« Last post by mouser on January 10, 2014, 07:01 PM »
Thanks K!

I've added badges for everyone we have on record as having released a NANY2014 app.

You can see the list here:  https://www.donation...badges;show=nany2014

If you released a NANY2014 app and we left you off the list, speak up and let us know!

I will be emailing NANY2014 participants shortly so that I can send you out your mug gift certificates.  If you don't get an email by sunday, let me know!

That sounds like a wonderful laptop -- 3200x1800 wow.

I've been meaning to look into some scaling options with the main SC window -- let me see what I can find on the issue..

But I think that brings me to the point- I don't think that *anyone's* process is exactly the same,

i think this is true -- but that's why i think the idea of writing software to capture one particular style of working (as opposed to trying to make one organizational tool for everyone) is appealing.  The more idiosyncratic the method it captures, the more interesting it is as a software program and experiment.

jwithers, can you post a screenshot of the windows control panel tab that shows your monitor arrangement?
that is, the control panel page where you configure which monitor is #1,2,3 and where it is positioned relative to the others.

Welcome, Exhaust!

I'm glad to hear you are finding the program useful.  I keep meaning to do another round of work on it -- I think with some additional work simplifying output options and adding some conversions for youtube, and web page hosting, it could be a lot more useful.

Unfortunately I have little experience with FLV format so I don't have much guidance to offer -- in truth the different output format stuff is mostly a mystery to me.

Could you provide a little more information on how you are interested in embedding the video and into what kinds of documents?

Have you had success in embedding other video videos into such documents?

Ok so that's good -- it's capturing the full workspace correctly, it's just the grab selected region i need to fix -- that shouldn't be too hard to fix.

Stay tuned, i should have a new version before monday at the latest.

Until then you can do a workspace capture and then a CROP operation inside the program itself.

Ok, so i think i have an inkling of the issue -- so it's related to how your monitors are laid out, it must be confusing SC.

I think we can call this a bug, and i think i can fix it.

Can you test something for me -- can you try Grab Entire Workspace (Ctrl+Prtsc) and see what the resulting image looks like (maybe post it as an attachment).  I'm interested in seeing if it gets the layout of all monitors correct. Because of your layout, there should be some big white areas in the resulting rectangular image...

Welcome to the site, jwithers.

That is odd.  Grab selected region should work across all monitors.

Can you tell me a little about what actually happens?  Do you get the cross hairs and magnification window that follows you across all monitors? Or does it not even follow you across the other monitors?

Tell me a little bit more about what happens.

Thank you so much for sticking with it and not giving up on SC and posting your discoveries.

Webroot is really behaving abysmally -- I can only imagine how many people experienced what you did and just gave up.

Really bad show, Webroot

It seems like these days another common solution is to let people "log in" and identify themselves via their facebook/twitter/google id.

One thing that's really nice about wsw is the ability to have multiple stations on screen at the same time -- great if you are interested in monitoring the weather in many places at once.

Living Room / Malware attack hits thousands of Yahoo users
« Last post by mouser on January 05, 2014, 01:53 PM »
Ouch.  Be careful out there!

A malware attack hit Yahoo's advertising server over the last few days, affecting thousands of users in various countries, an Internet security firm said.

In a blog post, Fox-IT said Yahoo's servers were releasing an "exploit kit" that exploited vulnerabilities in Java and installed malware.

"Clients visiting yahoo.com received advertisements served by ads.yahoo.com," the internet security firm said. "Some of the advertisements are malicious."

N.A.N.Y. 2014 / Re: NANY 2014 Release: Process Piglet
« Last post by mouser on January 04, 2014, 12:09 PM »
It might be good to include a summary of memory usage and perhaps links to a couple of non-technical (or less technical) explanations, so that people that download that don't have an idea of how memory work have a better idea of how to use process piglet.

yes, that's a good idea, i will do so.

the other thing i will try to add is some reporting on and alerting on generic conditions that might suggest the system is having trouble with memory -- by looking at free memory and page faults, etc.  I'd love to hear any heuristics that you might suggest that would avoid false alarms.

i'm by no means an expert on windows memory issues -- so i'd really welcome help figuring out which metrics (both process-specific and system-wide) would be good for Process Piglet to pay attention to -- i'm open to performing some more involved computations, but the raw data is coming from PROCESS_MEMORY_COUNTERS_EX.

wraith i'm looking at you!!

drroggow,

If it is capturing all blank/white, instead of the screen, it's almost certainly a security program blocking screen capturing.

You just need to have your security program allow Screenshot Captor to capture the screen.

More info:

I really wish these security programs would stop this asinine default behavior.

N.A.N.Y. 2014 / Re: NANY 2014 Release: Process Piglet

Is the memory being reported the WS Private or the WS Sharable?
A good explanation that goes into it better than I can: http://cybernetnews....ory-usage-explained/

This is a good question -- the memory use statistic is a confusing thing.

In Process Piglet you can choose whether the program should look at Working Set or Virtual Memory (or an average of the two):
Screenshot - 1_4_2014 , 10_40_02 AM.png

Essentially, as I understand it, Working Set (the default metric used) is the Physical Memory actually currently being used exclusively by the given process.  This is a reasonable measure of how much of a hog the process is, and is what MS listed under "Mem Usage" in the task manager (at least on Win XP).  Now Windows will allow processes to reserve more memory and can keep some of this memory paged-out of physical ram.  The total memory being addressed by a process is the Virtual Memory size, and can sometimes be significantly larger than the physical memory use of the program.

Truthfully none of these provide a complete view of how badly a processes memory use is going to affect your computer, but as these values increase into the hundreds of megabytes, and keep growing, there's a high likelyhood you're going to start to feel the slowdown.

The aim of Process Piglet is to spot conditions that look like they might be of concern, and rely on user to decide if they really are something to worry about.

DesktopCoral / Re: if end the explorer and restart

Try this, start DesktopCoral, set the options you want, and then exit the program manually.
Then if explorer crashes or whatever in the future it will keep the settings.

Under "Capture Options" tab, uncheck the "Retrieve and store URL string.." option:
