A hazardous serum that turns people into zombies, the product of a failed military experiment to create super soldiers, is accidentally released and infects a group of friends when they eat ice cream that has come in contact with the serum.
Sponsored by Edy's Slow Churned Ice Cream...LOL! (I am serious!)

Sounds like a nod to the 1985 movie "The Stuff"

Living Room / A 360TB disc that holds data for more than 1 million years?
« Last post by Edvard on July 13, 2013, 04:00 PM »
Say it's so, c|net, please say it is...

In the future, we might be able to save our history to a glass storage medium that could potentially outlive humankind. The new type of memory also touts mind-blowing specifications, such as 360TB per disc data capacity and the ability to withstand extreme temperatures up to 1,832 Fahrenheit.

They're calling it the "real-world version of Superman's 'Memory Crystals'".

The geek porn (PDF whitepaper) here:

... and more from the website here:

Or search for "Superman Memory Crystals"; it's all over the web this week.

Alternatively, a small badge (perhaps an infinity symbol or Hex63 of the I Ching ("After Completion") to indicate the person has passed on, plus disabling further personal messages on the account and deleting any other contact information would be the easiest and best thing to do? That way anybody who was curious about the person after reading their posts would learn he or she is no longer with us.

Actually, my first thought was that some sort of indication should be made on their profile; thanks for thinking alike, 40Hz   ...and great ideas too.
I know there are online spaces where you can store your logins and passwords and a few pre-written emails to be released on notification of your passing, so I'm thinking something along the lines of a "final post" stored in profile-space that's only unlocked when the "time comes" might be a good idea, but may not be practical with the forum software.

A memorial section in the forum would not be out of line.
Only thing I've ever seen done is along the lines of what OP has already accomplished. I'm not really sure a dedicated Obit section is really needed. It's too much the constant reminder, and a bit dark (as in tends to dampen mood).

Ah, differences of opinion... I did ask for thoughts after all.  :-[
After thinking about it a bit, I'm kinda shying away from the idea of a dedicated memorial section as I agree it might creep some people out, but then again in certain cultures, funerals can be quite the party, as it's a celebration of the departed moving on to a better place, and a reminder to the living to do what little livin' they may have left.

So, my vote goes with a wisely-worded mention here in Living Room, with some indication in their profile of their passing and a link to the relevant post.  May be especially nice if immediate family/friends could be passed the link as well.

P.S. I just had a thought: Some folks just might be thinking, "Well, maybe this is really too much to get worked up about.  This IS just a software forum, for  cryin' out loud, people come and go all the time."  Well... yes... sorta, but for those that have been around here for long enough, it becomes obvious that under the surface, it's a little more than "just a software forum".  Many of us here have come to know each other almost like extended family, or intimate pen-pals at the very least, and the passing of one of our own can carry the same weight of pain and sadness that the death of a close friend or relative can.  So to honor the memory of their contributions to the life of this site and the relationships we all forged together is entirely appropriate and worth a little effort, if only to aid the process of grieving and closure.  Personally, I'd like that.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Dock should not 'land grab'

Or is he talking about a second monitor?  I've seen this happen before where a dock on one screen (across top or bottom)  reserves dock space across the other monitor as well, so running an application in fullscreen mode on another monitor doesn't get the full display.

Tonight I just learned of the passing of longtime DC member Thunder7.  I had been thinking of his huge posts of interesting links that just kind of stopped one day, and wondered what had begotten of him.  I found his Deviantart page (http://thunder7.deviantart.com/) and discovered a post from one of his friends anouncing that he had passed away a year and a half ago:
~Priori-Incantartem Mar 30, 2013  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
Just wanted to let everyone on here Know that Paul "Thunder 7" has passed away. I believe he passed on Dec. 25 2011. I hadn't been on here in so long I didn't realize no one knew.
There was also a link to his obituary here: http://lacrossetribu...2f-0019bb2963f4.html but it seemed to say so little about the man who was (as we all are in our own way) a unique and interesting individual.

After speaking with Mouser on IRC about it, the question came up about how to best honor our fallen comrade, the best way to approach the subject on the forum, and whether it might be a good idea to make a special place to announce such things in the future.
Your thoughts and opinions on this matter are hereby humbly requested.

Rest In Peace, Thunder7.

I've been searching around the OpenDNS blog and website for clues, and I get their newsletters in the email, but haven't found anything directly related to PRISM or sundry.  One thing they do offer that's security-conscious is DNS encryption via their open-source DNSCrypt tool, which (IMO) gives them a shuffle over to the good guys side.  Maybe we'll see a position post from them in the near future, I don't know.  Until then I'll be keeping an eye out for any outside reports.

