Living Room / Stephen Wolfram's Long Demo of the Wolfram Language
« Last post by mouser on February 25, 2014, 08:34 PM »
I am not a big fan of Stephen Wolfram -- I think his "A New Kind of Science" was a mess.

Likewise, I experience some real cringing listening to him describe his new 30-years-in-the-making "language" as being great at doing everything.  In fact I think from everything we've seen so far, I'm not sure "language" is the best description for what this is.  I have a deep skepticism for projects that try to make it super easy to do big complicated things -- because often they make it exceedingly difficult to actually write code that does what you want.

He looks like he's basically thrown everything including the kitchen sink into this -- it looks like a massive amount of work, and a massive amount of work to maintain -- which makes me skeptical about it's survival.

BUT whatever it is, there are some very cool things going on here.. And it looks like a wonderous thing to play with.  Well worth a watch:

So far changing the one monitor from DisplayPort to DVI seems to have fixed the problem.. Stay tuned..

Screenshot Captor / Re: Black Screen

Welcome oxo.

The problem is a security program actively preventing Screenshot Captor for capturing the screen.
It's inexcusable that these security tools are doing this without warning the user what they are doing.

See here for more info on how to fix: https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=20962.0

You can right-click to get a menu with preferences as one item on it -- I think it's best to leave the left doubleclick configured to show the main (editor) window.

« Last post by mouser on February 24, 2014, 03:48 PM »
What tomos said.  As long as you save in PNG format (which SC uses by default) your images will be 100% perfect, exactly what you see on screen.
It's only when you save in a "lossy" format like jpg that files can degrade in quality from the original.

I should probably turn off that tray message by default, as it's not very useful.

If displayport proves to not be the culprit, i'll move to ultramon next -- but i've always used ultramon and it's never done such a thing before so i don't suspect it as highly as i suspect displayport.

its not icon placement that's the issue (i dont have any icons on my desktop); i also use a 3rd party remote access tool (Radmin) that doesnt do any resolution changing, so that's not it -- and i never had this trouble with the same arrangement on winxp.  however the graphics card and monitor have changed and the use of displayport is new.

i suspect it might be what someone else suggested, one of my monitors not waking up fast enough (or too fast), confusing the system.  maybe displayport is affecting this as well.  we shall soon know because i just swapped out the displayport connector for dvi.

now i remember why my brain shut down when trying to figure out what DVI cable to buy..

Screenshot Captor / Re: SC Cannot capture active dialog "Hotkeys and Shortcuts"
« Last post by mouser on February 22, 2014, 06:00 AM »
You figured out the trick.. Problem is that when the hotkeys dialog is showing, it disables all hotkeys.  So cmpm's trick is the way to go -- use the quick capture bar.

thanks for the clarification fishous.

Screenshot Captor / Re: How to auto-save just captured pciture?
« Last post by mouser on February 22, 2014, 04:19 AM »
At the very bottom of that "post-capture" dialog that is asking you what to do is a drop-down box where you can tell SC to stay minimized after capturing instead of showing you that dialog.  Choose that and all captures will be saved automatically without showing that dialog.  That's what mine is set to.

Thanks for all of the suggestions, folks.

To narrow down the causes, I have replaced the one displayport connection with a DVI, so now they are all on DVI (a note to myself about the importance of using DUAL-LINK DVI cable here.

I will report on whether this fixes the problem.

To answer some of the questions above:
My screensaver doesn't change resolution.
I am using UltraMon to manager multi-monitor taskbars.
No login screen on wake.

Living Room / For monitor resolution above 1920x1080, you need a DUAL LINK DVI cable
« Last post by mouser on February 22, 2014, 03:29 AM »
Just a tip for others like me who have managed to live under a rock for the last couple of years, that if you are using a monitor with resolution higher than 1920x1080, you need to make sure you have DUAL LINK DVI cables (not single-link DVI cables).

I mistakenly connected a higher resolution monitor with a SINGLE LINK DVI cable today and the image was all degraded, but there was no error or message telling me why.

Living Room / The Voynich Manuscript -- Serious Progress Decoding it
« Last post by mouser on February 21, 2014, 04:23 PM »
Just finished watching the 47 minute video presentation.  Wonderful, dry, humble, relentless, dedication to science.  What a pleasure it is to watch something like this (as compared to those things like Ted talks which make me want to set off a suicide bomb in the audience).  Fascinating!  I can't wait until they can decode it all.

The 600-year-old, strangely-illustrated Voynich Manuscript (which resides at Yale University) has been called the most mysterious manuscript in the world. Not a single word of the secret language has been decoded, at least not until now. Stephen Bax of the University of Bedfordshire says he has decoded ten words from the Voynich Manuscript.

The only time I have seen this type of behavior is if I've been connected to the machine remotely.

I do use a remote connection sometimes..

I think what i'll try is:
1. making sure no remote connection is open, and see if that makes a difference.
2. try changing the ont displayport connector to dvi and see if that makes a difference.

General Software Discussion / Windows moving around after monitors wake up
« Last post by mouser on February 20, 2014, 03:12 AM »
I am having a problem on my Win7 machine that I never had on my XP machine.

I have 4 monitors.   Overnight the monitors (not the computer) go to sleep.

When they wake up, some of the windows that were open on the desktop jump/move around to different monitors and resize.

It's really quite annoying.

Windows 7, Nvidia modern graphics cards with up to date drivers.

Any ideas how I might stop this from happening? Short of turning off the monitor sleep power options?
