Sounds like they may end up with a trademark infringement case from Palladium. I thought the game was for their off-line game.

Had a quick look at the website... Why do all games need to have classes? The Hero system is nice because you don't have to be jammed into a "class". Ah well...

But I wouldn't believe everything you read about it. A lot is just conjecture.
I do things that "gurus" say don't work, but I get results.
What is it you do that gurus say doesn't work?  And how do you get results?

See this post. That's a start.

Other things include:

* Writing properly
* Linking intelligently
* On-page SEO that is designed to work with off-page SEO
* Meta tags. Yes. Meta tags.

While content is king, you can either dress your king in the emperor's new clothes, that nobody wants to see, or you can dress you king like a king. That means authoring a document properly, and that includes meta tags, as well as a lot of other things.

Too many people are simply sloppy and lazy with their markup. Their documents are simply crap as documents. (I'm guilty of this as well.)

The point there is to use the available markup as it was intended to be used. If you do that, you've got your on-page SEO partially nailed down. The rest is having good content.

It's like building a house. Having good lumber is important, but you also need nails. The nails are a very small part, but they're important.

So, for example, simply using tags like strong, b, i, em, abbr, and acronym, as well as properties like title, makes a difference. It's not spammy. It's simply authoring a document that is well done.

I get lazy in a lot of places too. But, I always take the time to have something relevant in the title property for images, and often for links.

Search engines love good documents. They're tasty. :P

And it's also important to remember that courts are "courts of law." They're not debating societies or forums for public opinion.

In the US, that's the function of the legislature - not the judiciary.

BWahahaha~! :D

Nonetheless I take issue with the idea of professors being employees of the students. This is not the case, staff in a University are only answerable only to the administration.

I think that's more metaphorical and not literal. They're no more "employees of students" than a waiter is an employee of a customer in a restaurant. Figuratively though, the educator is still supposed to be working for the benefit of the student, and the "employer / employee" analogy works.

Nice one, quick and easy, but batch conversion?

I've actually got a batch converter done already, but it's not ready for the general public. A few issues there... It's in a bulk uploader for Flickr that I wrote. (Resize - upload - repeat)

One of the issues is directly related to the same issues in this thread.

It's funny that you mention that though, as an overwhelming amount of the software I write is all mass production/bulk processing software. None of that ever gets released though.

I suppose it would be ok to throw a toggle switch in there... Single <> Batch

But, I have a little job to upload with my Flickr uploader right now... back in a bit... (Motorhead fans -- you're gonna LOVE this~!) :D

Living Room / Re: Microsoft Formats Causing Issues Again...
« Last post by Renegade on January 25, 2011, 05:11 AM »
Yea, taxpayers shouldn't fund proprietary corporate formats, much less their operating systems, and no government division or office should dictate such. Dictate ODF and if Microsoft can't read/write to the format, then it shouldn't quality for government purchase. I also support Italy's suit against Microsoft that says by merely turning on your machine and starting the software, you've already agreed to the EULA!
http://www.channelre...umers_sue_microsoft/

Hmmm... Dunno... I way go with whatever works best for the particular situation, proprietary or not.

For the Italian stuff... Sheesh... I have a hard time with some of that:

The statement from the Italian authorities made it clear that they do not believe that hardware manufacturers are entirely blameless, but said: "the principal cause of the failure is Microsoft itself..."

That's simply BS. If you want a computer, you can buy one without Windows. I never buy computers with Windows on. (Well, my laptop is a different story, but none of my desktops.) Anywhere you go, you can get computers built with no OS.

It's like blaming trees because your house is made of wood. Damn trees~! If you don't want a wood house, buy one made of concrete!

Or like blaming Madonna or Prince Charles for being environmentally unfriendly because newspapers report on them a lot and waste paper.

It's not Microsoft that needs to pay anyone there. It's the computer manufacturers.

they do not believe that hardware manufacturers are entirely blameless

Huh? They're basically saying that they aren't to blame with a stance like that. The direction of the suit is obvious that they aren't blaming the carpenter for the warped floors -- they're blaming the trees.

The class action case says Microsoft makes it too difficult for people who buy a computer with Microsoft software on it to remove that software and get their money back. Most users do not realise that starting the software means you have accepted the end user licence.

If you don't want something, don't buy it. It's not that hard a concept.

I wonder if I can go out and buy a chocolate bar, eat it, then bitch and complain because I didn't want the sugar in it. I should get my money back for the sugar, yes I should~! :P

Actually, I want a refund for all the booze I've drunk here! I really only wanted the lovely taste, and I certainly didn't want the alcohol. So why should I be forced to pay taxes to the government for something I don't want? When I crave the lovely taste of some good ol' Tennessee bourbon, but I certainly don't want all that C2H5OH, I get rammed with a government TAX~! Where's my refund~! :P

Come to think of it, the water from the tap has fluorine put in it, and I don't want it, so I should get a refund for that too!

Ok... I'm done being totally silly now. But I'm not that far off the mark.

What kind of an idiot would buy a black leather jacket, then demand a refund because they want a brown one? It's beyond stupid.