Also, if anyone here is using StartPage for searching, you may have noticed their announcement of an encrypted email service they are calling StartMail.  I've signed up as a beta tester and now you can too:

Check it out here -> https://www.startmail.com

(p.s. It's not going to be free, but as f0dder and others have said; if it's free, you're not the customer, you're the product)

Download this:
http://gnuwin32.sour...net/packages/sed.htm

Put it in somewhere in your %PATH%, unless the installer does it for you (haven't tested).

Then do this:
sed -i '/^$/d' filewithblanklines.txt

With a little registry magic, you can even add it as a context menu item.  Look here:
http://www.howtogeek...click-menu-in-vista/

My registry knowledge is a bit rusty, or else I'd tell you exactly how with a .reg file so it only opens up when you right-click TXT files.
Any takers?

Quite the hullabaloo over this PRISM stuff, eh?

In case you're interested (and those who are probably already know much of this), a new website has started up which lists alternatives to your favorite browsers, social media, etc.  Most I knew about already, many I didn't.  A bit biased towards the GNU/Linux/BSD crowd, but then again, ain't it always?

Opt out of PRISM, the NSA’s global data surveillance program. Stop reporting your online activities to the American government with these free alternatives to proprietary software.

Non-Windows Software / Re: Window Managers and Terminals for *NIX
« Last post by Edvard on June 29, 2013, 03:04 AM »
Been using Xfce since the 2.something days.  Something about it, I keep coming back to.
Never got into tiling window managers.  I can see the attractiveness, but it just never clicked with me.  I tried i3, as you suggested in IRC, but it's the same with that as other TWM's.  Too long with floating windows, I guess, though I appreciate i3's ability to toggle floating windows.

My go-to terminal is the standard Xfce4-terminal just because it's there whenever I install Xfce, though I have used LXTerm with OpenBox, which is very nice.  On boxes that have to be minimal, I go with Urxvt.  I've heard a lot of good things about Terminator, though I haven't tried it.

General Software Discussion / Re: The Non-Notepad(MS) Thread!
« Last post by Edvard on June 27, 2013, 10:25 PM »
Yay, another "my favorite editor" thread.

No forum is complete without one...  ;)

GNU nano, anyone?
(For edits aside coding stuff, like config files.)

I LOVE nano.  It's my go-to terminal text editor (previously stuck on Midnight Commander's built-in editor).

For Windows, I'll vote for either Notepad2 or Editor2 which comes bundled with Xplorer2.  The version bundled with Xplorer2 Lite is not unicode-capable, but the one in Xplorer2 Pro is.  If you're so inclined, you can download the Pro trial and copy out the Editor2 executable.  AFAIK, it doesn't need to be registered.  For some reason, I feel that's cheating, but to each his own...

So... what makes it special?  (from the editor2.txt file):

So what else is in it for the standalone user?

* MULTITHREADED SDI. This technicality means that multiple instances of the editor can be open at the same time with minimum impact on your system resources. You can open new windows or clone the same file in multiple windows. By default Editor2 runs in a single instance mode too, unless the new /P command line option is specified (see below).

* SEARCH AND REPLACE WITH BINARY CHARACTERS. The search and replace dialogs can now accept "binary" characters like tabs and linefeeds. You either select them from those predefined or type them in yourself in the format $xx, where xx is the hexadecimal byte number you want inserted (e.g. return = $0D). If you want a single $ just escape it with $$.

* NEW COMMAND LINE ARGUMENTS. /L:nn will load a document and jump directly to line # nn. /P forces a separate process — by default Editor2 runs in single instance mode. You don't really have any incentive to force non-single instance since the memory usage gets worse with each new window. But it is there nevertheless. So the overall command line is (all arguments optional):
   Editor2 /S:<name> /V /E /L:nn /P <filename>

* DUAL BOOKMARK. The single bookmark with <Ctrl+F8> was good but not good enough for jumping between 2 spots. Now the store bookmark command will remember the 2 latest bookmarked positions and <F8> will cycle among them. Very neat. <Shift+F8> will extend the selection.

* FIND ALL. The find dialog has an option to find all occurences of the searched string. These are hilighted in one stroke for all the text. There's a command to cancel the hilighting too.

* CHARACTER CASE CHANGE. Changes the selection to uppercase or lowercase, see Edit menu.

