General Software Discussion / Re: An easy software to make street/road maps?
« Last post by tomos on September 08, 2009, 05:04 PM »
If you are looking at commercial software like ESRI's then the Maptitude mapping software is worth checking out.
price is $495 (not complaining, but definitely for the pro market!) - dont know how it compares with ArcViewGIS which I think has been the standard(?) - I cant even find the price on their site . .

On a different note:
If you have Illustrator, someone recommended these tutorials - "From GIS to the Desktop" - they look good too

I was going to suggest looking for someone to join in on the project too - that way you could possibly get someone doing it for love + whatever cut of possible profits & maybe get much higher standard stuff

btw why wouldnt it sell!?
If you going to go for it - then go for it man!

General Software Discussion / Re: Has anyone tried Perfect Utilities ?
« Last post by tomos on September 08, 2009, 02:37 PM »
from the same thread I linked to above
Has anyone actually tried Perfect Utilities? Going to the original link the same company seem to be selling WinUtilities 7 and giving away Perfect Utilities 2 for free but from what I have read they are identical (apart from the WU skin pack).

Are these good products or are they best avoided? (Yeah I know most RegCleaners should be avoided unless you are REALLY discriminating in what you let them delete but what about the rest of the tools).

FH does support a 'tiered' set of revisions (not sure if it's in the free version, though).  They call it "DynamicRevisionHistory" and it's buried in the options for a 'watch'.  It seems to be on by default

yes, it's on by default in paid version - even for backups already setup - I cant believe it - it's newish I think,
that's the last thing I want  :tellme:
I've posted in FH forums asking for more info but the help file says:

Dynamic Revision History when set to True will clean your revisions for you based on what day they were made on. This will help to keep your library from being overfilled with a large amount of old revisions.

First day - All revisions will be kept.
Next day and each day for one week - One revision per day for the week
Next week - One revision per week for the same month
Next month - One revision per month up to the end of the first year
Next year - One revision per year

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: SuperDuperRoboPrinter
« Last post by tomos on September 08, 2009, 07:29 AM »
Hi awopbamboo
I'm just after trying it out (win XP SP2)

I tried with PDF JPEG TIFF files

  • PDF goes to printer nicely
  • With the PDF: When I click 'Check now' the 'Finished' message shows immediately but about a second later a window shows briefly - I can only see the frame and the menubar but it's Adobe Reader and is opened in the background with no file - if Reader is already open it doesnt change (or open new instance) but shows briefly on top as described above. None of which bothers me - just reporting in case it helps any!
  • Both image files were not sent to the printer at all. They opened in windows explorer ('picture & fax viewer') - both these filetypes are associated with the Directory Opus viewer so that could possibly be a Dopus [version 8] problem too. On second attempt only one file opened but otherwise no change

I can experiment later with changing file associations to see if that helps

mentioned in this and previous post fwiw

I used some of the functions of Perfect Utilities with no problems. Most of the other functions, which are disabled by default, I use other programs for. I also didn't use all the functions that are enabled by default.

There are some things in the program that are unique. Just have to look around a bit to get familiar with it.

[ . . ] apologies if the above post came off rude.
no, no need, it didnt at all

I'm going to apologise in advance for this question :) :
do you have a summary of your current system(s) anywhere on dc ? (apologies cause if it's there I should probably know about it)

It will be interesting to reread your post after I've tried AF again.

I still can't fathom what's awesome about AutoFocus even with the Revised version but when I read it, the model of the site immediately came to mind.

have you tried it yet Paul?!

and no,
I'm not saying it's awesome :) it actually hasn't suit my needs for the last while anyways, but I'm looking forward to trying out the 'new' version and I guess I just pointing out you cant really knock something like that till you've tried it ;)

edit/ going to give it another go . .

FARR Plugins and Aliases / Re: KlipKeeper (A FARR2 Plugin by hamradio)
« Last post by tomos on September 07, 2009, 03:12 PM »
Okay, I'm confused. What do I need to do? ...
siouxdax,
it looks  like you need to download the dll on this page
http://e.craft.free....r/farr/FScript/1.19/

then:

1. grab the latest fscript.dll from ecaradec's page [link above]
2. rename it to fscript.dll
3. exit farr
4. replace any copies of fscript.dll in your farr plugins subdirectories with this new one.
(if you have multiple fscript-based plugins installed, there may be more than one copy of the dll! dont leave any files like fscript_bakup.dll or fscript.dllbackup in the directories or those dll's might get loaded)
5. restart farr

I think it should be clear up to step #4 at least?
If you've trouble there finding those dlls report back & someone will help

Hi All,

I'm from the UK too (as per Carol above, and zriding).  From Basingstoke in Hampshire.  And for that reason, I see no point in sending a photo!