Sorry Zane, but the case really just sounds like a "let's pick on MS" circus. I'm all for people buying computers and getting the OS they want, but I'm not for people buying stuff knowing full well what it is then being idiots. It's just not that hard to get a computer without Windows.

Well in some ways only.

Take the example of a gym, you pay membership so get access to the facilities/machines. But the staff there don't become your employees, nor are they obliged to ensure you get fit. As part of the conditions of their employment, they may be required to assist the customers or give advice, but whether they meet those requirements is ultimately a matter between them and the management.

But if you go on to win $100,000 in a competition, does that entitle the gym to a share in the prize money and glory?

Receiving a grant is another matter... But for the simple case, I think this is clear cut. You're paying for services. Period. Your work is your work and you own it.

...they are paying for the privilege...

In the same way that customers pay for the privilege to use products/services from businesses... Like Apple... Or Sony...

We're never going to agree on this one.

http://www.theaustra...frgakx-1225993876379

THE Australian Government Information Management Office has taken to Twitter and the blogosphere after being criticised for an IT policy seemingly biased in favour of Microsoft.

AGIMO last Wednesday finalised its Common Operating Environment policy for desktops and laptops.

According to AGIMO, the policy "defines the principles and standards that will apply to agency desktop operating environments" and ensure desktop standardisation across agencies.

The policy covers a range of areas, but what riled the software community was that document formats seemed to mandate a Microsoft-only environment.

Open source software advocate Jeff Waugh described it as an "arse-covering" exercise, an attempt by AGIMO to avoid using the word "Microsoft" in the policy. "I suspect that use of the term 'ECMA-376' (document standard) is almost entirely an arse-covering exercise, when what they really mean is docx and friends (including .doc) created with Microsoft Office 2007," he wrote on the Linux Australia list, comments that were repeated to the The Australian.

Here we go again...

+1 for 40hz

I do understand that, but I'm just musing on the possibility of the university saying it had an active part in developing the idea and so has a valid claim to it.

Huh? No way. Work for hire. Universities and professors are nothing more than employees of the students. They act in the same capacity that a consultant or trainer would. Anything they contribute towards an idea that the employers (students) create is a "work for hire" and they have no rights to it.

Cynicism
However, given the general state of mental retardation present in so many court rooms, I would fully expect them to rule against sanity.

Extreme cynicism
Academia used to be driven by principles. That has disappeared. They are now driven by dollars. They are nothing more than information whores tricking out their wares. This is only one more example where GREED is motivating them to f**k their students.

I really can't see how they can possibly think that they have ANY rights to ANYTHING produced by ANY student.

It's theft. Pure and simple. They are trying to steal from their students.

Using university facilities? That's what students are paying for. They're renting it.

For me, this is a black and white issue.

People want to reduce photos to make them smaller to upload or email (most often).

A one-click system to reduce any size original to a specified size for e-mail/forum posting?

Exactly.

However, this requires 1 drag & drop, 1 slide, and 1 click. So a bit more than 1 click, but not much. :)

I frequently fall into the don't make me think, just make the %*&# picture bigger category ... so this could be quite handy.

Sorry... It's only for photo reductions. You can't enlarge photos with it.

Again, that was one of those decisions I took away from the user. Since all enlargements cause a reduction in quality, I didn't see any point in it.

Also, the photos you get from digital cameras now are so big, that the only thing you can do with them is to reduce them.

i.e. People want to reduce photos to make them smaller to upload or email (most often).

Looks just the job for people who need a 'click-do-this' approach with trusted software.

A super-simple CD/DVD burner might be nice to go with this (more simple than those currently available). I can get people in 'don't understand' boat to use  a CD whereas they're often phased by the idea of external storage.

I've been wanting to do that one for years now... Every so often I look into it, but end up busy with other things. I think I should put that higher up on the priority list once I get a couple more photo utilities done. (First focus = camera.)

sounds like a good idea for a complete range of programs/tools.

That's the idea.

Speaking of which... Got an idea for a domain name... Hold on...

Grrrr... Internet crawling... Like always...

you'll need an equally super simple/obvious website to store them at. make it a point that anything requiring "instruction" or "explanation" is too much. every tool is 100% intuitive and takes about 5 seconds to realise what it does.

your website could be the place to go for every google simple how-to search. (and then google would buy you out - or just imitate your idea.)

I'd love to build a set then have it bought out.

Whoa. Having read your initial post, I concluded that Mrs. Renegade was the inspiration for this upcoming set of tools. Shouldn't you be looking for a relationship councel first? The wife might be offended.

HAHAHAHAHAHA~!

No. Not at all. I wanted to do it before then. She was simply the catalyst to get me to do it. She already saw this thread -- I showed her. :D

I have a lot more planned as well. Just... Gotta do them one at a time. She needed it then, so there we go.

She's actually very smart -- doing her PhD now -- she just doesn't want to bother with software -- she wants to solve problems -- which is something techies tend to forget -- people have pain, and software doesn't solve that pain -- solutions solve pain -- software can implement the solution though. She's not alone. There are a lot of people that just want to "get things done" without any complexity to create additional barriers.

