration file settings, commented very well, that looks very much akin to a .INI file

Actually, I kinda found it a little fascinating. Once I saw that I started using Sublime to open up some of the Python  :-*  files found inside the app folder. Most programs don't give you the opportunity to peek inside their kimono like that.

Pretty cool stuff!  8)

The biggest problem I've encountered with the whole e-book thing is that it's such a good idea that virtually everybody is on to it.

The market is glutted with tons of self-published technical e-books. About 30% are good. The remaining 70% are pitiful and have had the unfortunate effect of damaging the reputation of the entire tech e-book market.

So unless you can interest a publisher (Que, O'Reilly, SAMS, Wrox, Prentice-Hall, APress, etc.) to sign you on, it's going to be a tough sell to the consumer since they don't know you. And getting the big publishers to take you on for an e-book is no easier than convincing them to put you in print, since they have their own reputations to consider.

The other big problem is "ad hoc reproduction" (i.e. bootleg) issues. Since an e-book can be readily duplicated and distributed without paying the author, the only way to really make out with an e-book is to use it as a marketing tool to help sell your other products or services.

Writing a good tech book goes a long way towards establishing your credibility and expertise on a  subject. Ideally it will lead to additional publishing deals, consulting contracts, speaking engagements, or the opportunity to do a sales presentation. But by itself, it's usually little more than a lot of work for very little in return.

Smart musical groups have already started to realize they're not likely to continue raking in millions on old-style recording contracts alone. The smarter groups have already taken action by pushing their live performances, ancillary merchandise, and building their fan clubs - some of which charge a fee to belong to!

The fact that many fans are willing to pay for VIP memberships indicates these "clubs" are providing something more than a list of concert dates and a gallery of band photos. (Hint: priority notifications and announcements, advance private ticket sales, "preferred" concert seating, discounts on merchandise, "members only" unreleased singles, the opportunity to 'vote' on future concert locations, etc.)

So again, an e-book may work. But it won't be enough by itself. Most likely it will only be part of a larger suite of products and services that make up the rest of your revenue model.

This is probably the root of a lot of the disagreements I am starting to have with a lot of the hardcore users here.  Even the whole Apple stuff I'm talking about now.  I'm changing.  I recognize it.  I love computers and technology, but I'm not willing to spend hours anymore trying to do simple things because programmers won't make a button for it.

 +1   ;D

I'm not quite there yet. But I'm a lot more there than I used to be.

In my case, I'm probably more tolerant than I should be because computers are something "I do" as opposed to something "I do something with." I'm an IT systems person, which is roughly akin to being a perpetual bridesmaid.

End-users ask me what games I recommend, or "what's a good way to (fill in the blank)" - and I have to tell them I really am not the best person to ask. I'm like the lead guy in a race team's pit crew. I'll design the car, build the car, tune the car, test the car, fix it when it breaks... but it's somebody else who races the car, not me. (Unless it's a server.  )

There's two separate worlds here: Systems & Desktop. Each have very different end-goals despite the fact they share many intermediate goals along the way

I think any impatience you feel is more the result of what your real job is. If your real job is the technology itself (systems), you're more likely to put up with dumb-ass design decisions because it's...well...it's your job to do that. If your real job is to get results out of a piece of technology (desktop), then anything that gets in the way of speedy results is an annoyance at best.

Two different worlds. And each correct in its own way.

^ I don't mind it too much either (thanks to many hours of working with servers) but I agree with SB that some sort of interface would have been nice to have in addition.

First rule of interface design: why allow only one method of working if you don't have to? Good tools are deep, flexible, and accommodating.

FWIW the forums seem to be loading noticeably quicker today than previously. At first I chalked it up to the transition until I read your notice. Did you do some heavy duty clean-up or optimizations to the drives or database prior to trying the transition?

I checked the stats on my network and router and they're in line with their averages so I suspect the improvement I'm seeing is due to something you've done on your end.

Luck!

^ I his case, I'm afraid the current set of charges are just the opening act in a much larger tragic opera he's about to play a role in.

I wish him luck with that. He'll need it. Especially if his "real" crime was nothing more than pissing off the wrong people. Because that's a "crime" you don't get to walk away from without first getting seriously hurt.

The law is often lenient when dealing with real criminal offenses. However, it is seldom more arbitrary and brutal than when it's dealing with what it sees as an insult, or a challenge to it's authority.

I would be very surprised if they weren't created entirely on a computer. For this type of image, it would actually be harder to do it photographically than it would be to do it digitally.

Anyone can duplicate any image provided they have the necessary hardware, software, and know-how. Fortunately, creating such graphics readily falls within the capabilities of affordable hardware and software setups. Know-how is a little harder to come by. But, again fortunately, there is a huge amount of free instruction and help available online to allow you to produce just about any type of graphic image you want to. Much of it is step-by-step instruction too.

Deozaan, that sidebar with the entire file content's preview is awesome!  I have never seen that in a text editor, what a great idea.

Also +1. Brilliant!  :-*

Downloading as we speak. If it works half as well as it looks I'm gonna have to find another $60 for a license. I want that feature!

Some of the most soul crushing experiences you can imagine come from owning a business and being "your own" boss. (Whatever that means.)

I speak from direct personal experience on that score.

what you and me need (and many others) is the article called
The Minimalist Guide to Leaving My Soul-Crushing Business/Self-Employed work
:)

I can't remember where I first heard this. But it still rings true:

"Being self-employed is no different than working for somebody else, except that the hours are usually longer and the medical benefits are nowhere near as good."

I'm guessing that with Wikileaks effectively shut down (now that most future sources of information will be thinking twice) the whole incident will be allowed to fade into the background.

I also wouldn't be surprised if several of the principles involved eventually wound up: being arrested and convicted on some serious but unrelated criminal charge; overdosing on drugs or alcohol; committing suicide; or running their cars off deserted roads with no witnesses should they continue to embarass national governments after this.

Sad truth: you play in the big leagues, it's always for high stakes - and it's played for keeps.  :(
