Well, I tried ACA capture PRO just now, it seems the thing is powered by dirty publicity (false claims, paid reviews and deceitful download buttons) rather than real functionality.  :)

Interesting that titan216 only has two posts here, both of them about ACA...  :-\

Looks interesting, sri - especially if it does quicktime input without any additional codec downloads :P

Acronis isn't too great for file-based backups... but it's great for imaging. Genie Backup seems to be the best I've found for files.

D-T is a great app, I use it for archiving as well. Really rocks when I need to machines on the museum where I work, I don't need to carry a case of CDs around but can just mount images from our server.

I'm still using 3.47, and I don't need the "piracy features" (ie: protection emulation). Any reason for me to upgrade to more recent version?

Also, you don't need D-T for VMware, since VMware can mount ISOs itself :)

Hmmm... either that's a fraud, or somebody is going to get his ass kicked for putting in such a backdoor...

Just make sure that you get a decent 17" TFT and a graphics card with two output (preferably both DVI).

I also thought about the two monitor system. Does it really make a difference?
Oh yes!

I'd much rather have two monitors than one big. Things like maximizing your IDE on one monitor, and having other stuff (instant messaging, programming reference, ...) on the second is invaluable. It's also pretty nice when gaming, I can have fullscreen game on main monitor, and IM on the other.

Paintshop Pro 7 (I don't like the newer versions and will only use that one)
Any reason you don't like 8? Haven't tried 9, but after corel bought PSP it *did* turn darn awful.

I think these are the most important...

xplorer^2 - because it's faster and smarter.
website watcher - keeps me up-to-date.
vmware - because it makes life safer.
VIM - because it's magical.
Notepad++ - because it's free and I'm not hardcore enough with VIM yet :P
subversion - because source control is necessary.
tortoiseSVN - because it's nifty.
SCons - because makefiles suck.
WinRAR - because it's one of the best compressors, with very good commandline support.
PuTTY - because it's the least-hassle SSH client I've used.[/url]
ToDoList - because I tend to forget things and suck at managing time.

General Software Discussion / Re: idea for donation coder CD
« Last post by f0dder on September 20, 2006, 03:35 AM »
Making another bootable CD with rescue tools is not needed, however one with all of the donationcoder.com software would be a great idea as we could make a nice autorun interface that allows users to install all of the apps from DC.COM (at the time) that they use in one foul swoop.

Agreed, agreed :)

Cute enough idea, but IMHO there's no reason to create "yet another bootable rescue CD"...

Living Room / Re: OpenDNS - safer, faster and smarter DNS
« Last post by f0dder on September 20, 2006, 12:21 AM »
OpenDNS: a stupider DNS service.

1) decent ISPs already do caching (in fact, who don't?)

2) your ISP DNS is probably faster:
OpenDNS:
Reply from 208.67.222.222: bytes=32 time=108ms TTL=53
Reply from 208.67.220.220: bytes=32 time=107ms TTL=53
versus CyberCity Denmark:
Reply from 212.242.40.3: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=58
Reply from 212.242.40.51: bytes=32 time=15ms TTL=58

3) "fixing" misspelled URLs is just retarded, breaks applications that rely on getting a DNS error on bad URL, and is just an advertising scheme anyway. Besides, who controls what is a typo? Filtering in such a basic service as DNS is BAD.

Also, do check out this query and this query.

It's funny how every ISP that have done similar stuff has been flamed to death over it, while a "free service" doing it are embraced by some people...

Funny I never made the connection with it looking like a Devil head. One thing about that I really disliked was that if you have the box on the floor the power button is just low enough that you can easily clip it with a chair wheel or your foot shutting the pc down. That said at least it wasn't the reset button you could accidently hit, that could really mess things up.
Consider my angst when my mum bought a dog.

Eóin: I used to have one of the same casings as you, the purple on on the right in your first pic, for housing my Athlon700. Ever thought the reset/powerbutton/led thing looks like a demon head? :) Oh, and I had the same speakers as the ones in your second pic.

It's interesting to see that some of you have very poor arm support! - ideally you should be able to rest your forearm on your table while typing, to avoid too much strain. I know it certainly matters to me, with all those hours I spend (or at least, used to spend) in front of the computer :-[

By the way it looks like the drive has four lithium batteries? That would imply that it can lose data, after umphteen years or so... I thought normally solid-state disks didn't require battery backup? On the other hand, perhaps this means that the drive has faster memory (non-volatile flash ram tends to be slow), and that it can be cheaper to manufacture.

Or perhaps those four round things aren't lithium batteries at all :)

I'd *love* to use something like that as my primary drive in my workstation... should give very high sustained read/write speeds, and *fantastic* seek time. Raptor? Go home  :-*

General Review Discussion / Re: Mini review: toDoList
« Last post by f0dder on September 18, 2006, 05:05 PM »
I've started using ToDoList for fSekrit... using it to keep track of bugs (don't feel like setting up a bug tracking system just yet), features I want to add, et cetera. Certainly does make developmen a bit more managble.

When I release a new version, I make a "phony" task in the ToDoList, and move all the completed features / fixed bugs to subtasks for that task, so I can keep track of when I did what.

Here's what it currently looks like:

fSekrit / Re: Beta: fSekrit 1.3 beta thread

allen: spare time and energy/motivation comes and goes, and what I need is the intersection of the two... fortunately I seem to be in a good period :)

You won't be locked out of your notes since you can copy text from a read-only and paste to another app. Removing the ability to copy would be a somewhat artifical limit, people with access could just manually copy the text (painstaking, but possible).

The idea of an EDIT and a READONLY password is decent enogh, but that's a very artificial limit as well. After all, I have plans on opensourcing fSekrit at some point in time, and then it'd be easy for people to bypass ReadOnly. You really should think mostly of it as a "convenience".
