wonder how it compares to FileHamster - it does seem to be more aimed at text files or 'office' documents
looking at their site -
_______________________________

(Possible) Pros

  • Partial file backup (or whatever you call it) a pro as long as it works naturally!
Archives are very compact because they are compressed and the whole file is only stored once with all other revisions only storing the changes to the file.

(Possible) Cons

  • "Auto purge system prevents the archives from growing too large." (do I get to control that 'purging'?)
  • Hasnt been updated since 2007 :(

.. Filebox Extender itself, which is free and is being updated, ...

- ehh? Free, yes, but not being updated.

Please note: We no longer support FileBox eXtender. We make both the binary builds and source code available for download here for your convenience, please do not ask us for any support or improvements.

But "a terrific program" it is

well they said they werent updating it and then they brought out a vista compatible version . . but I guess there is no development as such

I just prefer PS Hot Folders  ;)
havent head of this one - but last updated May 2007 :tellme: (is it perfect!?)

I'm certainly happy myself at the moment with FileBox Extender

Each word must be at least two characters long.

should really report it /make a request elsewhere . . it's on my todo list FWIW . .  :-\

of course it works if you put it so "Windows 7"  :-[ lol

Way cool!
I like the funky looks on some of these.
For a more 'Old School' version, try the Dirkon*.

It has that eastern block look! or is it just a 1979 look? - a combo of both probably ;D

I think it would be worth considering some way to zoom into a selected area of an image (with the MDBU setting at 'Fit to window')...
You mean > 100% zoom? Checking out pixels? A bit tricky to wheel the mouse while one button is held down... If you have a good idea for the handling let me know.

With the mouse wheel [+Control key] I was thinking of the way FF zooms - in increments related to the wheel clicks (so no, I wasnt thinking of 100%). I find that an easy way of zooming a webpage anyway.
With an image - it would be ideal if it zoomed keeping the point where the arrow is as centre of the image, that way you would have a selective zoom.

FastStone viewer uses Ctrl+drag mouse to select an area - this area will then be zoomed to size of window.
. . .
Not sure now if it is possible but I made a note for v8.40.

another idea would be to make it possible to toggle the 'Shrink to fit window' when the preview is open - not exactly what I was looking for but close!

[edit] NOT wanting you to abandon the quest ! but maybe it's better/easier to do it in smaller steps ? - I dunno anything about programming . . [/edit]

You know, I never even looked for such a utility - mainly because I rarely correspond with people who speak languages that use such characters. No excuse, I guess. It would be good to have such an app. I'll go check out the links I see posted now.   8)

hey, I was only kidding Jim :) mind you there is a FARR plugin (Character table - in FARR type cc) that gets you lots of exotic characters, but funny enough doesnt show any vowels with umlauts here (maybe cause I already have them on my keyboard)

Anyways we're going well off the annoyed topic here ;)

FastStone viewer uses Ctrl+drag mouse to select an area - this area will then be zoomed to size of window.

Acrobat and other graphics programmes use a more complicated system:
Control+Spacebar+drag mouse -> selected area is again zoomed to window size.
Control+Spacebar+click mouse -> will zoom image in increments (for each click).
Add Alt:
Control+Alt+Spacebar+click mouse -> will reduce image in increments.

I'd love to see a viewer that would
  • show files in the order they are sorted (no slideshow, just some key to move on or back) - which sounds like what you've planned
  • allow easy zooming in to selected area (I can see this could be problematic if you're showing so many different formats) e.g. Ctrl+Drag to select area to zoom in - or Ctrl+mousewheel, but that usually doesnt allow zooming into particular area - could be really great if it zoomed into where the mouse arrow was

1. yes, it works that way
2. XY's MDBU feature (MouseDownBlowUp: mouse button down on a thumbnail in the file list or on the preview on the preview tab) will always attempt to show the preview in the largest possible size (up to 100%). If this is larger than your screen you can pan around the image by moving the mouse.

I missed your reply here Don (thanks) so here's a belated response:

The 'MouseDownBlowUp' setting has to be changed in Options - it's either full-size or fit to window - no easy way to change.

I think it would be worth considering some way to zoom into a selected area of an image (with the MDBU setting at 'Fit to window') - you could be making XY the first (and maybe for many, the only) port of call in sorting/organising images  - especially in connection with your posts about tagging Re: Why is it so hard to find a decent image organizer?

As I say I dont know of any other file manager that offers this combination and as for image viewers/organisers, once you're used to a good file manager, unless you're a pro photographer, or actually editing pictures, why should you have to change from that file manager...
This is also the case for people who work with images, especially mixed in with other files. I deal with a lot of scanned images (it's not fine-art but needs to be a certain standard) - I want to manage them: sort them & get a quick look at the quality of important areas of the scan.
Then if needs be I open them in programme of choice (courtesy xy's portable file associations )

I'd have exactly the same requirements for photos though (personal) - but I will be wanting to tag many of them so I'll have to have a closer look at the last few posts in above thread

But not all of those kiddies have the patience to memorize ASCII or fire up charmap!

You are right; I forgot that an American keyboard is different from mine. On my Danish keyboard the "¨" is the last bütton before "Enter"!

Unfortunately I am guilty of the same. Unless I have the ASCII code for the character memorized it just gets the letter typed without anything added to modify it. Very much a PITA to type those characters regularly on a standard US keyboard.

hey! I thought all dc members loved finding obscure little programmes to make this kind of thing easier!

I have to say I love having a german keyboard - I have three extra characters (üöä) on the right-hand side that I can combine with the Control key for shortcuts - especially handy for a left-handed-mouser-mouse-user (only one mouser around here I guess)

The uber-retarded T9 predictive text thingie - atleast the version on my Nokia. I have to keep teaching it the same words over and over because of its limited memory for storing custom words, it has the most bizarre words inbuilt, no editing functionality - all in all a total CITAG!  :wallbash:

I gave up on it myself (also a nokia :-\)

When the INTJ starts doing work on the GUI, the ENFP that can sometimes seem like they are capable of reading minds, only because they are good at understanding how people think, will notice the flaws in the design and how it isn't "mentally ergonomic".

sometimes I think there's a distinct lack of ENFP's in the software world - working on GUI's at any rate . .
It's an area I'd like to be involved in myself
but apart from not being a coder, I dont qualify - I got ENFJ

DC Website Help and Extras / Problem with mark selected (unread messages) read
« Last post by tomos on August 06, 2009, 04:33 PM »
after being away since Saturday:-
three pages of unread messages this evening - I checked the third page first and then select the visible messages using the topmost selection-box on the right, then I click 'Mark selected read'

I'm left left with about ten threads instead of the expected two pages
I leave it a while and come back and refresh ( - or I clicked unread messages link again - sorry, I cant remember which) and the expected two pages are there)
I would have forgotten about it but it happened after I repeated the op for second unread page (again about ten thread instead of the expected full page)

hope that makes sense, no big deal but thought I'd report it while here  :)

mouser, a sort of banal side-question - did you use your label printer here ? (or how are they printed?)
The printed text, especially with bold & underlined, give the notes a lot of authority :) (maybe even the font makes a difference :tellme: I'm serious about font btw - a very "don't mess with me" font)
