Has anyone ever read a funny Cathy comic? (Well, not been totally high and read a Cathy comic that was funny. Being high just makes everything funny, even Cathy.)

Yeah, but it was a very long time ago.

cathy.jpg

Like back in the late 70's, when Cathy was a "smart but confused" single woman just starting to make her way in the world. The passing years brought on new jobs, new responsibilities, marriage, and middle-age angst, which all combined to make her a more complex albeit less amusing character than she once was.

Much like what happened to so many of us. :-[

But no matter. It's over. Like many other successful cartoonists, Ms. Guisewite has announced she's retiring both herself and her lookalike.

These days I use 2 side-by-side 27" (1920 x 1200) monitors. That's a physical run of 4 feet by 16 inches.
That gives me somewhat over four US-letter-size pages, portrait, at actual size, which is important to me as I still work with physical documents
I can see all of what I want without any significant head movement (except for nodding off occasionally).
-cranioscopical (December 29, 2010, 08:56 AM)

That sounds perfect to me too. What brand/model monitors are you using?

... and the same questions are asked over and over and over again. The forum has a rather simple, yet sufficient "Search this thread" function, which is apparently not used much.

To be honest, most often I don't think that's an excuse for anything at all.

Agree.

Just for the record, the first quote about the "Search this thread" function isn't mine. It's me quoting TucknDar further up in the thread. Don't know why the attribution got chopped off.

I seriously doubt she meant it the way some people over there might take it. Especially since the "smack" part would likely require some rather complicated choreography. Possibly even special equipment.

Either thats lost in translation or yeaaaaah....it doesnt mean the same thing in England

Yes, exactly!

If a person is always smugly telling everyone how perfect he is in every way, people are going to be very eager to point out his flaws. If another person admits he has flaws but tries nevertheless, people will be more forgiving and willing to overlook his shortcomings.

Well put. It's fine to be arrogant if you can back it up.

True, but not overly.  ;D She always sends a PM with a nicely worded request that you correct and resubmit. Most of the suggestions she makes for how to improve your post are hysterically funny.

Oddly enough, almost all of the participants seem to respect and appreciate her rulebook. Especially the ones who occasionally run afoul of it. I suspect half of them do it in hopes of getting a coveted Gwen|gramme which always begins with:

When I'm concentrating, I'm almost completely oblivious to whatever is going on around me. So as long as I can work someplace where I won't get stepped on, or run over, I'm fine.

Getting to the point where I can concentrate that deeply, however, is a little more challenging.

Most ambient noises don't other me. The notable exception is screaming or fussing children. Don't know if it's some latent maternal instinct - or just primate male cussedness - but any commotion involving or surrounding children jumps right to the front of my brain and stays there until it's resolved.

I'm perfectly happy with complete silence, or social ambient sounds. A quiet restaurant is probably my favorite setting. First, because you can get food and do a little flirting. Second, because I find the sound of muted conversation to be soothing and oddly stimulating to whatever muse I happen to be courting. Coffee shops are OK too except for the sound of milk being steamed for cappuccino. That sound is bloody annoying! Especially when you have baristas that either don't know what they're doing - or decide to make a career out of it.

Music does NOT work for me.

In common with many other pro and semi-pro musicians, I cannot simply listen to (or ignore) music when it's being played. I'll immediately start analyzing, evaluating, critiquing, and processing it. If I don't know the piece, I'll subconsciously try to learn it. If I do know it, I'll mentally play along - or even worse, start playing with it.

And while it's great fun to come up with new and interesting musical ideas ("Hey, I want to try doing that Gregorian Chant on bagpipes and baritone sax!" -or- "Did you ever notice how you can interweave Ravel's Bolero with Howe's Battle Hymn of the Republic - and it works?") it doesn't help too much when you're trying to finish an essay on deadline.

Good lighting is important. My eyes, never that great to begin with, need all the help they can get. The important thing is it not be too bright because I'm very light sensitive.

