Screenshot Captor / Re: Allow only one instance without warning popup?
« Last post by mouser on March 21, 2014, 03:32 PM »
Fair enough, let me try to fix the bug and maybe add an option to silently just restore the first instance.

I would just let it take a delay value, and exit itself after X seconds.

If you wanted to get fancy, let it take on the commandline the secondary application to execute, and then exit after that program has launched and opened a window (and then switch to that window on exit).

I don't know, i think his original idea still seems simpler and more useful in general: A utility you can invoke, which puts a black window on top covering the screen for a specified amount of time and then exits.
Ideally with a nice commandline customizable text message and/or a "please wait" animation.

I'm looking for a utility that will either blank the screen for x seconds or display a fake progress bar while blanking the screen until mce is fully loaded and running.

kind of a cute idea for a little app..

ESR (and most normal desktop-recording / screencasting tools) record audio through one of your audio recording devices.  That is, it normally will want to be recording your voice from a microphone.

The only way to record the audio playing through a browser is if you have a virtual audio recording device that is names something like "what you hear" or "stereo mix".  If you have such a device, you should select it as your audio input source in ESR and then it should work.

It's not the conspiracy nut stuff per se that gets things moved to the basement -- but when entire threads start to become filled with these posts that it gets exhausting.  If you have an opinion by all means post it, but then take a break and give the rest of the population a chance to express their thoughts (and digest what you've written).

Just watched Lunopolis -- didn't really do it for me -- too silly -- I couldn't suspend disbelief sufficiently (though it did hold my interest throughout).

But for those who enjoy the genre, I'd like to recommend: Primer and Safety Not Guaranteed and Time Crimes, all of which are truly excellent.

Developer's Corner / Re: Unreal Engine now $20/mo + 5% royalties
« Last post by mouser on March 20, 2014, 01:08 PM »
The low cost engine options available to indie developers currently is incredible -- when i was just learning to code this was unthinkable.

From my standpoint, the subscription cost thing is a non-issue -- $20/month means it's affordable to someone who doens't have much money and wants to use it to make a serious game.

What seems notable about this news is not the subscription model, but the 5% royalties.  My memory is the royalties they used to have were like 20-30% which I thought was unacceptable. But 5% seems manageable and would make Unreal Engine a viable candidate for an indie team looking for commercial success.

Thanks for the kind words, Nightfish!

The problem you are describing is one that has been raised before -- I wish I had a better answer for you other than it's a known problem, and it's on my todo list of things to fix.

General Software Discussion / Re: Raymond.cc compares 20 Drive Imaging Tools

I've been using Macrium free very happily for a couple of years now, but I'm a big fan of Easus partition management tools, so I may have to switch to Easus.

Though I will note that speed is of secondary concern to me -- reliability of restoration is at the top -- and that's something reviews have a hard time addressing.

General Software Discussion / Raymond.cc compares 20 Drive Imaging Tools
« Last post by mouser on March 17, 2014, 07:45 PM »
Nice comparison of Drive Imaging backup tools -- both free and commercial.  Focused mainly on speed differences.

Overall Summary:

AOMEI Backupper excelled in all tests bar one. When you consider its features compared to other free backup software, and the fact it’s free for personal and commercial use, Backupper is really worth looking at. Although it never won any of the main tests, we have to commend Acronis True Image for producing consistently strong results in all tests while showing no real weaknesses.

Both Macrium Reflect and ShadowProtect were also strong but each had a weakness in at least one area. EaseUs Todo Backup was good at backup speed but slow at restoration while AX64 was generally fast with its no frills ease of use philosophy. The higher compression and portability of Drive Snapshot makes it useful as a backup and restore from anywhere type of tool.

Obviously these tests are only one part of how well a particular backup software works, testing for other factors such as reliability and stability are simply not possible unless a program is tested in multiple scenarios over a period of weeks or months. But one thing you wouldn’t want from your backup software is for it to work inefficiently, because don’t forget, these results will be magnified the more data you are backing up or restoring.

The game Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is on sale on steam today for 75% off, making it less than $4.

It's a multiplayer team-based first person shooter.

I'm not sure we will ever play it, but there has been some talk in the #donationcoder chat channel (see link at top of forum) of playing it all together, so I just bought it.

If anyone else wants to join in playing, pick it up!

If you're on steam, want to play it, but for some reason can't buy it, and have made more than 5 posts on the forum, send me a message today and i'll try to buy you a copy.

Good stuff. Gives a nice history of cryptography up to the present.

« Last post by mouser on March 12, 2014, 08:19 AM »
Thanks AbuFi.
I think it must be that the code is somehow dependent on American-style date and time, even though the control for selecting the date and time is showing it localized to your region.
This is the same problem that must be affecting robbero above.

I'm going to have to test it on a virtual machine with non-american date settings in order to fix it.

Stay tuned I will try to make a new version over the weekend.

I'm guessing the problem is related to an issue with specifying a time in a format the program is not expecting.

Could you take a screenshot of how you set the time right before you hit accept, and post it here?

i tend to be like xtabber and avoid software that uses a licensing system that is per computer.  it's not just that i don't want to pay for each computer i have, it's that i don't want to deal with any software that is going to make me jump through some painful hoops if i try to move it from one computer to another, etc.