Whats the ratio roughly of where people are from on here?  I assume the majority are from the U.S?

well the people who are active in the forum are from all over really which is nice - there's no bias I find (bias = not quite the right word but does the job I think)
What the problem with Basingstoke and photos - not so nice?
If you did want to post a pic there's always the Show us the View Outside Your Window thread :)

as a low-tech user I'm happy about #1 -
I know I occasionally get notice to upgrade but I never keep track - well, every now & again I go to Secunia's site and get them to check.
Java then leaves the older versions (JavaRa is a godsend to tidy up), cant remember does adobe do the same with flash..

hmm hmmmph hmmmm . . . big fish LITTLE fish . .    :)

Screenshot Captor / Re: SC: Discussion of Scanning Functions
« Last post by tomos on September 06, 2009, 12:12 PM »
#2 - great
#3 - 'save as' -  what I understood from SC "save copy as" is that it will save in regular folder anyway & you have the option to save a copy elsewhere (or save copy in same folder). Say I scan into Pshop, I can save as -> folder of choice, there's only one copy (okay, there may be a temp one in temp folder as well).  Wasnt any big deal, but it would be nice to simply save scans elsewhere in folder of choice - me, I usually save them in a different folder each time I'm doing a batch of scans but obviously moving them around isnt a problem :)

Another one:-
#5 - it would be great if Ctrl+O would show whole page (i.e. Auto-fit) if nothing is selected. (I know Crt+F is 'Fit-View' but this shows image much smaller than 'Auto-fit')

« Last post by tomos on September 06, 2009, 11:13 AM »
havent used this since it was being tested

Scanning a few pages today:

1) I missed advanced options on saving as PDF - it saved a 100dpi image as a 2 MB file - (I think it didnt compress the image?) - would be great if I could regulate that on saving (or in options)
2) is there any capability to change the dpi of an image in SC? I see resize but occasionally might want to simply change resolution [very much an icing request :)]
3) option to simply 'save image as' would be nice - nearest option is 'save copy as' which eventually will involve spring cleaning
4) when I scan I dont see any progress window - I see you have one in screenshot - scratch that: it works at TWAIN setting - I get a flash of my scanner software logo, then it comes up as normal (Not using 'native scanner dialog')

Everything (auto-rotate/sharpen/WB) working very nicely :) -
for this run the large PDF's drove me away though :(

General Software Discussion / Re: What is your preferred font?
« Last post by tomos on September 06, 2009, 07:24 AM »
Ariel was primarily designed to be a screen font.

I always thought Arial was a fairly straight rip-off of Helvetica,
but I see Wikipedia agrees with you:-

Though nearly identical to Linotype Helvetica in both proportion and weight (see figure), the design of Arial is in fact a variation of Monotype Grotesque,[3] and was designed for IBM's laserxerographic printer.[2] Subtle changes and variations were made to both the letterforms and the spacing between characters, in order to make it more readable on screen and at various resolutions.

I would be very interested in this as well -
-
over the next few months I'm finishing two big jobs and will need to print about a hundred TIFF files and literally hundreds of PDF files.
Ideally I would like to be able to print all the files in a selected folder and to be able to include sub-folders as well
but
if I had to move the files around in order to print them I wouldnt particularly mind  :D

There are already several GUI's for MyDefrag available, for example:

yeah,
there was a bunch of them for JkDefrag, some focusing on different aspects
For 'normal' use I found the Emro one the best but havent tried MyDefrag yet - will try that GUI, thanks yksyks :)

I missed this
The Revised Autofocus System

also available in many other languages

Speaking of MyDefrag, I'm trying it out now. But it seems like it want scripts and you have to pick drives by category.
...

doesnt sound very user friendly . .

"Take chances. Enjoy the moment. Have fun working towards the future."

Not that it comes close to becoming top productive material this way but you can post this anywhere and even when you have a bad day, you can still read it. (Which is the point of affirmations. Having a set of beliefs you can fall back to when you expect yourself to be the most unproductive.)

If you prefer something more tongue-in-cheek:

"Date the moment. Take the fun to the future."

you're making a good team there Deozaan & Paul :D