* EXTERNAL VIEWER. This is configurable from the options dialog. Hitting <F12> saves the document and opens it in the specified external viewer (e.g. for previewing the HTML you are typing). Note that in general you need the full path to the external viewer and if it contains spaces you should enclose it in "quotation marks".

You will have noticed that all these new features and some others (escapable I/O, autocompleting combo boxes and other subtle usability improvements) have increased the pork in Editor2 whose size leapt to just under the 100KB barrier. But it's pounds well spent, I say! Enjoy!

I'm a big distortion/overdrive freak, but the hell if I'm going to judge quality by a fnikcug YOUTUBE VIDEO.
If I have the time and money to actually go and buy a new instrument, the music store is the first place I go, not the internet.  Too bad most of those are going the way of most brick-and-mortars.   :-\

Got an Illy 2-pack gift set for Father's day.   :-*
I never buy it as I can't afford the stuff normally, so my wife and son buying some for me is quite the treat.

Generally speaking, I've found that paying more for your coffee is a fairly low-stakes gamble.  9 times out of 10, you get what you paid for.  I have NEVER stumbled across a budget-brand coffee that was premium-brand good, and I have never bought something for 10+ bucks a pound that brewed up like horse spit.

My pet annoyance: People who jump to a conclusion about why someone or something is the way they/it are, and then they proceed to go and judge or get annoyed over that reasoning even though it never existed outside of their own minds.

Someone I love very, very much has a bad habit of interrupting me in conversation to make a point that I supposedly lent credence to, except that I didn't; said person merely heard enough of my sentence to come to their own (entirely different) conclusion and interrupted accordingly. :nono2:

What annoys me over and over and...

Non-answers!

Question: Is it raining hard where you are?

Answer:  I have a state of the art umbrella!

That sounds EXACTLY like when politicians "answer" questions.  Which is a HUGE annoyance of mine.  Just ANSWER THE DAMN QUESTION!!

General Software Discussion / Re: notepad++
« Last post by Edvard on June 11, 2013, 09:24 PM »
Yes, I did as soon as I heard they were offering a Linux version.  Doesn't look half bad, but I couldn't find the functions I need.
I know it has rectangular or "block" selection, but it's not conveniently available as a modifier key (hold down control while selecting, for example).

The text editor functions I need/want:

Rectangular/column/block edit mode
Bookmark lines with regex search
Invert bookmarks
Perform actions on bookmarked lines (copy, delete, move, etc)
Automatic incremental block fill (most can do multi-line text entry; not the same)

Then again, this isn't my thread, and it hasn't been that much of a bother to post about otherwise.  Notepad++ and Textpad 5 did all of these quite handily.  Geany and/or SciTe do most of what I need in Linux, but still...  :-\

But you are right, I don't have to accept sucky development, which is why I'm headed for Linuxville.....
Completely your choice... but bad developers exist in Linux-land also.  It's not the OS... it's the developers making the software.

I'll vouch for that, and I've taken up permanent residence in Linuxville.  To this day, I have not found the perfect text editor.  All vi/emacs arguing aside, I had been looking for a decent replacement for Notepad++ or Textpad 5.  No dice.  All missing one or more of the most important features, and half made with hideous toolkits or idiotic dependencies.  I'm told Kate has everything I ask for, but I'll be damned before I install the whole damn KDE desktop just for a text editor.

Contro: Glad to see you found a solution.  I rather liked Notepad++ as a free replacement for Textpad 5, I'll check out PSPad next time I boot to my Windows partition.

Then there's the headaches from lack of caffeine....

Ah, yes... the reason I kicked in the first place.  Caffeine withdrawal headaches are the worst pain I have ever felt in my life.  I'm sure it's NOTHING compared to childbirth, but I did get the feeling something was trying it's level best to burst out of my eyesockets when I had them.  Had another cup today... best get back to the wagon tomorrow.  :o

Web-based or standalone?

For web-based solutions, I have used these three:
QRStuff.com for the sheer amount of pre-set options.  Raster formats only unless you sign up.
Littleidiot.be's site allows generating to vector SVG, EPS, and PDF formats.
Kerem Erkan's site does the same, but offers hi-res TIFF files as an option, and his Android and iPhone apps come highly recommended (I've never used either, personally).

For standalone solutions, I've only used Fukuchi Kentaro's QREncode for Linux.  No gui, but it works well and can output PNG,EPS,SVG,ANSI,ANSI256,ASCII,ASCIIi,UTF8, and ANSIUTF8 formats.  A Windows version is available at the Google Code site with re-usable MSVC components available.

Never used anything for smartphone dev stuff, so not sure where to go for that.