Top quality ergonomic furniture is a plus I suppose. Wouldn't really know because I've never owned any. I have a 'good' desk and a 'good' chair. I'm happy with both. Although that may only be because I don't know any better. If I ever get clear enough to where I can comfortably blow a few grand on office furnishings I'll have to check it out. Or maybe not.

The occasional unexpected shoulder rub or cup of Earl Grey delivered by a pretty redhead (with bouncy little dog in tow) is also a welcome and very necessary addition to my work environment.

But that's a topic for a whole discussion by itself.  ;)  ;D

^For people like that, I'll just post them a link to the Getting Started section of the user manual or wiki.

Not everybody is as easygoing however.

My good and utterly charming friend Gwyneth (Gwen7 btw. Hi Gwen!) deals with it on her forum by "bopping" such messages. Bopping consists of locking the post and tossing it over to the Disallowed Posts & Questions section of her site. When you go there, there's a nice little pop-up that answers the question "Why did my post end up here?"

Things that will get you "bopped" are clearly spelled out in the forum rules section - which you supposedly read because you needed to agree to it before you were allowed to post.

Some things on the bop list (besides the usual obscene/illegal/etc. stuff) include:

Crying Wolf - saying things like ***EMERGENCY*** in the headline when it's something that clearly isn't.

Excessive Noise - entering headlines that include things like HEEELLLLPPP!!!  and WTF????

Plus one that cracks me up:

Anatomy Lesson - referring to an entire individual (or group) as any specific part, or parts, of the human anatomy.

----

Makes me wonder what would happen if I said: Boy are these people ever a complete bunch of lungs!

Hmmm...gonna have to try it.  ;D

ah, good advice, 40hz. i really didn't know what i was doing with the wd40, it was just an act of desperation. but it worked - for now, at least.

next time i'll try proper contact cleaner or something.

No shame in that. I've used WD40 for just about everything short of a salad dressing. It's great stuff. Cheap, readily available, and works as advertised.

How many things can you say that about?  ;D

Even though I agree that answers such as "Google it" or "RTFM" are useless and rude, sometimes I can see why people using these replies may be annoyed. I'm frequenting the XDA forums (phone OS/software development), more specifically this thread: http://forum.xda-develope...m/showthread.php?t=829734 and the same questions are asked over and over and over again. The forum has a rather simple, yet sufficient "Search this thread" function, which is apparently not used much.

I deal with a similiar problem on a forum I'm a moderator for.

From my experience, that sort of behavior seems largely confined to first time visitors. And the last thing I ever want to do (no matter how frustrated I get) is come down like a ton of bricks on some first-timer who is merely trying to get a question answered.

So rather than bang my head against the wall, I went and stored a bunch of canned FAQ-type responses in a clipping utility. Now, whenever I get a repeat question, I'll just paste a repeat answer and call it a day. I do, however, also include boilerplate that politely points out the same information is available elswhere along with the link to it.

So far, I've only had few cases where the same person continuously neglected to first look at the FAQ section after that. But rather than be rude to these people (who are obviously brain-damaged and deserving of pity) I just paste them additional canned responses - and hope for the best.

(as Renegade said) thanks for the info, J-Mac.

the odd thing is that i was sure the left button had failed on this MX Revolution. for several days it had behaved randomly, but now it seems perfectly fine. honestly, it WAS unusable and if it was anything like that now, i'd have hit it with a hammer out of frustration.

so, for all the tips on repairing the micro-switch, maybe all you really need is a very small amount of oil dripped over the button - i mean, inside the mouse, just over the white trigger on the micro-switch.

...

next time there's a failing micro-switch maybe it's worth risking a tiny drop of oil (WD-40). it made it worse at first but after a couple of days leaving the mouse to one side it has magically fixed it.

It probably worked because while the WD40 did dissolve whatever gunk was affecting the proper operation of the switch, it left behind enough of itself that a good electrical contact couldn't be made.