Got the domain~! :D

nice, it works here. but then you wanted feedback.. :) so here goes:

1. since the app deals with photos, how about the preserving the timestamp to be the same as original.
2. i feel lazy and want to use the scroll wheel on the slider to resize the images

just some thoughts.

Good ideas.

1 - I'll be doing some additional work on tags and that later.
2 - Got some done there -- need to smooth it out a bit though.

maybe a "crop" feature. or is that going too far?

I think that's a bit far at the moment. I'd rather stick to super-simple for the moment. Later I might look into doing a cropping utility, but right now -- simple, simple, simple.

My current aim is to build up a small suite of super-simple programs that are SOOOOO simple that you really need to be basically brain dead to not be able to use them easily.

e.g. No menus. No toolbars. An "X" button in the title bar should be enough. (Duplicate Photo Finder does this.)

You know that techno-tard that pesters you for help all the time? Yeah. That one. That's who I'm aiming for. :D
8594
Push the button~! Push the button~!

BUY
You pushed it!

8595
Apparently "what comes around goes around," huh?  :P  ;)

Hahahah~!

Well, kind of. I'm not a cause of the problem. I'm a symptom. Because domains disappear, if you want to use one, whether or not you can, you have to buy it.

It's a vicious circle.

The logic bears resemblance to deterrence theory (escalation).

My wife came to me and wanted to resize a photo. Well, we've been through this before... She's got software to do it, but it's not easy enough. I showed her again, but she doesn't like IrfanView because it's simply too complicated. So...

The all new Renegade Photo Resizer! ed. Super Simple Photo Resizer

Photo-Resizer.png

Is it easy enough to use? I'm looking to make it stupidly simple. So simple that a politician could use it~!

I had options and stuff in there... but I figured that it was just crap that isn't needed. Who cares about JPG ratios? 80% is good enough. Exact sizes? BAH! Slider. Close enough. How many people actually know that you must have your photo dimensions as multiples of 16 in order to minimize quality loss? Not many... I take care of the little stuff and leave only the MAJOR decisions to the user.

It requires .NET v4 though. There's no installer. Just the EXE.

(It's not final quality yet -- a few tiny things to tweak.)

UPDATE 2011-03-25:

I've posted follow up in this thread.
8598
Here's an example game:

http://www.codeproje...me/PegSolitaire.aspx

Another project:

http://netcode.ru/do...D=259&artID=6763

A DHTML game:

http://www.blackdog4...zles/jump/index.html

Some peg logic:

http://www.worldling...iki/en/Peg_solitaire

Chess:

http://en.wikipedia....rg/wiki/Chess_engine

A starter kit:

http://www.chessbin....Game-Starer-Kit.aspx

For the sake of productivity, it would likely be easiest to start with some source and go from there. i.e. Why reinvent the wheel? Programming yet another chess engine is simply dumb.

The key there, I believe, is to come up with a twist. Devise a way for the game to offer something new and novel. e.g. Chess: Cody vs. Worms. etc. etc. etc.

Puzzles... Mazes... Platformers... There's lots of code already available. I think it's best to pick a decent open source project, then spin it off into a DC game. BSD licenses are best, but for donationware, GPL is fine too.
8599
I worry about as well, and i'll bet it happens a lot.
I think the only safe thing is to not search for a domain unless you are prepared to buy it on the spot if you want it.

The problem is that squatters and domainers have already scooped up so many domains, that you're stuck trying to find *something* that's not already gone, which is a long process of trial and error.

The .me domains actually have a lot still available. e.g. I was able to snap up http://cynic.me, which you couldn't get for $10k in .com.

So, with all your best ideas already gone, so you're stuck with this horrible process of trial and error. You get frustrated and just start sticking in any old domain name that comes to mind... You hum and haw over them, and can't figure out if you really want them or not...

It's not like you have much of a *good* choice. You end up with a ton of domains that aren't exactly what you want, but *could* do... What do you pick? It's tough.

You don't want to buy 20 domains... 1 is enough... Decisions, decisions!
8600
Why not build puzzles first, then later do a game with the puzzles in it

i don't get it -- what would this mean?

I was referring to this:

(Bare in mind I know nothing about gaming, but...) Wouldn't it be possible to do both? Journey through the dungeon labyrinth solving puzzles to get to the next room/passageway/level?

Think of the "solving puzzles" as a very small element within the game that repeats. Creating these kinds of puzzles in a way that users can create modifications of them would be a good small start. Think of it as a practice run through in order to get people into the groove.

Puzzles are relatively simple. The problem is to create puzzles that are fun.

So, for example, a peg-jumping puzzle to remove all the pegs would be relatively simple. But it would need a twist to be fun. e.g. Cody must run over worm holes and eat the worms, but can only run over a worm hole once. Animation there is probably the key element to making that work.

But simple, simple puzzles like that would make an excellent start. Later, they could be incorporated into a dungeon game or whatever.
