There are a couple of reasons, but the most important one is that I'm expecting my first child begin February.

Hey, congratulations!

And we normally move house in march or april.

As one does. I'm the same: I change my car every time the ashtray gets full  :D

Or why not use this as an opportunity to learn Java?

Is it feasible to do this in Python or Ruby or some other scripting language? And, I'm guessing a core of code is written that can be easily carried over to another platform. True?

It's a bit too much of a nebulous question. It totally depends on what you want to do - if you want to knock up some little web app that runs in any platform's browser, then sure. But if you want to create a bit more of a full-on true desktop application, you're going to have to move away from scripting. Especially if you have any type of performance requirements.

I want to write desktop software that works on all three platforms (Windows, Mac, Linux). What is the best/easiest way to do that?

Java. For a lot of reasons: stable, well supported, and some wonderful IDEs available. And for just about anything you need to do, there's already probably a class that can get you there.

N.A.N.Y. 2011 / Re: NANY 2011 Teaser: Auspex - a Windows Productivity App
« Last post by timns on December 05, 2010, 11:52 AM »
Running this seems to break windows-key functionality on Windows 7 (can someone verify?)

Win + anything in particular? It may be app-specific of course. I did do some general fixing a while back but if you can find something reproducible I'll look into it right away

I did some testing and here are the results:

If main program window is open and active, then everything works.
If the window is open but inactive, then winkey to trigger the start menu does not work. Win+[anything else] still works though.
If the window is minimized to tray, then weird stuff happens. Sometimes the win key would stop working all together, sometimes it would get stuck in the down position.

Hope this helps!

It does indeed, thank you.

You may be better off getting the app itself from here:

http://jmol.sourceforge.net/download/

That way you have a better chance of capturing a really nice quality animation.

Ok, now it is working, but the popup is nowhere near my cursor. It's quite a bit above and to the left.

What application are you running it with?

Sounds like you might be :)

I think that the autopopup does not work for everyone when the app is minimized to the system tray. Maybe you could turn that off and give 'er another try please, till I can track that down.

And of course the idea is you would likely add some Replacement texts too (acronyms for longer phrases that you'd like the program to add for you as you type)

Just a few I have set up:
pov -> point of view
jic -> just in case
mol -> more or less
utd -> up-to-date
etc etc etc

If they don't work either, please let me know, since it sounds like something ain't right there

Fuzzy is probably a simple bug... and in fact I've improved the matching quite a bit ready for the new build.

(Fewer false positives, less triggers from things like punctuation and numbers, better phrase detection)

So I'll get a new build out shortly.

Re: the prompt window, that's a tricky one - I ask the current application where its caret is, and then try to pop up just to the right and below. In most cases the reply seems to be quite good, but for instance in Thunderbird I always get the top-left of the edit window. I'll do some more research.

Thanks!

Thanks for the reassurance. Who are these pinheads who make such idiotic decisions?

I've had a little 5TB backup thugummy running for about 18 months now and it's been rock-solid. I think I've only logged onto it directly a few times to fool around with the settings.

All my other PC's should be so reliable!

I seem to get a lot of letters that aren't even in any of the words. Letters that aren't in many words to begin with, such as X.
 (see attachment in previous post)
Also, here's a slightly humorous result of a spin:
 (see attachment in previous post)

Yes, the random letters are deliberate, otherwise it's just too darn easy to make all the words. This will be more clear when the "player guide" gets cranked out. Don't suppose anyone wants to write it, do they?

And... oh my. I should warn users that there is definitely the potential for some naughty words  :-[

wow that is really clever.. and interesting.

it could REALLY do with a tutorial/instructions.

this seems like a really novel word game to me.. and one of those things that those word game playing lovers would trample over their first born kids to play.

Thanks! And yes, it still needs all the frippery as well as some more development. At the moment I think the fanciest feature is the motion blur on the reels  :-[

Are these settings supposed to be fully functional yet?
 (see attachment in previous post)
  • No matter what you set the option to, it will always show the splash screen.
  • Run when Windows starts doesn't work.
  • Minimize to tray on close works to send it to the tray once, but upon restoring it from the tray, you can't click the buttons to minimize to taskbar or close it back to tray...and all the rest of the controls are disabled. If you minimize it after by clicking the taskbar button instead, then restore it by clicking the taskbar button again, the buttons are clickable again, but the close button doesn't do anything.

Not as entirely fully functional as they will be  :-[ - but the minimize stuff should definitely be working! Can you confirm that you're running build 65 please?

Cound not be without RegEx...I suggest PowerGrep.
Either you're typing too fast or there's a faunt in your RegEx.
You should try this neat new thing, Auspex…

-cranioscopical (November 29, 2010, 09:55 AM)

Dang, you're right. I'll simply add another autocorrection to that marvellous piece of software we call 'Auspex' using a regex such as cou[k|n]d -> could :)

but you guys give such good feedback

And here's a note from Albert Ross…

The flash screen is striking and I don't have to Scrabble to see it.
...65 is fast!
Fuzzies look good.

But:
  • Run Auspex
  • Use it in the state in which it opens
  • Works OK

  • Minimize to task bar
  • Works OK

  • Restore from task bar
  • Works OK

  • Close button -> tray
  • No longer works

-cranioscopical (November 29, 2010, 09:38 AM)
:o

Ok I'll look into zat right away. Do thank Albert for me.

Update: it Replacements still work, but completions do not. I imagine the popup window is simply not being allowed to show.

Good catch.

v 65 :

I like the new icon and splash screen - well done nudone ! and also particularly the fuzzy matching

Yes, ol' nudone has some real talent.

Thanks for the reply - the fuzzy matching is still under development, but you guys give such good feedback, I wanted to get it out there so that you spot all the bugs that I miss. :-[

Cound not be without RegEx. Like kyrathaba, I used RegEx in this year's NANY, in my case to allow some pretty clever pattern matching when tracking user's input to see if it can be expanded / replaced on the fly.

If anyone needs probably THE most powerful RegEx search and replace tool, I suggest PowerGrep.

http://www.powergrep.com/

I have no affiliations - just a satisfied user.

Build 65
New Features

    * A shiny new icon and splash screen logo from DC's very own nudone
    * Fuzzy matching! For example, if you start typing 'cump...' Auspex will now suggest similar words that it holds in its list (e.g. complete, computer etc.) - but only if no exact matches exist.

It's fast, too.

    * General searching improved - when you're looking for matches, Replacements will also be suggested

Known Issues

    * Fuzzy matching sometimes offers duplicate words in the pop-up

For those of us with an atrophied vestigial third arm: what you do is jam the thumb into that little pocket.

This saves the arm waving about wildly and hitting you in the face when running to catch the last bus.