You're a lot better off buying a can of foaming contact cleaner, available in lubricating and non-lubricating formulas. (For switches. get lubricating.) The key word to look for is foaming. It's designed for use in electronic service applications, so it will clean and evaporate quickly and completely. The lubricant they use is formulated to be electrically conductive and the solvent is known to be safe around electronics. WD40 isn't really intended to be used that way. With WD40 there's a small chance it might dissolve something you don't want it to. It can also damage certain plastics. And because it leaves a residue (and continues working) it may take some time before that type of damage becomes apparent.

Note: Sometimes the lubricating versions are called "tuner cleaner." It's the same thing. Grab it at any RadioShack. One can will last you forever.

Wow... It lists a lot... But it's almost TOO big. It would work better with a piece of software to help you sort through them. Actually, it wouldn't be too hard to do... Hmmm...

Yeah! It does incite curiosity. I'm about 50% of the way to forking over the $15 they want for the data set just to check it out.

These downloads are password protected and free to anyone producing a mirror or free utility. If you produce a commercial/shareware utility please contact me to discuss options. If you don't fall into any of these categories and want to download any of these files you will need to either make a donation of $15/year or more via PayPal (or E-mail me) and you will be provided with the login details which will change at the beginning of each year. The donation will go towards researching new and existing entries for the database and creating these files. Since making these files available for download they've been available free of charge and downloaded thousands of times. I believe they are unique as to my knowledge, no similar site offers such a resource as the lists they offer are on-line only.

Since I don't want to be beholden, I'll probably just make the donation. It's pretty reasonable for the amount of data that's been collected even though 4wd raises the very valid caveat that it's only as good as the vetting that's been done on it. However, supposedly WinPatrol uses it, so it can't be too wrong too often.

Why anybody would want to waste the effort of 100+ words just to say "no" to a complete stranger is beyond my ability to comprehend.

Well, it's like this — and you may or may not agree and, frankly, whether or not you do is of little consequence to me because I, personally, have never contributed any post that is other than fatuous — but having nothing useful to offer results in people trying to seem as if they might have something worth saying, notwithstanding their inability to contribute meaningfully, and thus they are prompted — often without a great deal of forethought (possibly because that is something of which they are incapable) — to enter somewhat empty and often unpleasant material that some might say would be best left aside and which is always negative.

If you did give details there is also less risk of getting caught by a postcount hunter or other fools. They will stay clear and opposite post might attract those who actually know something about the problem, have experience other than using Google. Also until you appear somewhat convincing, deliver details, the thing about "I have tried this" is not worth much. Did you really? or is the real question where did you screw up? Not that many like to announce they skipped 50% of a guide to solve something. I don't know that forum but on a typical tech forum declarations about what has been done is to be taken with a grain of salt. Often related to "I will find a faster way to solve this than..." There are several filtering mechanisms at work ;)

Of course, none of that would be necessary if the people that didn't want to answer a question - or didn't have enough information to answer it - simply didn't respond at all.

Unfortunately, there's a large number of self-appointed "forum police" types that seem to feel the need to post at length about why they will not answer a question being asked.

Interestingly, these same people never seem to do anything other than remonstrate and lecture people about the "proper way" to use what they seem to feel is their forum. You seldom see them actually provide answers.

Why anybody would want to waste the effort of 100+ words just to say "no" to a complete stranger is beyond my ability to comprehend.

kball guys mention what it's like to "draw" with a trackball. is it impossible or maybe it's very intuitive - i can't really imagine.

Imagine yourself trying to draw a detailed portrait, on a window, with a bar of soap, while standing on an icy sidewalk.  ;D

i can see how advantageous a trackball would be - travelling across screen distance easily, so i'm tempted to get one for that. but if they are terrible to draw with, then i have to rule them out.

Better rule them out then. A quality drawing tablet is best for that. (And I'll bet you have one too! ;D)

------------

Note: there's nothing to say you can't have more than one pointing device. I'll use a trackball for some things. But I still keep a regular mouse attached for everything else - which is S.O.P. for all but the most rabid trackball aficionados.
